Digital Image Access In An Educational Environment, Patricia Pitkin

Theses

The thesis Digital Image Access in an Educational Environment explores multiple approaches to image system design and deployment in the academic setting. This discourse chronicles the issues, options, design considerations, technical challenges, and organizational and social factors inherent in Internet and network access to, and use of, collections of high-resolution digital images in the university environment. Discussion focuses upon advances undertaken or participated in at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) by Wallace Library to provide digital image access to the RIT community. Efforts include the development of a local image system, the beta testing of a national image delivery system …

In the closing weeks of the 1996 election, Montana's airwaves were flooded with the following television advertisement:

Who is Bill Yellowtail? He preaches family values, but he took a swing at his wife. Yellowtail's explanation? He 'only slapped her,' but her nose was broken. He talks law and order, but is himself a convicted criminal. And though he talks about protecting children, Yellowtail failed to make his own child support payments, then voted against child support enforcement. Call Bill Yellowtail and tell him we don't approve of his wrongful behavior. Call (406) 443-3620.

The anti-Yellowtail ad, financed by an organization …

The Legal Infrastructure Of High Technology Industrial Districts: Silicon Valley, Route 128, And Covenants Not To Compete, Ronald J. Gilson Jan 1999

The Legal Infrastructure Of High Technology Industrial Districts: Silicon Valley, Route 128, And Covenants Not To Compete, Ronald J. Gilson

Faculty Scholarship

In recent years, scholars and policymakers have rediscovered the concept of industrial districts – spatial concentrations of firms in the same industry or related industries. In this Article, Professor Gilson examines te relationship between high-technology industrial districts and legal infrastructure by comparing the legal regimes of California's Silicon Valley and Massachusetts's Route 128. He contends that legal rides governing employee mobility influence the dynamics of high technology industrial districts by either encouraging rapid employee movement between employers and to startups, as in Silicon Valley, or discouraging such movement, as in Route 128. Because California does not enforce post-employment covenants not …

A Government For Our Time? Business Improvement Districts And Urban Governance, Richard Briffault Jan 1999

A Government For Our Time? Business Improvement Districts And Urban Governance, Richard Briffault

Faculty Scholarship

The emergence and rapid spread of business improvement districts ("BIDs") is one of the most important recent developments in American cities. BIDs have been controversial, with both supporters and proponents viewing the districts as part of a trend toward the privatization of the public sector. By examining the legal and political structures that determine BID formation, functions, finances and governance, this Article determines that BIDs are not private entities but are, instead, a distinctive hybrid of public and private elements. Moreover, although the particular fusion of public and private institutions, values and concerns embodied in the BID is unique, Professor …

Beyond The Independent Counsel: Evaluating The Options, Thomas W. Merrill Jan 1999

Beyond The Independent Counsel: Evaluating The Options, Thomas W. Merrill

Faculty Scholarship

The Independent Counsel Act expires on June 30, 1999. Should it be extended? Extended with modifications? Radically reformed? Or should it be allowed to sunset with nothing put in its place? To answer these questions, we need to address some more fundamental questions: (1) Do we truly need an independent office to investigate alleged wrongdoing by high-ranking officers of the executive branch? (2) If so, what are the options for the organizational structure of such an office? (3) By what criteria should the different institutional options be evaluated? (4) Under these criteria, which option represents the best, or perhaps more …

Grand Jury Secrecy: Plugging The Leaks In An Empty Bucket, Daniel Richman Jan 1999

Grand Jury Secrecy: Plugging The Leaks In An Empty Bucket, Daniel Richman

Faculty Scholarship

Although people can quarrel about the significance or reliability of Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr's investigative findings, no one can deny that his investigation produced new law. We now know that the attorney-client privilege survives the death of the client, that government lawyers may not rely on that privilege to shield communications from their "client" relating to criminal misconduct, and that there is no "protective function privilege" (at least not yet), While bringing some clarity to certain areas, the Independent Counsel's investigation also highlighted the confused state of the law relating to Rule 6(e)'s grand jury secrecy provisions.

Crew Resource Management: A Literature Review, Robert W. Kaps, Ran Keren-Zvi, Jose R. Ruiz Jan 1999

Crew Resource Management: A Literature Review, Robert W. Kaps, Ran Keren-Zvi, Jose R. Ruiz

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Crew Resource Management as an academic field of study has only been in existence for a relatively short period. However, because of its importance to the aviation community and the airlines in particular, there is a small but growing community of researcher and academicians that are specializing in its postulates. Despite the importance of research to the aviation industry and to aviation education, no comprehensive compendium of point specific literature exists. This void presents an obstacle for both researchers and practitioners in locating articles that may be relevant to their work. In addition, because of a narrow scope of many …

Recruiting On The Outside: Action-Oriented Research Solutions To External Student Recruitment In Collegiate Aviation Education, Brent D. Bowen, Larry Carstenson, Duane Boyle

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

The authors present a case on various methods of recruiting external students that can be applied to any academic program. An example case study is provided to compare the most efficient practices used by a particular university dealing with strategies of aviation collegiate recruitment. In this paper the authors use the action research method to explore the different types and strategies of collegiate recruitment and discuss the process which must be followed to make it successful. They establish that student recruitment must be an active and ongoing commitment of each aviation academic unit. Related literature is examined and reported to …

A Model Of “Applied Ethics” In Aviation Safety: The Aviation Safety Reporting System, Lamarr Stanford, Willem Homan Jan 1999

A Model Of “Applied Ethics” In Aviation Safety: The Aviation Safety Reporting System, Lamarr Stanford, Willem Homan

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Recently it was reported in the popular news media that 25 San Diego State University students were caught cheating on an ethics exam (Restine, 1999). Internet sites like will sell you a canned essay for $19.97 (Ware, 1999). The President, trying to escape responsibility for a tawdry affair, blatantly lies to the country on national television (Chen, 1998). As for aviation, imagine the following not-so-unrealistic scenarios involving airmen. The pilot of a Boeing 747 over the mid-Atlantic, with 400+ passengers on board, descends through an assigned altitude and narrowly misses another airliner flying below. The 747 crew, fearful of ramifications, …

Tech’Knowledge’Y Anxiety, Wm Francis Herlehy Iii, Merodie A. Hancock

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

There is a plethora of literature on educational software and hardware. Equally as much has been written about technology and the learning environment. Conspicuous in its absence is discussion of the liveware component of educational technology, the faculty member. Changing educational technologies are threatening many faculty members' sense of security and even, in some cases, their very livelihoods. Those faculty members who are willing to face their concerns 'head-on' can learn to convert their apprehension into the motivation needed to make changes that will assure them of success in today's high-technology, learning environment. Change in educational technology has always been, …

Interpersonal Skills In Aviation: Applications And Development, Melissa M. Monfries, Phillip J. Moore Jan 1999

Interpersonal Skills In Aviation: Applications And Development, Melissa M. Monfries, Phillip J. Moore

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the critical role that interpersonal skills play in the aviation environment. Many volumes have been written on the matter and it is not our intention here to review every research endeavour in interpersonal skills and aviation but rather to provide an overview of some of the more important research, drawing out the implications for aviation management. The paper is organized in the following manner: We first examine what interpersonal skills are and why they are important in aviation. This is followed by an examination of the literature on interpersonal skills in selection …

Privatization And Corporate Governance: The Lessons From Securities Market Failure, John C. Coffee Jr. Jan 1999

Privatization And Corporate Governance: The Lessons From Securities Market Failure, John C. Coffee Jr.

Faculty Scholarship

Should privatization be "fast" or "slow"? Should policymakers adopt a "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead" approach that accepts the inevitability of some overreaching by controlling shareholders, but justifies this cost as necessary to realize and expedite the efficiency gains incident to privatization? Or should privatization proceed more cautiously because of the risks of market failure and political corruption that may result when control seekers are tempted to bribe and seduce the judicial and regulatory systems to achieve the private benefit of control? These tempting private benefits arise, of course, precisely to the extent that privatization preceded the creation of …

Dimensions Of Roles, Responsibilities, Training Background And Needs, Policies, And Procedures For Paraeducators Dealing With Students With Special Needs, Beverly Anne Plagge

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem of this research study was to delineate and synthesize the roles, responsibilities, skill level, and training background and needs of paraeducators working with students with special needs from a state that requires paraeducator certification and a state that does not require paraeducator certification. The five core areas of roles and responsibilities were: (a) instructional support, (b) behavior management, (c) diagnostic support, (d) classroom organization, and (e) personal care assistance from the special education paraeducator and the special education teacher who teams with the paraeducator. Very few differences existed between what paraeducators and their teachers felt were appropriate and …

This study investigated the selenium (Se) requirements of three phytoplankton species which commonly bloom in southern Australian estuaries. The present study showed that the toxic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum Graham had an obligate requirement for Se (IV) in culture. After two transfers (~ 4 weeks ≈ 7 generations) in Se-deficient seawater medium, this phytoplankton species exhibited a decline in growth rate (25%) and biomass yield (90%), while complete cessation of cell division occurred under prolonged (8 weeks ≈ 12 generations) Se starvation. Addition of 10-9-10-7 M H2SeO3 to nutrient-enriched seawater medium resulted in increased G.catenatum …

Human Sensibility - Alienation, Hyuejin You

Theses

The purpose of the MFA thesis is to involve creating the 'Human sensibility- Alienation' as the sculptural pieces. I choose the human sensibility as the vehicle of my work because I believe it is where basic determination about motives, values and responsibility are formed. The body of work explored in this thesis is about physical, emotional and psychological issues in the context of the human characters and my viewpoint of art. It reflect on aspects of myself such as the struggle between independence and connection, love of nature and alienation from our environment, social constraint and personal growth. In this …

Existence Of And Responses To Violence In Georgia Elementary Schools, Marie Craig Hooks Jan 1999

Existence Of And Responses To Violence In Georgia Elementary Schools, Marie Craig Hooks

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Most elementary schools throughout the nation are safe environments in which young children are achieving and flourishing. However, as the literature confirms that elementary schools are experiencing an increase in incidents of school violence (Petersen, 1997, National Parent Teacher Association, 1993, Sauerwein, 1995), it is imperative that principals examine both proactive and reactive means of responding to these violence issues should they arise in their schools. Disciplinary consequences addressing violent acts which have been used historically in secondary and middle schools are not always available to elementary principals nor are they developmentally appropriate for young perpetrators of violent acts.

The …

Training Hospital-Employed Nurses To Use Automatic External Defibrillators: Evaluation Of Knowledge And Skills Immediately Post-Training And At Six Months, Susan Patrice Brown Jan 1999

Training Hospital-Employed Nurses To Use Automatic External Defibrillators: Evaluation Of Knowledge And Skills Immediately Post-Training And At Six Months, Susan Patrice Brown

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Numerous studies have demonstrated the importance of early defibrillation in patients suffering a cardiac arrest. The increased awareness of the importance of early defibrillation and the growing availability of Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) has prompted the American Heart Association (AHA) to recommend that AED training be incorporated into Basic Life Support (BLS) programs for all hospital personnel expected to respond to a patient in cardiac arrest.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the retention of knowledge and skills of hospital-employed nurses in their use of an AED after a training program. A secondary goal was to determine if …

No More Secrets?: Policy Implications Of Commercial Remote Sensing Satellites, Ann Florini, Yahya A. Dehqanzada Jan 1999

No More Secrets?: Policy Implications Of Commercial Remote Sensing Satellites, Ann Florini, Yahya A. Dehqanzada

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Ever since the earliest satellites and astronauts started taking pictures of the Earth from space nearly four decades ago, those images have inspired excitement, introspection, and, often, fear. Like all information, satellite imagery is in itself neutral. But satellite imagery is a particularly powerful sort of information, showing both comprehensive vistas and surprising detail. Its benefits can be immense—but so can its costs. The same images that remind us that we all share a fragile planet also enable those who have the images to more accurately aim their weapons at adversaries near and far.

The Construction And Experience Of Nature: Perspectives Of Urban Youths, Lily Kong, Belinda Yuen, Navjot S. Sodhi, Clive Briffett

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper, we explore the ways in which young people in a highly urbanised setting experience and develop constructions of nature. We do so by using Singapore as our case study, an Asian context in which urbanisation is total (Singapore's population is totally urbanised), Based on focus group discussions, we conclude that young Singaporeans have little interest in and affinity for nature. This stems from a few factors: growing up in a highly urban environment in which contact with nature is limited; over-protective parents of two-children families who worry about the 'dangers' their children are exposed to when playing …

Negotiating Cultural Boundaries: Confucianism And Trans/National Identity In Korea, William A. Callahan Jan 1999

Negotiating Cultural Boundaries: Confucianism And Trans/National Identity In Korea, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This essay looks to the complex intercultural relations of China and Korea to highlight two important issues in political theory and international relations: the transnational nature of world politics and the limits of analytical binaries such as East‐West and tradition‐modernity. Discussions of international politics in East Asia characteristically address issues of security and development studies. More recently, Confucianism has been mobilized as part of the clash of civilizations of Asia with the West. This essay will consider how cultural boundaries are negotiated within the region via an analysis of the workings of the transnational discourse of Confucianism in the construction …

Multiple Perspectives On Multimedia In The Large Lecture, Helen A. Moore, Timothy D. Pippert Jan 1999

Multiple Perspectives On Multimedia In The Large Lecture, Helen A. Moore, Timothy D. Pippert

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Students, graduate instructors and the classroom professor responded in journals, on objective tests, in focus groups and on survey questionnaires to the effects of computer media in four large lecture classes. Graduate instructors and students responded in focus groups to multimedia technology with consistent themes, including enhancement of cognitive strategies (note taking and organization of ideas) and motivation. However, students also expressed distancing from the instructor. Student achievement outcomes using pre- and post-test scores showed no differences across two experimental applications of multimedia presentations: static and dynamic. Discussion of findings emphasizes the need to balance considerations of resource scarcity and …

An Analysis Of Differences Among Males Choosing A Traditional As Opposed To Non -Traditional Career, Scott David Struck Jan 1999

An Analysis Of Differences Among Males Choosing A Traditional As Opposed To Non -Traditional Career, Scott David Struck

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The question of how men entering nontraditional careers (i.e. nursing), differ from men entering a more traditional career (i.e. technology) has not been adequately examined. Career decision-making self-efficacy, sex role identity, age, and the degree of influence on career choice of role models, perceived income, and the importance of career advancement, was examined among male nursing (n = 80) as opposed to male technology majors (n = 72). Career related self-efficacy was measured using the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy scale (CDMSE; Taylor & Betz, 1983), while the Bem Sex Role Inventory-Short Form (BSRI-SF; Bem, 1981) was used to measure sex role …
