Brain Sex: How The Media Report And Distort Brain Research, Janet M. Bing

English Faculty Publications

Testosterone gives men a particular advantage in that it is focusing and galvanizing a brain that is already, by its very structure, more focused than the female. Remember that the male brain is a tidier affair, each function in its special place . . . Biology, then, every bit as much as social conditioning, militates against a strongly feminine role in areas traditionally regarded as male preserves.

Unfulfilled Promises: Women's Rights In Egypt, Nemat Guenena, Nadia Wassef Jan 1999

Unfulfilled Promises: Women's Rights In Egypt, Nemat Guenena, Nadia Wassef

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Today, there is almost no field into which Egyptian women have not ventured, yet their status in society remains unequal to that of men. While many factors account for the prevailing gender gap, male-dominated institutions have continued to relegate women’s concerns to a low priority, impeding their progress. This monograph contends that recent public discourse in Egypt is dominated by the conservative polemics of the Islamists and that the state, in its attempt to contain the Islamists, has subordinated women’s issues to its own concerns for security and legitimacy. Renewed appeals urging women to retreat to the private sphere and …

Renewed Introspection And The Legal Profession, Eugene R. Gaetke

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

As the twentieth century draws to a close, the legal profession again immersed in a process of self-assessment, reflection, and reform. Operating on several fronts, various constituent elements of the bar have recently completed or have underway significant projects relating to the law of lawyering.

Two efforts stand out in particular. For more than a decade, the American Law Institute has labored in the production of a new Restatement of the Law Governing Lawyers, and the organization stands now on the brink of that monumental work's publication. Equally significant, the American Bar Association has again undertaken a comprehensive review of …

Graduate Program Assessment Of Student Satisfaction: A Method For Merging University And Department Outcomes, Jeremy H. Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article evaluates a communication graduate program based upon the perceptions of alumni satisfaction. The department's assessment plan was utilized to measure their perceived knowledge of theory and research, as well as feelings about career preparation. The results indicate that assessment measures related to content taught may be linked to perceptions about quality, flexibility and facilities in a graduate program. Educational outcomes will continue to be an important issue for communication educators. It is critical that assessment data be collected, interpreted and used to revise curriculum in order to be responsive to needs. By doing this, communication programs will be …

Numerical Modeling Of Thermal Refraction In Liquids In The Transient Regime, Dmitriy I. Kovsh, David J. Hagan, Eric W. Van Stryland Jan 1999

Numerical Modeling Of Thermal Refraction In Liquids In The Transient Regime, Dmitriy I. Kovsh, David J. Hagan, Eric W. Van Stryland

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

We present the results of modeling of nanosecond pulse propagation in optically absorbing liquid media. Acoustic and electromagnetic wave equations must be solved simultaneously to model refractive index changes due to thermal expansion and/or electrostriction, which are highly transient phenomena on a nanosecond time scale. Although we consider situations with cylindrical symmetry and where the paraxial approximation is valid, this is still a computation-intensive problem, as beam propagation through optically thick media must be modeled. We compare the full solution of the acoustic wave equation with the approximation of instantaneous expansion (steady-state solution) and hence determine the regimes of validity …

Visible Light Emission From Dyes Excited By Simultaneous Absorption Of Two Different Frequency Beams Of Light, Alexandra Rapaport, Karine Ayrault, Eyitope St. Matthew-Daniel, Michael Bass Jan 1999

Visible Light Emission From Dyes Excited By Simultaneous Absorption Of Two Different Frequency Beams Of Light, Alexandra Rapaport, Karine Ayrault, Eyitope St. Matthew-Daniel, Michael Bass

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Emission of visible light by dyes in both liquid and polymer hosts is reported when excited by simultaneous absorption of infrared light from two different wavelength sources. By moving the intersection point of these two beams about within the volume of the dye-doped medium, one can create a true, real-time, three-dimensional display.

Unique Properties Of Quadratic Solitons, G. I. Stegeman, R. Fuerst, R. Malendevich, R. Schiek, Y. Baek, I. Bauman, W. Sohler, G. Leo, G. Assanto, Ch. Bosshard, P. Günter

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Quadratic spatial solitons exist in media with second order nonlinearities near the phase-matching condition for frequency mixing processes involving two or three waves of different frequency. Discussed here are a number of properties of these special solitons which are different from those of other spatial solitons which rely on optically induced index changes for guiding. First, the self-guiding properties of quadratic solitons are shown to have completely different origins than solitons which rely on index changes. Second, it is shown that there exists a large variety of quadratic solitons which contain two or three distinct spectral components with relative amplitudes …

Isolation And Characterization Of A Caenorhabditis Elegans Src Loss-Of-Function Allele Using Reverse Genetics, Jennifer Dignan Hogan Jan 1999

Isolation And Characterization Of A Caenorhabditis Elegans Src Loss-Of-Function Allele Using Reverse Genetics, Jennifer Dignan Hogan

Doctoral Dissertations

The vertebrate proto-oncogene Src is a protein-tyrosine kinase that has been implicated as a component of receptor-mediated signal transduction pathways important for cell growth and differentiation. Consistent with this notion, overexpression or activation of Src by mutation induces neoplastic transformation in cell culture, leads to tumorigenesis in laboratory animals, and has been observed in a number of human tumors. Despite years of intensive investigation, neither its role in oncogenesis nor its normal, biological role is understood.

To diminish the issue of redundancy that has complicated analysis of Src function in vertebrates and Drosophila, I have chosen to study Src function …

At The Heart Of It: Middle School Writers Use Talk And Multimedia Journals To Forge A Literate Classroom Community, Julie A. Pantano Jan 1999

At The Heart Of It: Middle School Writers Use Talk And Multimedia Journals To Forge A Literate Classroom Community, Julie A. Pantano

Doctoral Dissertations

In this research study, I investigated how middle school writers use talk and multi-media journals to forge a literate classroom community. Talk and multi-media journals helped middle school writers to construct and maintain a safe, caring, supportive, and respectful learning environment where transformative literacy and learning experiences could take place.

Classroom talk played a vital role in improving students' relationships in this literate classroom community and engaging them in meaningful ways with their multi-media journals. During the research study, explicit instruction in the social aspects of talk emerged as important as explicit instruction in language arts content.

The multi-media approach …

The Role Of Cytokines In The Pathogenesis Of Experimental Legionella Pneumophila Infections, Corinna Mary Krinos Jan 1999

The Role Of Cytokines In The Pathogenesis Of Experimental Legionella Pneumophila Infections, Corinna Mary Krinos

Doctoral Dissertations

Legionnaires' disease is an acute lobar pneumonia caused, primarily by the facultative intracellular pathogen Legionella pneumophila. This organism when inhaled by humans descends into the lower respiratory tract and parasitizes alveolar macrophages. L. pneumophila adhered to U-937 cells, A549 cells and peritoneal macrophages from A/J mice in an opsonin-independent fashion. Following attachment, the organism penetrated the cell membrane, replicated within these cells eventually inducing lysis. To better define the adhesion of L. pneumophila to host cells, an E. coli clone (LP 116), expressing the 25 kDa major outer membrane protein (MOMP) of L. pneumophila was used in binding studies. This …

Preparation And Characterization Of Derivatized Microparticles Immobilized In Hydrogel Membranes For Optical Chemical Sensing Based On Polymer Swelling, Eric William Miele Jan 1999

Preparation And Characterization Of Derivatized Microparticles Immobilized In Hydrogel Membranes For Optical Chemical Sensing Based On Polymer Swelling, Eric William Miele

Doctoral Dissertations

Hydrogel membranes containing aminated microparticles have been investigated for reflectance based optical sensing. The membranes were evaluated by UV/Vis spectrophotometry, for potential use in a remote distributive fiber optic chemical sensor. This work describes efforts for improving the signal and decreasing the overall response time of the membranes. The microparticles were prepared by dispersion and seeded emulsion polymerization techniques. The microparticles were derivatized to introduce pH sensitivity. The hydrogel membranes containing swellable microparticles are turbid. Scattering occurs at the microparticle-hydrogel interface and is based on refractive index changes accompanying polymer swelling. The particles swell in response to hydrogen ion concentration, …
