A Community-Based Parenting Program With Low-Income Mothers Of Young Children, Bonnie Nicholson, Viktor Brenner, Robert A. Fox

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Research has established a significant relationship between certain parental characteristics. such as income or parenting practices, and the development of child behavior problems. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a parenting program for low-income parents of children one to five years old which was offered through community-based family resource centers. Seventy-one mothers completed the program and showed significant decreases in their use of verbal and corporal punishment and significant increases in nurturing behaviors: their children’s behavior also improved significantly. Forty-five percent of parents also met Jacobson and Truax’s (1991) criteria for clinically significant change. Implications for practitioners working With this …

What Is Critical Literacy?, Ira Shor Jan 1999

What Is Critical Literacy?, Ira Shor

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

We are what we say and do. The way we speak and are spoken to help shape us into the people we become. Through words and other actions, we build ourselves in a world that is building us. That world addresses us to produce the different identities we carry forward in life: men are addressed differently than are women, people of color differently than whites, elite students differently than those from working families. Yet, though language is fateful in teaching us what kind of people to become and what kind of society to make, discourse is not destiny. We can …

All three jurisdictions have adapted the American store-front legal clinic model to the needs and legal cultures of their society. J\.ustralia has a mixed model, in which over half of individual casework is dealt with by …

Awakening Genius In The Classroom By Thomas Armstrong, Jacqueline Collier Ph.D.

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

In a world of inclusion and acceptance, of diversity and uniqueness, and of looking at the individual strengths of each child in an educational setting, it is only fitting that we look to the "genius" of each learner. The use of the term "genius" in this context redefines the usual perspectives and asks us to stretch our understanding to include the potential capabilities of every learner and what it is that they bring with them to make a unique individual worth developing. In his book Awakening Genius in the Classroom, Thomas Armstrong coaxes each reader to examine his or her …

Putting Law And Politics In The Right Places — Reforming The Independent Counsel Statute, Christopher H. Schroeder Jan 1999

Putting Law And Politics In The Right Places — Reforming The Independent Counsel Statute, Christopher H. Schroeder

Law and Contemporary Problems

The fundamental flaw in the independent counsel statute consists of its attempt to convert a political decision, the decision whether to refer to a case of public corruption to an investigator outside normal prosecutorial offices, into a legal one. When the Independent Counsel Reauthorization Act of 1994 expires on Jun 30, 1999, it should not be reenacted unless this flaw is eliminated.

Infoharness: Managing Distributed, Heterogeneous Information, Kshitij Shah, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Today, important information is scattered in so many places, formats, and media, that getting the right information at the right time and place is an extremely difficult task. Developing a single software product, for example, includes the creation of documents ranging from the requirements specification and project schedules to marketing presentations, multimedia tutorials, and more. Each document may be created by a different person using a different tool, and each may be stored in a different place. InfoHarness is an information integration system, platform, and tool set that addresses these problems, managing huge amounts of heterogeneous information in a distributed …

Gay Rights For Gay Whites: Race, Sexual Identity, And Equal Protection Discourse, Darren L. Hutchinson Jan 1999

Gay Rights For Gay Whites: Race, Sexual Identity, And Equal Protection Discourse, Darren L. Hutchinson

Faculty Articles

My argument proceeds in four parts. Part I situates my discussion of the synergistic relationship among race, class, gender, and sexuality within a broader body of research on the "intersectionality'' of systems of oppression and of identity categories. Part I then examines how my scholarship attempts to advance this literature both substantively and conceptually. Part II expounds my claim that the comparative and essentialist treatment of race and sexuality within pro-gay and lesbian theory and politics marginalizes gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons of color and constructs and reinforces the notion that the gay and lesbian community is uniformly white …

The Creative As Enemy Of The True: The Meaning Of Originality In The Matthew Bender Cases, Deborah Tussey Jan 1999

The Creative As Enemy Of The True: The Meaning Of Originality In The Matthew Bender Cases, Deborah Tussey

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

The scope of copyright protection for case reports and case reporters has been the subject of litigation since the Supreme Court decided its first copyright case, Wheaton v. Peters,[1] in 1834. Prior to the development of electronic technologies, the courts established a fairly consistent set of guidelines on which print publishers could rely. However, the development of electronic research tools raised new questions which the old guidelines did not address. With the founding of Lexis's online research service, and the later development of CD-ROM research products, West Publishing Co., the premier publisher of case reports, found itself in possession of …

Click Here: Web Links, Trademarks And The First Amendment, Christopher E. Gatewood

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

The World Wide Web has experienced rapid growth during the 1990s, with millions of publishers adding diverse opinions, objectives and page content. The main programming feature that has kept this network of networks from becoming a twisted thicket of web-sites is the hyperlink. These links guide users across the Web by creating connections from page to page and site to site, allowing a reader to follow tangential paths to whatever it is the Web has to offer her. Links provide connections within a site and are also used constantly to travel from one publisher's site to another. Because the linking …

Who Leads At Halftime?: Three Conflicting Visions Of Internet Privacy Policy, Karl D. Belgum Jan 1999

Who Leads At Halftime?: Three Conflicting Visions Of Internet Privacy Policy, Karl D. Belgum

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Concern about privacy on the Internet runs high, but the prescriptions for treatment vary widely. Privacy advocates seek different goals when formulating policy proposals. Some seek to protect individuals and society from the effects of loss of privacy, including the loss of human dignity. Others seek to encourage the development of online markets in personal information, so that consumers can profit from their own information, rather than giving it away. Still, others seek primarily to promote the growth of e-commerce, and see privacy fears as a threat to that goal. These goals are fundamentally inconsistent, and that inconsistency is obscured …

Conceptual Foundations Of Privacy: Looking Backward Before Stepping Forward, Robert A. Reilly Jan 1999

Conceptual Foundations Of Privacy: Looking Backward Before Stepping Forward, Robert A. Reilly

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

In cyberspace, as in today's real world, there seems to be confusion in regard to what privacy is and what it is not. One scholar, Ruth Granson highlights recent efforts to fully comprehend privacy: "the concept of privacy is a central one in most discussions of modern Western life, yet only recently have there been serious efforts to analyze just what is meant by privacy." Over the years, the conception of the nature and extent of privacy has been severely bent out of shape. The definitions and concepts of privacy are as varied as those in the legal and academic …

Affordable Internet Access For All Americans, Mark J. Maier Jan 1999

Affordable Internet Access For All Americans, Mark J. Maier

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

There are times in our history where new technologies burst onto the scene and have a major impact on our lives. We live in one such time. The Internet is revolutionizing how people and organizations interact with each other. Examples of these paradigm changes include how students are now being educated online with minimal face time with their teachers; governments are being forced to adapt to the new circumstance where once formidable geographical boundaries between countries are being lowered by information technology; and the military is realizing that it needs to harness this new technology or be defeated by it.

A Unified Approach To Cyber-Libel: Defamation On The Internet, A Suggested Approach, Barry J. Waldman

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

The Internet is a global "super-network of over 15,000 computer networks used by millions of individuals, organizations, corporations and educational entities the world over."As the Internet has developed, it has become a medium not only for entertainment, but also an important source of information and news distribution. Because the Internet and the World Wide Web have developed into important resources for information and news, traditional media concerns and legal controversies have reached a level of growing importance. Since the last report on developments in Virginia's law of administrative procedure,' both her General Assembly and her courts have been busy making new law. This year's General Assembly revamped the Freedom of Information Act ("FOIA"), and made adjustments to laws regulating the periods in which agencies must decide certain types of licensing cases and promulgate certain procedural regulations. Meanwhile, the courts of the Commonwealth were active in the field, addressing open questions concerning the following subjects: rulemaking, due process, evidence, timeliness, and judicial review.

Adaptive User Models For The Design Of Intelligent User Interfaces, Lisa Martha Hunt

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research is to determine the effects over time of a dynamic system that adapts itself to a user's current state of expertise, in terms of the application domain, by constantly monitoring the user throughout use of the system, placing them in appropriate user models when this expertise has changed.

A dynamic system, named ER-by-Design version 2.0, is presented, consisting of an inference component, a help system, a help/assistance screen, and user models. The user models are responsible for adapting the system interface to the level of expertise of the user. The system monitors and analyzes a …
