Callus Production And Plant Regeneration From Anther Culture Of Some Turkish Barley Cultivars, Çi̇ğdem Savaşkan, Ivona Szarejko, M. Ci̇hat Toker
Turkish Journal of Botany
Anther culture of four different barley cultivars ( Hordeum vulgareL. cvs. Anadolu, Cumhuriyet-50, Obruk-86 and Tokak-157/37) currently cultivated in Turkey has been investigated. Two different culture media (BAC3 and FHG) were used and the effect of a 21-day cold pretreatment was studied. Androgenesis on BAC3 medium was evaluated statistically in all genotypes and the percentage of anther response and the frequency of calli production were found significantly different (P

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
This paper describes the mycological examination of patients admitted to the department of dermatology of Kahramanmaras State Hospital. One hundred and seventy samples of finger nails, hairs and skin were collected from patients suspected of having fungal diseases and were examined under a light microscope after being treated with 15-20% KOH solution. It was observed that 68 of the 170 samples contained fungal hyphae and arthrospores, while 62 samples were free of these. Forty samples were observed to have Malasezia furfur. The samples containing M. furfur were not subjected to a culture medium. Of the 130 cultured samples, 68 had …

Obtention Of In Vitro Haploid Plants From In Situ Induced Haploid Embryos In Cucumber(Cucumis Sativus L.), Gülat Çağlar, Kazim Abak
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
In this study the obtention of in vitro haploid plants from haploid embryos induced by pollination with irradiated pollen was investigated. The haploid embryos of four cucumber genotypes obtained in different season of the year were cultured on the E20A medium under aseptic condition in 1992-1994. The percentage of embryos that turned into plantlets, duration needed for plant formation, and in situ plantlet development were investigated. Also, the micropropagation possibility with clonning and propagation coefficient of plantlets were determined. The ability of embryos at advanced-stages to form plants was found to be higher (60 % in the first year and …

Propositions For Information Technology: Planning For Success, Ken Haycock, G. Jopson
Faculty Publications
In Canada, the West Vancouver School Board proposed 13 propositions about the selection, management, and effective use of information technology. For each proposition, the senior management included a full outline of the current status, a plan of action, the name of the staff member responsible, and a time line. An external assessment of implementation of each proposition and of the impact on achievement was undertaken. The propositions, clustered in the areas of vision, statement of beliefs, student learning goals, definition, social issues, learning issues, clarification of roles and responsibilities, integration of information delivery systems, community-based information infrastructure, and assessment, are …
The Judiciary And Public Choice, Frank B. Cross
The Judiciary And Public Choice, Frank B. Cross
UC Law Journal
Professor Cross challenges the conclusion of many Public Choice theorists that government's judicial branch is more amenable to making good public policy than the legislative or executive branches. These theorists' conclusion is based partly on the notion that lawmakers, perennially concerned about funding reelection campaigns, are more susceptible to narrow special interests than are life-tenured judges. Professor Cross points out, however, that this conclusion ignores aspects of the structure of the judiciary that lend it to manipulation by special interests at the expense of the public interest. Special interests can exercise control over public policy through the judiciary in a …

"Here Come De Judge": The Role Of Faith In Progressive Decision-Making, Derrick Bell
UC Law Journal
In this year's Tobriner Memorial Lecture, "Here Come de Judge: The Role of Faith in Progressive Decision-Making," Professor Bell examines the role of minority judges (and the criticisms lodged against them) in judicial efforts to eliminate discrimination and exploitation. Professor Bell argues that decisions that help correct past abuses, such as those upholding affirmative action, are temporary at best because society quickly renders them ineffectual and marginal. Professor Bell further argues that even the minorities who occupy positions of stature within the legal system, such as judges and scholars, are used against the larger minority population because they are held …

Are We Going To Cyberspace, Or Is This Just Another Trip To Abilene?, William K. Jackson
Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives
The costs of technology are high, and the options for its use are varied. In order to avoid arriving at a technological Abilene, we must continually ask and answer the question "what ought we do with technology?" and not "what can we do with technology?" Purpose must lead deployment. Otherwise, we risk expending great efforts and scarce resources to produce the educational equivalent of "Thank you for calling, press 1 if you. . ."

Resuspension Of Particles By Aerodynamic Deagglomeration, Mark Fonda, Mike Petach, C. Fred Rogers, Judith Huntington, David Stratton, Kenji Nishioka, Mark Tipo
United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications
A deagglomerator system was developed, characterized by laboratory tests, and flown under low-gravity (low-g) microgravity conditions. Requirements for a dry powder deagglomeration system were generated by university and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) scientists from diverse fields of interest including exobiology, planetary sciences, and atmospheric sciences. Existing deagglomeration methods and devices are reviewed. An aerosol generation method suitable for dry powders over a large rang of particle sizes and types at high concentrations with consistent deagglomeration efficiency are evaluated. Development of a pulsed-flow laboratory device and experimental approaches to meet the requirements without being g-dependent are described. Results of …
Honors Programs At Smaller Colleges, Samuel Schuman
Honors Programs At Smaller Colleges, Samuel Schuman
National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs
This little pamphlet first appeared in 1988 which, from the perspective of American higher education, is either just yesterday or eons ago. At the end of the '80s, in that First Edition, it was still possible to suggest that a fully-equipped Honors office space should have "a computer or typewriter," a suggestion which today sounds more appropriate for a museum of antique office machinery than an up-to-date operation. On the other hand, some of the same questions about access and elitism which troubled us over a decade ago continue to be contemporary concerns. This revision, like most, seeks to preserve …

Background Contaminants Evaluation Of Fort Niobrara And Valentine National Wildlife Refuge, Karen J. Nelson, Brent J. Esmoil
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The objectives of this study were to determine background concentrations of metals and organic compounds in biotic and abiotic components of the Fort NiobraralValentine National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) Complex and document these results to utilize as baseline information for future contaminants investigations. To establish this baseline, sediment, water, and biotic samples (fish, double crested cormorant eggs, and vegetation) were collected from Fort Niobrara and Valentine National Wildlife Refuge in 1995 and tested for inorganic and organic contaminants. lnorganics were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometer (lCP) scans. Arsenic and selenium were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). Mercury …

Monitoring Of Selenium Concentrations In Biota From The Kendrick Reclamation Project, Natrona County, Wyoming 1992 - 1996, Pedro Ramirez Jr., Kimberly Dickerson
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Selenium is bioaccumulating in fish and aquatic birds inhabiting the Kendrick Reclamation Project (Kendrick) in Natrona County, Wyoming as a result of mobilization associated with irrigation return flows. Field studies conducted in the 1980’s by the U.S. Geological Survey (Survey) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) as part of the Department of Interior’s National Irrigation Water Quality Program (NIWQP) revealed elevated selenium concentrations in water, sediment and biota at Kendrick and immediately downstream in the North Platte River. Selenium concentrations found in biota exceeded levels known to cause mortality and embryonic deformities in birds and impaired reproduction in …

Pork 101 A Short Course Focusing On The Importance Of Pork Quality And Consistency, Dennis E. Burson, Dana J. Hanson
Nebraska Swine Reports
As we move towards the next century, pork producers face many challenges. The Pork Quality Audit in 1994 identified consistency of the meat product, meat quality and food safety as major issues producers can’t afford to ignore.
To introduce participants to these important segments of the pork industry, a three-day, hands-on short course has been developed at the University of Nebraska, with the assistance of the American Meat Science Association, the National Pork Producers Council, Michigan State University and Texas A&M University.

CGU Theses & Dissertations
Deslanting the Lens examines the historical and sociological implications of how Asian men have been represented in popular American film. From the early days of “yellowface” to caricatures like Long Duck Dong, Asian men have been relegated to perpetual foreigner status in American cinema. This paper will explore why the portrayal of Asian men has been limited to very specific ideas about Asian and Asian Americans are in society. This analysis will also include how socio/political events have shaped and influence popular perceptions about Asians, that inform how Asian men continue to be depicted in film.
