The Architectonics Of Information: Ancient Topical Thought And Postmodern Information, Catherine L. Hobbs Jan 1999

The Architectonics Of Information: Ancient Topical Thought And Postmodern Information, Catherine L. Hobbs

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

This paper examines the usefulness of thought patterns from ancient rhetoric as they have been appropriated historically and as potentially applicable concepts for the present and future in today's interlinked electronic environment.

An earlier version of this paper, first delivered as part of a panel at the Rhetoric Society of America meeting at Tucson in May 1 996, was delivered and published as "The Architectonics of Information: Ancient Topical Thought and Postmodern Cognition" in Proceedings of the Mid-America Symposium on E merging Computer Technologies, October 1 996. Friends Of The Court? The Ethics Of Amicus Brief Writing In First Amendment Litigation, Allison Lucas

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Article explores the ethics of writing amicus briefs as they relate to defamation and privacy issues by focusing on two specific cases, Rice v. Paladin and Khawar v. Globe, International. It begins with a history of amicus curaie briefs, followed by a discussion of the two cases. In Paladin, a family sued a publishing company arguing that a book it published aided and abetted a murder. In Khawar, a photo was wrongly placed in a book and was subsequently printed in a newspaper. In both cases, amicus briefs were submitted on the part of the defendants from large media …

The Limited Public Offer In German And U.S. Securities Law: A Comparative Analysis Of Prospectus Act Section 2(2) And Rule 505 Of Regulation D, David B. Guenther Jan 1999

The Limited Public Offer In German And U.S. Securities Law: A Comparative Analysis Of Prospectus Act Section 2(2) And Rule 505 Of Regulation D, David B. Guenther

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Note examines the "limited circle of persons" exception in section 2(2) of the Prospectus Act in comparison to similar provisions of U.S. federal securities law, particularly Section 3(b) of the Securities Act of 1933 (the "Securities Act") and Rule 505 of Regulation D ("Rule 505"). Comparison of the Prospectus Act to U.S. securities law seems both warranted and useful. Certain aspects of German securities law are broadly modeled on U.S. precedents. U.S. securities laws reflect more than sixty-five years of experience defining (and re-defining) public and limited public offers and private placements. U.S. securities regulators have also displayed in …

Five Modern Notions In Search Of An Author: The Ideology Of The Intimate Society In Constitutional Speech Law, Marie Failinger Jan 1999

Five Modern Notions In Search Of An Author: The Ideology Of The Intimate Society In Constitutional Speech Law, Marie Failinger

Faculty Scholarship

In this article, drawing heavily on the work of sociologist Richard Sennett, the author argues that the Court’s jurisprudence lends credence to, and exacerbates, five damaging “common sense” notions about American public social life: that public space and time are naked or empty, and can be imagined as no more than transportation tunnels or even the binoculars of a voyeur, as illustrated by the public forum doctrine; that massed acts of public communication, or “speech crowds” are dangerous and must be controlled by force, as the public forum and “clear and present danger” doctrines suggest; that “shadow” space for deviant …

Information Literacy: An Issue Of Equity For New Majority Students, Lana Webb Jackman

Educational Studies Dissertations

Educating over 49% of those who attend higher education, public colleges and universities must assume a more dynamic leadership role during this societal transformation if New Majority students are to develop the intellectual skills required to compete effectively in today's marketplace. The Effect Of Antibiotic And Resistance Education On Patient Knowledge, Karen Niemchick Jan 1999

The Effect Of Antibiotic And Resistance Education On Patient Knowledge, Karen Niemchick

Masters Theses

Our society, which has enjoyed the benefits of antibiotics for over fifty years, is now experiencing an increase in bacterial resistance. One contributing factor is a lack of patient understanding about antibiotics resulting in their inappropriate usage. This study examined the effect of patient education in antibiotics and bacterial resistance on patient knowledge.

Adults from various medical facilities (a student health services clinic, an urgent care office, a family practice, and a community convenience sample) were given a ten-question survey designed to assess their knowledge of antibiotics and resistance. Half of the participants were randomly given an educational brochure to …

Health Care Provider Knowledge Of The Immunization Schedule And The Contraindications To Vaccinate, Lisa Huffstutter, Diane Kassuba, Kelly Beschoner Jan 1999

Health Care Provider Knowledge Of The Immunization Schedule And The Contraindications To Vaccinate, Lisa Huffstutter, Diane Kassuba, Kelly Beschoner

Masters Theses

The purpose to this study was to determine if the current knowledge of Kent county's health care providers contributed to the under immunization of children less than two years of age.

A survey, modified from a previous study done in Los Angeles, was distributed to Family Practice and Pediatrics offices within the greater Grand Rapids area. Several areas of health care provider knowledge were assessed. These included: (1) knowledge of the primary series immunization schedule in both a child on time and delinquent, (2) knowledge of timing between diptheria, tetanus, and pertussis boosters, and (3) knowledge of the contraindications to …

College of Education Multicultural & Diversity Newsletter

Each morning I wound my way up the steep hill along the deeply rutted dirt path, exchanging daily "maaa's" with five bleating sheep and shouting out, "¡Hola!" in response to the children who gleefully identified me as "¡Gringa!" Women and children, colorful bowls of cooked maize balanced atop their heads, sauntered to and from Maria Elena's where their maize would be ground; at home the dough would be shaped and flattened into tortillas, the mainstay of every meal in the small Guatemalan village of San Juan.
