Communication Models, Translation, And Fidelity, Paul A. Soukup Jan 1999

Communication Models, Translation, And Fidelity, Paul A. Soukup

Communication

The fact that people regularly translate from one language to another or-as the American Bible Society (ABS) New Media Translations Project has done-from one medium to another, may seem to make it easier to evaluate those translations. At some point, people can, and do, claim that one translation "works" while another does not, that one translation has greater aesthetic qualities than another, or that one translation is more faithful than another. The fact that people make such judgments, though, does not necessarily make it easier to explain theoretically how they make them.

Among other things, communication study examines both the …

The State Of The Parties (Third Edition), John C. Green, Daniel M. Shea

The State of the Parties Third Edition

The third edition of this best-selling collection includes over a dozen new essays and several revised chapters from earlier editions. Current coverage of national, state, and local parties includes chapters on hot topics like technology, money, and campaigns. Major party activities are presented in the context of presidential elections, legislatures, and in the courts. Minor parties - especially the Reform Party - are covered here more comprehensively than anywhere else. Thorough, original, and challenging “anchor” pieces by leading scholars serve to ground the book in the key scholarship on parties even as they launch into new explorations of party evolution. …

Lessons From The Akayesu Judgment, José E. Alvarez Jan 1999

Lessons From The Akayesu Judgment, José E. Alvarez

Faculty Articles

The judgment issued on September 2, 1998 by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda finding Jean-Paul Akayesu guilty on various charges of genocide and crimes against humanity is likely to please those who have long struggled for the progressive development and effective enforcement of international criminal law. This judgment, directed at the bourgmestre of the Taba commune in the Prefecture of Gitarama in Rwanda, is the first international conviction of an individual for genocide. Its symbolic significance is not likely to be lost on international lawyers.

Africa And Her Charter On Human And Peoples' Rights -Notyet "Ominira", Thomas Adeoye Olugbemiga Fawole Jan 1999

Africa And Her Charter On Human And Peoples' Rights -Notyet "Ominira", Thomas Adeoye Olugbemiga Fawole

LLM Theses and Essays

It is in the light of the foregoing that we intend in this thesis to examine the state of human rights in Africa. It would be the province of the thesis to find out how far the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights has enhanced the independence of the various African countries and improved on the quality of the rights enjoyed by the citizenry. While Chapter 2 deals with human rights in precolonial Africa, human rights in "modern day" Africa, i.e. from the colonial era, are dealt with in Chapter 5. Treating human rights under colonial rule and human …

Commercial Arbitration In The U.S.: The Arbitrability Of Disputes Arising From Statute-Based Claims, Sylvie Frankignoul Jan 1999

Commercial Arbitration In The U.S.: The Arbitrability Of Disputes Arising From Statute-Based Claims, Sylvie Frankignoul

LLM Theses and Essays

A leading contemporary expert in arbitration has explained: "The concept of arbitrability determines the point at which the experience of contractual freedom ends and the public mission of adjudication begins. In effect, it establishes a dividing line between the transactional pursuit of private rights and courts' role as custodians and interpreters of the public interest." 1 A major part of the arbitrability doctrine deals with the kind of claims that can fall within the scope of agreements for private dispute resolution. Arbitration clauses are an integral part of the parties' transactions. Nevertheless, the American judiciary historically has refused to enforce …

Is The Trips Agreement An Adequate Means To Deal With Unauthorized Copying Of Sound Recordings From The Internet?, Hege Sehested Zakariassen

LLM Theses and Essays

The Internet has expanded vastly in recent years, both in use and utility. It has become one of the most important means of distributors of information in our time. This increasing popularity has also led to "online fraud, theft, piracy, and infringement. The music industry is one of the branches that will experience upheaval in the next few years. The Internet might even change the way music is distributed. Experts believe that the Internet could alter the way music is distributed and undermine the physical distribution of sound recordings. Yet, on the other hand, the Internet could help unknown bands …

Notions Of Equity In (International) Environmental Law: Inter-Generational Equity, Youk-Hyun Sung Jan 1999

Notions Of Equity In (International) Environmental Law: Inter-Generational Equity, Youk-Hyun Sung

LLM Theses and Essays

Equity has a long history. In the first chapter of this thesis, notions of equity in conventional international law will be discussed. It must be more helpful to understand equity based upon the history of the term since the issues relating to equity were raised in quite a few cases in the past. In the second chapter, by discussing environmental equity in the United States, the only remaining superpower and the largest economy in the world, the thesis tries to see the future of equity in international environmental law. Environmental equity issues in the United States are good sources for …

Arbitral Situs: Considerations And Consequences, Rajdeep Singh Jan 1999

Arbitral Situs: Considerations And Consequences, Rajdeep Singh

LLM Theses and Essays

It is the law of the forum that is applicable to matters like arbitrability of the dispute, the validity of the arbitration agreement, the jurisdiction of the arbitrators, their appointment, removal and replacement and the challenge to their authority. Apart from these matters the law of the arbitral situs also governs the conflict of laws rules applicable to the dispute. Though the principle of party autonomy allows the parties to agree to a procedural law other than that of the arbitral situs, they still have to comply with the mandatory provisions of the law of the venue. In case they …

Identification And Characterization Of Genes Required For Hyphal Morphogenesis In The Filamentous Fungus Aspergillus Nidulans, Steven D. Harris, Amy F. Hofmann, Hugo W. Tedford, Maurice P. Lee Jan 1999

Identification And Characterization Of Genes Required For Hyphal Morphogenesis In The Filamentous Fungus Aspergillus Nidulans, Steven D. Harris, Amy F. Hofmann, Hugo W. Tedford, Maurice P. Lee

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

In the filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans, germination of an asexual conidiospore results in the formation of a hyphal cell. A key feature of spore germination is the switch from isotropic spore expansion to polarized apical growth. Here, temperature-sensitive mutations are used to characterize the roles of five genes (sepA, hypA, podB–podD) in the establishment and maintenance of hyphal polarity. Evidence that suggests that the hypA, podB, and sepA genes are required for multiple aspects of hyphal morphogenesis is presented. Notably, podB and sepA are needed for organization of the cytoskeleton at sites of …

Colletotrichum Trifolii Mutants Disrupted In The Catalytic Subunit Of Camp-Dependent Protein Kinase Are Nonpathogenic, Zhonghui Yang, Martin B. Dickman Jan 1999

Colletotrichum Trifolii Mutants Disrupted In The Catalytic Subunit Of Camp-Dependent Protein Kinase Are Nonpathogenic, Zhonghui Yang, Martin B. Dickman

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Colletotrichum trifolii is the fungal pathogen of alfalfa that causes anthracnose disease. For successful plant infection, this fungus must undergo a series of morphological transitions following conidial attachment, including germination and subsequent differentiation, resulting in appressorium formation. Our previous studies with pharmacological effectors of signaling pathways have suggested the involvement of cyclic AMP (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase (PKA) during these processes. To more precisely evaluate the role of PKA in C. trifolii morphogenesis, the gene encoding the catalytic (C) subunit of PKA (Ct-PKAC) was isolated, sequenced, and inactivated by gene replacement. Southern blot analysis with C. trifolii genomic DNA …
