Service-Learning Is A Feminist Issue: Transforming Communication Pedagogy, Eleanor M. Novek
Service-Learning Is A Feminist Issue: Transforming Communication Pedagogy, Eleanor M. Novek
Service Learning, General
How do we "do" emancipatory feminist teaching when we have not observed it or experienced it ourselves? The author argues here that service-learning is a useful strategy for feminist communication educators to begin challenging the power relationships of traditional pedagogy. Pioneered in the 1960s and '70s, this pairing of traditional course work with community service is now used as a learning model in schools around the nation. Because service-learning allows educators to forge relational links between ourselves, our students, our neighbors, and the communities in which we live, it deserves careful consideration from feminist educators.

Senate Trials And Factional Disputes: Impeachment As A Madisonian Device, Jonathan Turley
Senate Trials And Factional Disputes: Impeachment As A Madisonian Device, Jonathan Turley
Duke Law Journal
In this Article, Professor Turley addresses the use of impeachment, specifically the Senate trial, as a method of resolving factional disputes about an impeached official's legitimacy to remain in office. While the Madisonian democracy was designed to regulate factional pressures, academics and legislators often discuss impeachments as relatively static events focused solely on removal. Alternatively, impeachment is sometimes viewed as an extreme countermajoritarian measure used to "reverse" or "nullify" the popular election of a President. This Article advances a more dynamic view of the Senate trial as a Madisonian device to resolve factional disputes. This Article first discusses the history …
Attorney-Client Relationships In Cyberspace: The Peril And The Promise, Catherine J. Lanctot
Attorney-Client Relationships In Cyberspace: The Peril And The Promise, Catherine J. Lanctot
Duke Law Journal
Despite the legal profession's historical resistance to technological advances, the burgeoning world of cyberspace is bringing change to the practice of law. As laypeople flock to the Internet to seek help with their legal problems, lawyers are going online to provide such assistance. Yet, these exchanges are occurring without close consideration of whether they create attorney-client relationships-the source of weighty ethical and legal obligations. In many cases, lawyers seek to avoid the consequences of such relationships merely by disclaiming their existence. In this Article, Professor Lanctot examines the issue of lawyer-layperson communications in cyberspace from doctrinal and historical perspectives. The …
Church, State And Nation In Ukraine, Serhii Plokhy
Church, State And Nation In Ukraine, Serhii Plokhy
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Much of the current discussion concerning the future of independent Ukraine has centered on the issue of nation-building. Two models of the Ukrainian state, (1) national (the state of the ‘Ukrainian people’) and (2) multi-ethnic (the state of ‘the people of Ukraine’), usually serve as starting points for scholarly discussions.2 It is quite obvious that the future of church-state relations in Ukraine will depend heavily on the choices made by the newly independent state in its nationbuilding strategy. It is equally true that the religious policy of the government and the response to it on the part of organized religion …

Standards Of Care And Standard Form Contracts: Distinguishing Patient Rights And Consumer Rights In Managed Care, Wendy K. Mariner
Standards Of Care And Standard Form Contracts: Distinguishing Patient Rights And Consumer Rights In Managed Care, Wendy K. Mariner
Faculty Scholarship
There is hardly a legislature in the country that is not currently debating the issue of patient rights in managed care. Not surprisingly, legislators, as well as reporters covering the debate, have called upon George J. Annas, Edward R. Utley Professor of Health Law and Chair of the Health Law Department at Boston University, for information and advice. Professor Annas has earned the title of "father of patient rights" for his decades of research, writing, and advocacy on behalf of individuals who need health care and deserve justice.
Today, however, one might ask whether patient rights are compatible with managed …

Transferring Poultry Information To The Public Using The Internet: Aviannet @ Purdue University, Mickey A. Latour, Ryan A. Meunier
Transferring Poultry Information To The Public Using The Internet: Aviannet @ Purdue University, Mickey A. Latour, Ryan A. Meunier
Journal of Extension
This article describes the impact of AvianNet, a web site designed to aid the dissemination of information from the university to county educators and poultry producers. Educators most frequently use the site (33%), compared to poultry producers (19%). The number of phone calls regarding poultry needs to the authors' offices has decreased by ten-fold compared to a similar period before the inception of this project. It is believed that this decrease is a direct result of the extensive poultry database. County educators who would have previously called the authors' offices can now search under the web site's "publication" section. Direct …
Storytelling Festival, Nina Chen
Storytelling Festival, Nina Chen
Journal of Extension
University Outreach and Extension took the lead to initiate a Storytelling Festival in the southwest region of Missouri. About 500 people including children, teenagers, parents, child care providers, teachers, and senior citizens attended the festival and festival outreach. The festival included workshops, storytelling time, a family concert, and displays. Local storytellers shared their stories at 12 nursing homes and senior citizens centers. The event was an overwhelming success because of community collaboration and involvement. An evaluation showed 78% of respondents said the festival provided them with broader views about diverse cultures and increased their understanding about history, heritage, and literature.
Dot Posters: A Practical Alternative To Written Questionnaires And Oral Interviews, Larry Lev, Garry Stephenson
Dot Posters: A Practical Alternative To Written Questionnaires And Oral Interviews, Larry Lev, Garry Stephenson
Journal of Extension
Dot posters provide a quick, inexpensive, and reliable method for collecting information in public settings such as farmers' markets. Instead of filling out questionnaires or being interviewed, respondents are asked to answer close-ended questions on large flip charts by using stick-on "dots". Consumer response to the approach was overwhelmingly positive as 90% agreed to participate and 94% preferred this data collection method to written questionnaires. Overall, the dot posters add to rather than detract from the atmosphere in the markets. Dot posters represent an accessible and useful tool that should be considered for many research situations.

Protecting Privacy On The Front Page: Why Restrictions On Commercial Use Of Law Enforcement Records Violate The First Amendment, Jason L. Cagle
Vanderbilt Law Review
An individual is involved in an automobile accident and is arrested for driving under the influence. A few days after being re- leased, he receives several letters in the mail. One is from a chiropractor offering services to treat his injuries. Another is from an alcohol abuse treatment center. Yet another is from an attorney who defends traffic offenses. Each of the solicitors obtained the individual's name and address from publicly available records concerning the incident. The letters are truthful and not misleading, but utilize publicly available information for purely commercial purposes at the expense of the individual's privacy.

Bonus Questions--Executive Compensation In The Era Of Pay For Performance, Charles M. Yablon
Bonus Questions--Executive Compensation In The Era Of Pay For Performance, Charles M. Yablon
Articles
The article critically examines the evolution of executive compensation, particularly the shift from traditional pay structures to performance-based systems, and argues that this shift has not resolved the underlying issues of excessive pay and misaligned incentives. Instead, it has introduced new conflicts of interest and inefficiencies. The author proposes a regulatory solution—a deductibility cap on executive pay—to curb excessive compensation and better align executive incentives with shareholder interests.
The Risks Of Adjudicating Vichy, Richard H. Weisberg
The Risks Of Adjudicating Vichy, Richard H. Weisberg
Articles
The article examines the risks and implications of adjudicating Vichy-era officials, focusing on Maurice Papon's trial for crimes against humanity. It highlights how the trial exposed France's complicity in the Holocaust, the role of its legal system in perpetuating anti-Semitic policies, and the challenges of addressing historical injustices decades later.

1999 Louisiana Governor’S Primary Election Survey, Susan E. Howell
1999 Louisiana Governor’S Primary Election Survey, Susan E. Howell
Survey Research Center Publications
In a low interest, low salience governor's race, the incumbent Governor Foster has an overwhelming advantage over his main opponent, William Jefferson. In an election with such a popular incumbent, most of the undecided vote can be categorized as against that incumbent because one can assume that a "don't know" response really represents reservations about the incumbent. If we assume that Foster receives only 20% of the Undecideds and those who refused to say, he still comfortably crosses the 50% mark needed to win in the primary. If we assume a ten percent difference between white turnout and black turnout …
