Service Learning And Assessment: A Field Guide For Teachers, Susan Bonthron, Rick Gordon
Evaluation/Reflection
Recent advances in understanding the human brain, intelligence, and how we learn1 indicate that successful schools need to provide
• rich, safe learning environments that address multiple realms of intelligence;
• opportunities for experiential learning to promote construction of knowledge and understanding;
• opportunities to develop both intelligence and skills through mediated learning;
• opportunities to transfer learning through reflection; and
• balanced assessment measures that include portfolios and performance assessments as well as more conventional standardized tests.

Static light scattering and electric field-induced Kerr measurements were performed above the nematic-isotropic phase transition of a terminal-lateral-lateral-terminal negative Poisson ratio trimer. For both measurements the inverse susceptibility was observed to be nearly linear with temperature, a result inconsistent with our previously reported Kerr data [Phys. Rev. E 58, 2041 (1998)].

Impact Of Heterogeneity On Dsm Performance, Renato J. O.. Figueiredo, José A. B. Fortes
Impact Of Heterogeneity On Dsm Performance, Renato J. O.. Figueiredo, José A. B. Fortes
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
This paper explores area/parallelism tradeoffs in the design of distributed shared-memory (DSM) multiprocessors built out of large single-chip computing nodes. In this context, area-efficiency arguments motivate a heterogeneous organization consisting of few nodes with large caches designed for single-thread parallelism, and a larger number of nodes with smaller caches designed jror multi-thread parallelism. This paper quantitatively studies the performance of such organization for a set of homogent: ous multiprocessor programs from the SPLASH-2 benchmark suite. These programs are mapped onto the heterogeneous processors without source code modifications via static thread a.ssignment policies. A constant-area simulation analysis shows that a 4-node …
Queueing Analysis With Gaussian Inputs Including Srd, Lrd, And Self-Similar Processes, Jinwoo Choe, Ness B. Shroff
Queueing Analysis With Gaussian Inputs Including Srd, Lrd, And Self-Similar Processes, Jinwoo Choe, Ness B. Shroff
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this paper we study the supremum distribution of a general class of Gaussian processes {Xt : t 2 0) having stationary increments. This distribution is directly related to the steady state queue length distribution of a queueing system, and hence its study is also important for various applications including communication network analysis. Our study is based on Extreme Value Theory and we show that logP({supt,, - Xt > x)) + m,/2 asymptotically grows at most (on the order of) logx, where m, corresponds to the reciprocal of' the maximum (normalized) variance of Xt. This result is considerably stronger than the …

A Generic Object-Oriented Random Variate Model For Discrete Event Simulations Separating The Data Model From The Process Model, Palathingal Frank
A Generic Object-Oriented Random Variate Model For Discrete Event Simulations Separating The Data Model From The Process Model, Palathingal Frank
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Data is the lifeline of any simulation model. The validity of the data is a primary determining factor on the accuracy of a simulation. Hence the data model is an important part of any simulation model. But this is, in most occasions, the most neglected part of any model. Most people view the model correctness in te1ms of the process model functionality rather than the data that is being used in the simulation. As simulation gets more accepted as a reliable problem-solving tool, it is increasingly important to pay careful attention to the accuracy of the simulation and that can …
The Constitutionality Of Mandatory Public School Community Service Programs, Rodney A. Smolla
The Constitutionality Of Mandatory Public School Community Service Programs, Rodney A. Smolla
Law and Contemporary Problems
Constitutional challenges to community service programs may be divided into two generic types--those raised by students or parents who object to the requirement of community service, and those raised by students, parents, organizations, or agencies who object to the selection criteria used to include or exclude organizations or agencies eligible to participate in community service programs.

The two-photon ionization of the metal atoms V, Cr, Y, La, and Ir sputtered by an Ar-ion gun from solid targets has been investigated using linearly polarized laser pulses of 500- fs duration and 248.6-nm (KrF) wavelength in combination with mass spectroscopy that is free of volume effects. A near-resonant ionization process has to be attributed to all five atoms. By fitting analytical solutions of a rate equation model describing the temporal evolution of the ionization process, we can determine absolute values of the one-photon cross sections and saturation intensities.
Measurement Of B0-B̅0 Flavor Oscillations Using Jet-Charge And Lepton Flavor Tagging In Pp̅ Collisions At √S =1.8 Tev, F. Abe, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration
Measurement Of B0-B̅0 Flavor Oscillations Using Jet-Charge And Lepton Flavor Tagging In Pp̅ Collisions At √S =1.8 Tev, F. Abe, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
We present a measurement of the mass difference Δmd for the B0 meson and the statistical power of the b flavor tagging methods used. The measurement uses 90 pb-1 of data from pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV collected with the CDF detector. An inclusive lepton trigger is used to collect a large sample of B hadron semileptonic decays. The mass difference Δmd is determined from the proper time dependence of the fraction of B hadrons that undergo flavor oscillations. The flavor at decay is inferred from the charge of the lepton from semileptonic …
Pierre Coste And Catherine Labouré: The Conflict Of Historical Criticism And Popular Devotion, Stafford Poole C.M.
Pierre Coste And Catherine Labouré: The Conflict Of Historical Criticism And Popular Devotion, Stafford Poole C.M.
Vincentian Studies
Pierre Coste’s analysis of Catherine Labouré and her visions serves as a case study in “the tension that can exist between the demands of a dispassionate historical criticism and those of popular devotion.” He did not believe in the visions and tried to prevent Catherine’s beatification. Publication of his research would not have been permitted, so he held one view publicly and another privately. Stafford Poole’s study uses two versions of Coste’s treatise, giving the publications and testimonies of the visions in chronological order and following each with Coste’s criticism. Among other things, he was troubled by the fact that …

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications
A combined experimental and theoretical study of argon valence photoionization illustrates the discovery of the broad lack of validity of the independent-particle approximation (IPA) for x-ray photoemission. In addition to previously known breakdowns of the IPA, which are limited to high photon energies and regions very near threshold, the observed breakdown in photoionization at intermediate energies demonstrates generally that the IPA is valid only in very restricted domains. These restrictions are expected to be relevant throughout the periodic table, with consequences for a wide variety of applications.

Evolutionary Patterns Of Morphometrics, Allozymes And Mitochondrial Dna In Thrashers (Genus Toxostoma), Robert M. Zink, Donna L. Dittmann, John Klicka, Rachelle C. Blackwell-Rago
Ornithology Program (HRC)
We examined patterns of variation in skeletal morphometrics (29 characters), allozymes (34 loci), mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction sites (n = 74) and fragments (n = 395), and mtDNA sequences (1,739 bp from cytochrome b, ND2, ND6, and the control region) among all species of Toxostoma. The phenetic pattern of variation in skeletal morphometrics generally matched traditional taxonomic groupings (based on plumage patterns) with the exceptions of T. redivivum, which because of its large size clusters outside of its proper evolutionary group (lecontei), and T. occelatum, which did not cluster with T. curvirostre. Skull characters contributed highly to species discrimination, suggesting …
Application Of A Fiber-Reinforced Continuum Theory To Multiple Deformations Of The Annulus Fibrosus, Stephen M. Klisch, Jeffrey C. Lotz
Application Of A Fiber-Reinforced Continuum Theory To Multiple Deformations Of The Annulus Fibrosus, Stephen M. Klisch, Jeffrey C. Lotz
Mechanical Engineering
Accurate tissue stress predictions for the annulus fibrosus are essential for understanding the factors that cause or contribute to disc degeneration and mechanical failure. Current computational models used to predict in vivo disc stresses utilize material laws for annular tissue that are not rigorously validated against experimental data. Consequently, predictions of disc stress resulting from physical activities may be inaccurate and therefore unreliable as a basis for defining mechanical–biologic injury criteria. To address this need we present a model for the annulus as an isotropic ground substance reinforced with two families of collagen fibers, and an approach for determining the …
Better Settle Than Sorry: The Regret Aversion Theory Of Litigation Behavior, Chris Guthrie
Better Settle Than Sorry: The Regret Aversion Theory Of Litigation Behavior, Chris Guthrie
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Legal scholars have developed two dominant theories of litigation behavior: the Economic Theory of Suit and Settlement,which is based on expected utility theory, and the Framing Theory of Litigation, which is based on prospect theory. While Professor Guthrie acknowledges the explanatory power of these theories, he argues that they are flawed because they portray litigants solely as calculating creatures. These theories disregard any role emotion might play in litigation decision making. Guthrie proposes a mplementary theory-the Regret Aversion Theory of Litigation Behavior-that views litigants as both calculating and emotional creatures. With roots in economics, cognitive psychology, and social psychology, the …

Kinematic Analysis Of Obstacle Clearance During Locomotion, Gary P. Austin, Gladys E. Garrett, Richard W. Bohannon
Kinematic Analysis Of Obstacle Clearance During Locomotion, Gary P. Austin, Gladys E. Garrett, Richard W. Bohannon
All PTHMS Faculty Publications
This study investigated the effect of obstacles of different heights on the locomotion of 15 healthy subjects. The following parameters were studied: (1) the distance of the toe and heel markers from the obstacle during toe-off and heel contact, respectively, (2) the minimum clearance distance of the toe and heel markers, and (3) the angular displacements and velocities of the hip, knee, and ankle. Results show significant differences in joint angular kinematics and clearance distances as obstacle height increased. The kinematic and distance differences exhibited both strong linear and non-linear trends. Toe-off distance and heel contact distance did not change …
