Candidate Sets For Complex Interval Arithmetic, Juergen Wolff Von Gundenberg, Vladik Kreinovich Oct 1999

Candidate Sets For Complex Interval Arithmetic, Juergen Wolff Von Gundenberg, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Uncertainty of measuring complex-valued physical quantities can be described by complex sets. These sets can have complicated shapes, so we would like to find a good approximating family of sets. Which approximating family is the best? We reduce the corresponding optimization problem to a geometric one: namely, we prove that, under some reasonable conditions, an optimal family must be shift-, rotation- and scale-invariant. We then use this geometric reduction to conclude that the best approximating low-dimensional families consist of sets with linear or circular boundaries. This result is consistent with the fact that such sets have indeed been successful in …

Are Journalists Qualified To Write About Health And Science?, Burnis R. Morris

SOJMC Faculty Research

This article examines the preparation of journalists to report on health and science issues. It traces the historical linkage between the news media and health and science and reports the results of a survey of college professors who teach reporting courses at 86 departments and schools of journalism and mass communication. The article, also intended to help explain the journalistic method to scientists, concludes that many young journalists are qualified to cover simple stories about health and science and other topics when they leave college and acquire the skills to report on more complex issues through on-the-job training and specialized …

Simultaneous Photometry And Spectroscopy Of The Newly Discovered Γ Doradus Variable Hr 8330=Hd 207223, Anthony B. Kaye, Gregory W. Henry, Francis C. Fekel, Douglas S. Hall Oct 1999

Simultaneous Photometry And Spectroscopy Of The Newly Discovered Γ Doradus Variable Hr 8330=Hd 207223, Anthony B. Kaye, Gregory W. Henry, Francis C. Fekel, Douglas S. Hall

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We present BV photometry and simultaneous high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectroscopy of the newly-discovered γ Doradus variable HR 8330 taken during the 1997 and 1998 observing seasons. We calculate power spectra for the B- and V-band data sets and for the time series defined throughout the observing season at each point across the Fe iiλ4508.289 and the Ti iiλ4501.278 line profiles to search for periodic variability. Period analysis reveals a single, 2.6-d period in both the photometric and the spectroscopic data, with a 237° phase lag between them. Based on the location of HR 8330 in the HR diagram and …

Interval Methods In Non-Destructive Testing Of Material Structures, Keith Worden, Roberto A. Osegueda, Carlos M. Ferregut, Soheil Nazarian, Debra L. George, Mary J. George, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva, Sergio Cabrera

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, e.g., in aerospace applications and in mammography, it is important to test the structural integrity of material structures. We show that interval methods can help.

Earth In Four Dimensions: Development Of The Ideas Of Geologic Time And History, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Oct 1999

Earth In Four Dimensions: Development Of The Ideas Of Geologic Time And History, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Changes in ideas and in technology can come about as slow incremental modifications, as well as by major paradigm shifts. In the case of the development of the ideas of geologic history and time, I will try to present these changes broadly and then look at how some of these have affected interpretation of Nebraska geology. Changes of view on three fronts were important in the development of geologic history and time concepts. First is the question of the nature of time. Is time cyclic or is it linear? The Greco-Oriental cultures had a world view based on cosmic cycles, …

The First Comparative International Accounting History Research Consortium met in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on May 20-22, 1999. Tom Lee, President, and Kathy Rice, Administrative Coordinator, of The Academy of Accounting Historians organnized the Research Consortium program and schedule and hosted the program at the University of Alabama. A reception and dinnner on the evening of May 20 opened the consortium. Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition Experiment Using The Advanced Communications Technology Satellite, Florida Solar Energy Center, Carol Emrich

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Satellite Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) was tested using the Advanced Communication Technology Satellite (ACTS) Ka-band signal and Ultra Small Aperture Terminal (USAT) ground stations. The SCADA system included a photovoltaic (PV)/diesel hybrid power generator designed to provide electricity to a rural community in a developing country. End-to-end baseline hardware checkout experiments have been completed. Results show that continuous two-second data transfers for real time monitoring can be completed with an error rate of less than 1%. The system recovers from simulated perturbations quickly and gracefully. Specifically, normal operation is resumed within 36 seconds following loss of power to …

The Measurement Of Socioeconomic Status And Social Class In The Lsay Project Technical Paper No. 14, Gary N. Marks Oct 1999

The Measurement Of Socioeconomic Status And Social Class In The Lsay Project Technical Paper No. 14, Gary N. Marks

LSAY Technical Reports

There is little doubt that soocioeconomic background is an important concept among social researchers and policy developers. First and foremost, the relationships between socioeconomic status with educational and labour market outcomes is an important indicator of the degree of social equity and the success of policies aimed at reducing social inequality. Although there is almost universal agreement on the importance of socioeconomic status there is little agreement on its conceptualisation and measurement. There are a variety of issues relating to socioeconomic status which have produced considerable debate. These include the explicit or implicit theoretical approach, whether continuous or categorical measures …

Anatomy Of A 1930'S Master Of Science In Business Administration Program, John S. Ribezzo

Accounting Historians Notebook

This article deals with the curriculum of universities of the day. However, what was a post-graduate course leading to the degree unique about the Bryant-Stratton program of Master of Science in Business was that the student could earn his/her Administration offered by Bryant-Stratton degree in one year. A quotation from the College, Providence, Rhode Island in the catalogue emphasized this point, "Because early 1930's. My interest in researching this it insures (the degree) the student a head topic is twofold. Firstly, Bryant-Stratton start of several years in climbing the rungs of College was the forerunner of Bryant College the ladder …

Predicting Flock Vigilance From Simple Passerine Interactions: Modelling With Cellular Automata, David B. Bahr, Marc Bekoff Oct 1999

Predicting Flock Vigilance From Simple Passerine Interactions: Modelling With Cellular Automata, David B. Bahr, Marc Bekoff

Ethology Collection

Vigilance in flocks can be described and modelled as a plausible set of local interactions between neighbouring birds. Each bird in the modelled flock chooses to feed or to scan based solely on whether or not its neighbours are feeding or scanning. This simple model has the ability both to reproduce observations that have not been previously explained and to predict flock behaviours that might be confirmed with future field studies. Examples include simulations showing decreased vigilance with increased flock size (as observed in the field), greater time spent scanning when obstacles such as trees are present (as observed) and …
