Photodecolorization And Photodegradation Of Crystal Violet Adsorbed On Metal Oxide Surfaces, Reygan Mashay Freeney

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The photodecolorization and the photodegradation of the triphenylmethane dye crystal violet (basic violet 3) adsorbed on four metal oxide catalysts was studied. Crystal violet dissolved in methanol was adsorbed onto the surfaces of an anatase and rutile titanium dioxide mixture, rutile titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and magnesium oxide, and the solvent was allowed to evaporate. The samples were irradiated using a 1000 W mercury-xenon arc lamp with glass optics as a light source. A wide spectrum and narrow regions of the spectrum were studied to determine their impact on the decolorization and degradation of crystal violet. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy was …

Join Index Hierarchy: An Indexing Structure For Efficient Navigation In Object-Oriented Databases, Jiawei Han, Zhaohui Xie, Yongjian Fu Jan 1999

Join Index Hierarchy: An Indexing Structure For Efficient Navigation In Object-Oriented Databases, Jiawei Han, Zhaohui Xie, Yongjian Fu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel indexing structure - join index hierarchy - is proposed to handle the 'gotos on disk' problem in object-oriented query processing. The method constructs a hierarchy of join indices and transforms a sequence of pointer chasing operations into a simple search in an appropriate join index file, and thus accelerates navigation in object-oriented databases. The method extends the join index structure studied in relational and spatial databases, supports both forward and backward navigations among objects and classes, and localizes update propagations in the hierarchy. Our performance study shows that partial join index hierarchy outperforms several other indexing mechanisms in …

Adaptive Information Filtering: Improvement Of The Matching Technique And Derivation Of The Evolutionary Algorithm, Daniel R. Tauritz, Ida G. Sprinkhuizen-Kuyper

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Adaptive Information Filtering is concerned with filtering information streams in changing environments. The changes may occur both on the transmission side (the nature of the streams can change) and on the reception side (the interests of a user can change). The research described in this report details the progress made in a prototype Adaptive Information Filtering system based on weighted trigram analysis and evolutionary computation. The main improvements of the algorithms employed by the system concern the computation of the distance between weighted trigram vectors and a further analysis of the two-pool evolutionary algorithm. We tested our new prototype system …

A Robust Artificial Neural Network Controller For A Turbogenerator When Line Configuration Changes, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the design of a robust controller for a turbogenerator. The robust controller is an artificial neural network (ANN) that is trained offline on a family of ANN models of the turbogenerator. This ANN controller augments/replaces the traditional automatic voltage controller (AVR) and the turbine governor of the generator. Simulation results are presented to show that the ANN controller is robust when the transmission line configuration changes.

Performance Characteristics Of A Cascaded Two-Level Converter, Keith Corzine, C. A. Whitcomb, S. D. Sudhoff

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A cascaded two-level power converter is proposed which utilizes two six-transistor inverters and is capable of producing voltages which are identical to those of three-level and four-level converters. Since the machine voltages are the same, the converter performance is the same as is verified through laboratory tests. The advantages and disadvantages of the proposed cascaded converter are explored. The proposed converter is simpler to construct and offers more nonredundant switching states per number of active semiconductors than standard multi-level converters

Web-Based Interlibrary Loan System, Ee Peng Lim, Schubert Foo, Cheng Hai Tan, Kwang-Yong Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Interlibrary loan (ILL) system is one of the important library services provided by most public libraries. Through ILL, public libraries share their collections of reading material and library users are able to access library resources beyond their affiliated libraries. However, the present manual ILL process is inconvenient, inefficient and error-prone. In this project, we developed a system that automated many tedious procedures in the existing ILL system. The new ILL system is realized by a number of Java applets customized for librarians and library users. The new ILL system allows library users to submit ILL requests at any time using …

Sahaja Yoga: An Ancient Path To Modern Mental Health?, Adam Morgan

School of Psychology Theses

The present study looks to evaluate the effectiveness of the meditative practice of Sahaja Yoga as a treatment for the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Whilst there is a small research literature that has investigated the efficacy of meditation (usually based upon the Buddhist Vipassana tradition) for the treatment of such symptoms, and a smaller literature looking at the effectiveness of Sahaja Yoga in the treatment of a number of physical health problems, no published studies have looked at the effectiveness of Sahaja Yoga as a treatment for mental health problems. The present study therefore compared three independent groups, these …

A Model-Based Approach For Compression Of Fingerprint Images, Fikret Erçal, M. Gokmen, Ilker Ersoy Jan 1999

A Model-Based Approach For Compression Of Fingerprint Images, Fikret Erçal, M. Gokmen, Ilker Ersoy

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose a new fingerprint image compression scheme based on the hybrid model of an image. Our scheme uses the essential steps of a typical automated fingerprint identification system (AFIS) such as enhancement, binarization and thinning to encode fingerprint images. The decoding process is based on reconstructing a hybrid surface by using the gray values on ridges and valleys. In this compression scheme, the ridge skeleton is coded efficiently by using differential chain codes. The valley skeleton is derived from the ridge skeleton and the gray values along the ridge and valley skeletons are encoded using the discrete cosine transform. …

Optimized Calibration For Unsteady Flow Modeling Using A Genetic Algorithm, Daniel Sanchez, Jerome A. Westphal Jan 1999

Optimized Calibration For Unsteady Flow Modeling Using A Genetic Algorithm, Daniel Sanchez, Jerome A. Westphal

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The calibration of an unsteady flow model generally relies on the estimation of roughness coefficients, which act as descriptors of friction resistance along the channel. Here an optimized procedure is implemented by incorporating a genetic algorithm (GA) to automate the process. This approach is suitable because discrete parameters are considered. The target is a one-dimensional unsteady flow model in which the roughness coefficient is allowed to vary not only along the river axis, but also dynamically with discharge. The objective function is the root mean square of the difference between measured and computed water levels at a given cross section. …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Strategies to efficiently train a neural network for an aerospace problem with a large multidimensional input space are developed and demonstrated. The neural network provides classification for over 100,000,000 data points. A query-based strategy is used that initiates training using a small input set, and then augments the set in multiple stages to include important data around the network decision boundary. Neural network inversion and oracle query are used to generate the additional data, jitter is added to the query data to improve the results, and an extended Kalman filter algorithm is used for training. A causality index is discussed …

Thermal Characterization Of Pmma Thin Films On Silica Using Modulated Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Crystal E. Porter, Frank D. Blum Jan 1999

Thermal Characterization Of Pmma Thin Films On Silica Using Modulated Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Crystal E. Porter, Frank D. Blum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The number of studies of thin polymer films has increased over recent years as technological processes incorporate the use of nanomaterials. An enhanced understanding of these films would enable us to predict bound-polymer behavior and thus improve the efficiency of processes and the quality of products. This is especially true as the thickness of the films approach molecular dimensions. The glass transition temperature of a polymer is one of the most important properties for characterization because it indicates how the polymer might perform macroscopically. when a polymer is confined, such as one the surface of a substrate, its behavior is …

Dynamics Of Acrylic Coupling Agents At Interfaces Of Composites, Hyoryoon Jo, Frank D. Blum Jan 1999

Dynamics Of Acrylic Coupling Agents At Interfaces Of Composites, Hyoryoon Jo, Frank D. Blum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Most applications of polymers involve composites, wherein a polymer is used in conjunction with another material, typically a solid fiber or filler. A coupling agent can enhance the adhesion between a polymer matrix and an inorganic filler. Organofunctional silanes, RSiX are often used as coupling agents. The methoxy or ethoxy group, X, can typically be hydrolyzed with water and an acid or a base catalyst in a protic solvent. The silanol groups of a hydrolyzed coupling agent can condense with other silanol groups from a glass surface, while the alkyl group, R, blends physically or bonds chemically to the polymer …

Avoparcin, A New Macrocyclic Antibiotic Chiral Run Buffer Additive For Capillary Electrophoresis, K. Helen Ekborg-Ott, Gina A. Zientara, Jeffrey M. Schneiderheinze, Kyung Gahm, Daniel W. Armstrong

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Avoparcin, like vancomycin, teicoplanin, and ristocetin A, belongs to the family of macrocyclic glycopeptide antibiotics. These antibiotics have all been used as effective chiral selectors for capillary electrophoresis (CE), thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The present work focuses on avoparcin, which has been shown to be an excellent chiral selector for the CE enantioseparation of many N-blocked amino acids, as well as several anti-inflammatory drugs of pharmaceutical importance. The use of avoparcin as a chiral run buffer additive in CE is discussed, as well as the effects of changing experimental parameters, like avoparcin concentration, pH, organic modifiers, …

Separation Of Enantiomers By Capillary Electrophoresis Using Pentosan Polysulfate, Xiande Wang, Jauh Tzuoh Lee, Daniel W. Armstrong Jan 1999

Separation Of Enantiomers By Capillary Electrophoresis Using Pentosan Polysulfate, Xiande Wang, Jauh Tzuoh Lee, Daniel W. Armstrong

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Pentosan polysulfate, a semisynthetic polysaccharide, was employed as a chiral un buffer additive in capillary electrophoresis. Twenty-eight racemic analytes were resolved. The separations were successful only at low pH when the analytes were significantly protonated. This suggests that ionic interactions were the dominant associative interactions between the anionic pentosan polysulfate and the positively charged analytes. Compared to other linear, carbohydrate-based chiral selectors (i.e., chondroitin sulfates, heparin and dextran sulfate) pentosan polysulfate has some characteristics common of anionic polysaccharides; yet it has several differences in its structure and properties which account for its unusual enantioselectivity. The effects of pH, concentration of …

An Empirical Comparison Using Both The Term Structure Of Interest Rates And Alternative Models In Pricing Options On 90-Day Bab Futures, Irene Chau

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The use of the term structure of interest rates to price options is relatively new in the literature. It describes the relationship between interest rates and the maturities of bonds. The first model that described the interest rate process was the Vasicek (1977) model. There have been many studies on the formulation of theoretical pricing models. Yet limited empirical research has been done in the area of actually testing the models. In this thesis we report the results of a set of tests of the models indicated below. This paper involves analysis of the pricing errors of the Black model …
