Computational Modeling Of Airborne Noise Demonstrated Via Benchmarks, Supersonic Jet, And Railway Barrier, Moumen Idres Jan 1999

Computational Modeling Of Airborne Noise Demonstrated Via Benchmarks, Supersonic Jet, And Railway Barrier, Moumen Idres

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In the last several years, there has been a growing demand for mobility to cope with the increasing population. All kinds of transportation have responded to this demand by expanding their networks and introducing new ideas. Rail transportation introduced the idea of high-speed trains and air transportation introduced the idea of high-speed civil transport (HSCT). In this expanding world, the noise legislation is felt to inhibit these plans. Accurate computational methods for noise prediction are in great demand.

In the current research, two computational methods are developed to predict noise propagation in air. The first method is based on the …

Multidisciplinary Sensitivity Analysis And Design Optimization Of Flexible Wings Using The Euler Equations On Unstructured Grids, Arunkumar Satyanarayana Jan 1999

Multidisciplinary Sensitivity Analysis And Design Optimization Of Flexible Wings Using The Euler Equations On Unstructured Grids, Arunkumar Satyanarayana

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Aeroelasticity is a classical discipline. However, even with recent advancement in computational technology, it still remains a challenging discipline. This is particularly true when aeroelasticity problems are solved in a loosely coupled manner. The advantage of a loosely coupled scheme is that the legacy codes of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural mechanics (CSM) can be preserved and used as independent modules in solving the desired aeroelasticity problems. In such a scheme, maintaining proper data transfer (load transfer and deformation tracking between CFD and CSM codes) is crucial in ensuring successful coupled solutions. This can be a challenging task …

Efficient Dynamic Unstructured Methods And Applications For Transonic Flows And Hypersonic Stage Separation, Xiaobing Luo Jan 1999

Efficient Dynamic Unstructured Methods And Applications For Transonic Flows And Hypersonic Stage Separation, Xiaobing Luo

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Relative-moving boundary problems have a wide variety of applications. They appear in staging during a launch process, store separation from a military aircraft, rotor-stator interaction in turbomachinery, and dynamic aeroelasticity.

The dynamic unstructured technology (DUT) is potentially a strong approach to simulate unsteady flows around relative-moving bodies, by solving time-dependent governing equations. The dual-time stepping scheme is implemented to improve its efficiency while not compromising the accuracy of solutions. The validation of the implicit scheme is performed on a pitching NACA0012 airfoil and a rectangular wing with low reduced frequencies in transonic flows. All the matured accelerating techniques, including the …

Needle Localization For Breast Biopsy: The Patient's Experience, Marian De Walt Morgan Jan 1999

Needle Localization For Breast Biopsy: The Patient's Experience, Marian De Walt Morgan

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The needle localization procedure for breast biopsy (NLP) can be painful and distressing for some women. This study was carried out to learn what factors might increase or decrease NLP pain and distress, and to gain insight into possible interventions to make the procedure more comfortable for all patients. One hundred and thirty-eight women were surveyed following breast needle localization at two central Virginia hospitals. The influence of eight variables (lidocaine, self-regulation, anxiety, worry about breast cancer, breast tenderness, finding mammography painful, difficulty with surgery, and distress of blood drawing) on four outcome variables (pain incidence, pain intensity, pain unpleasantness, …

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The St. Elias region of North America occupies portions of British Columbia, Alaska, and the Yukon Territory and comprises a network of public lands and protected areas managed by a variety of agencies. This thesis characterizes and analyzes the broad- scale, or regional, ecology of these lands and provides an assessment of the implications this has for ecosystem-based management—particularly as it relates to intergovernmental cooperation. A multi-stage, map-based, multidisciplinary process is used to synthesize information on the region’s physical, biological, and institutional environments. The fields of conservation biology and landscape ecology provide theoretical foundations for analysis. The ecological synthesis and …

Assessment Of Capacity For Water Resource Management: A Case Study Of A Small Watershed In Nepal, Bhanu Raja Neupane Jan 1999

Assessment Of Capacity For Water Resource Management: A Case Study Of A Small Watershed In Nepal, Bhanu Raja Neupane

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Use of local knowledge, increased public participation, and capacity building – singly or in combination – are identified as major strategies to enhance sustainable and integrated management of water. Recently, capacity assessment has been recognized as one of the most effective means to operationalize these strategies in the context of water resource management However, the contemporary literature shows local-level capacity assessment as one of the least explored areas. The literature shows that capacity assessment still lacks conceptual clarity and an implementable framework. Efforts are being made in this direction, but very few focus below the national level. Many such efforts …

Displacement-Based Analysis And Design Of Rigid Retaining Walls During Earthquakes, Yingwei Wu Jan 1999

Displacement-Based Analysis And Design Of Rigid Retaining Walls During Earthquakes, Yingwei Wu

Doctoral Dissertations

"This research focused on the analysis and design of rigid retaining walls subjected to earthquakes and considered nonlinear foundation soil properties. The simultaneous sliding and rocking movements of retaining walls were considered. Seven field conditions, including moist, submerged, perched and saturated backfill with a sloping drain, were specified by design codes. A computer program capable of computing displacement using real time history records or equivalent sinusoidal motions was developed. Finally, a dynamic design procedure was proposed for practicing engineers.

The study revealed that maximum shear modulus in foundation soil, maximum ground acceleration, and soil nonlinearity had significant effect on the …

Machine Tool Accuracy Characterization, Error Modeling And Compensation Using Telescopic Ballbar And Laser Interferometer, Yalcin M. Ertekin Jan 1999

Machine Tool Accuracy Characterization, Error Modeling And Compensation Using Telescopic Ballbar And Laser Interferometer, Yalcin M. Ertekin

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation presents the results of the research investigation on the machine tool accuracy characterization, error modeling and error compensation using telescopic ballbar and laser interferometer. Increasing demand for both higher machine tool accuracy and machining tolerances has resulted in a great need to measure and characterize the accuracy of NC machine tools and minimize machine tool induced errors on machined components before manufacturing parts, instead of inferring it from parts already machined. Using a telescopic magnetic ballbar, the results of the accuracy assessment of an old Bridgeport Series I CNC 2 1/2 axes vertical machining center are presented in …

Stability Of Paleosinks And Karstic Carbonates In The Southern Fire Clay Mining District Of Missouri, Robert Weiser Dillon Jan 1999

Stability Of Paleosinks And Karstic Carbonates In The Southern Fire Clay Mining District Of Missouri, Robert Weiser Dillon

Doctoral Dissertations

"The Southern Fire Clay District of Missouri was intensely mined during the late-1800’s to mid-1900’s for its valuable resource of high refractory clays deposited within Pennsylvanian sinkholes “paleosinks”. Mining operations have produced modifications in the Ozark aquifer, which in effect has possibly increased the instability of this paleokarst terrain and the potential of further environmental impacts to the land. Evidence supporting this hypothesis are: (1) A southerly shift in the regional groundwater divide relative to the topographic divide. This possibly is caused by the distribution of leaking clay pits, which suggests that the bedrock permeability or hydraulic conductivity has been …

The Development And Validation Of A Methodology For The Analysis Of Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons In Air Particulates (Indoor And Outdoor), Kathryn O'Malley

Masters

PAH form a large class of ubiquitous pollutants mainly of anthropogenic origin. Several PAH found in air particulates have been identified as carcinogens and mutagens. Sixteen of these PAH have been listed by the USEPA as priority pollutants. This research is concerned with the development and optimisation of a method for the analysis of these sixteen PAH in air particulates. Soxhlet and ultrasonic extraction procedures were investigated to optimise the recoveries from spiked glass fibre filters with a standard 1ppm mixture of the 16PAH. Standard mixtures of the 16 PAH were analysed by HPLC with fluorescence detection with approx. linearity …

Search For Invisible Higgs Boson Decays In E+E- Collisions At Centre-Of-Mass Energies Up To 184 Gev, R. Barate, Manoj Thulasidas Jan 1999

Search For Invisible Higgs Boson Decays In E+E- Collisions At Centre-Of-Mass Energies Up To 184 Gev, R. Barate, Manoj Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In a data sample of 78.3 pb−1 collected in 1996 and 1997 by the ALEPH detector at centre-of-mass energies from 161 to 184 GeV, invisible decays of a Higgs boson have been searched for in the reaction e+e− → hZ, where the Z can decay into e+e−, µ+µ− or q¯q. No evidence for a signal is found and limits on the production cross section are derived as a function of the Higgs boson mass. These results are combined with those obtained in an update of the analyses of the ALEPH data taken at LEP 1. For a production cross section …

Photochemical And Thermal Reactions Of Nitrous Acid In A Benzene Matrix, Ethan Schrum '99 Jan 1999

Photochemical And Thermal Reactions Of Nitrous Acid In A Benzene Matrix, Ethan Schrum '99

Honors Projects

The photodegradation of nitrous acid in the troposphere is an initiation step in the formation of photochemical smog. NOx emissions from internal combustion engines react with atmospheric water vapor during sundown hours to form nitrous acid. Daytime sunlight cleaves nitrous acid into OB and NO radicals, which attack hydrocarbons emitted by industry to form the constituents of photochemical smog. In order to increase our understanding of these reactions, we have studied them in the liquid phase. Aqueous nitrous acid was extracted into a liquid benzene matrix to form a clear solution of approximately 0.075 M nitrous acid in benzene, which …

Interactive Multireslution Curve Editing Using, Stephen P. Alberg Jan 1999

Interactive Multireslution Curve Editing Using, Stephen P. Alberg

Open Access Master's Theses

Precise curve fitting is an important feature of many computer applications, from statistical analysis cools, co the editors used by font and graphic designers, co the sophisticated computer-aided design/manufacturing environments developed for engineering systems. B-splines are the most widely used curve forms in such applications; composed of piecewise parametric cubic segments, they are notable for their compact representation, computational efficiency and, in particular, the high degree of continuity they enforce between successive curve segments. Such continuity, however, inhibits the freedom with which local, finer resolution editing may be performed on these curves. Refinement is most directly accomplished by inserting knots …

Elucidation Of Hot Melt Wax Coating Systems, Anand S. Achanta

Open Access Master's Theses

Hot melt coating methods are an interesting alternative to commonly used aqueous polymeric film coating methods. A critical evaluation of development of hot melt coating methods for sustained drug release and protection of moisture labile active ingredient applications has been performed. A detailed examination of the interaction of water with excipient films of pharmaceutical significance is reported. As water is an important detrimental variable in performance of pharmaceutical dosage forms, the description of a convenient method to characterize the interaction of water with excipient films is very useful. The widespread use of coated pharmaceutical products for a variety of applications …

Adsorbtion Of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons Contaminated Water With Granular Activated Carbon, Adedeji O. Adeyoye Jan 1999

Adsorbtion Of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons Contaminated Water With Granular Activated Carbon, Adedeji O. Adeyoye

Open Access Master's Theses

This study evaluated the effectiveness of granular activated carbon in treating hydrocarbons contaminated groundwater. Contaminated groundwater samples were obtained from the airfield refueling area of the former Davisville - Quonset Point Naval Complex at North Kingstown, R.I. Previous studies on the site showed the contaminants as a mixture of JP 5 and aviation fuel, but because of the changes that might have taken place within the constituents of the groundwater contaminants due to aging, volatilization, exposure and interaction with the soils minerals and groundwater, the contaminants are characterized as Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH).

This study conducted isotherm studies on the …

None of the 4 subjects had received formal …

The Limits Of Social Choice Theory: A Defense Of The Voting Rights Act, Grant M. Hayden Jan 1999

The Limits Of Social Choice Theory: A Defense Of The Voting Rights Act, Grant M. Hayden

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This Article presents a defense to the challenge that social choice theory presents to voting rights. Arrows theorem, the crown jewel of social choice theory, holds that no voting procedure that meets some minimal conditions of democratic fairness can ensure transitive, meaningful outcomes. The theorem provides a powerful argument against the ability of any court to devise objective vote dilution standards. Because such standards are now a necessary element of claims under section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, Arrows theorem may be viewed as a fundamental threat to the viability of all such claims. The defense of voting rights …

A Classification Of Techniques For The Compensation Of Time Delayed Processes. Part 1: Parameter Optimised Controllers, Aidan O'Dwyer, John Ringwood

Conference papers

An extensive literature exists on the compensation of time delayed processes. It is possible to identify themes that are common to many of the available techniques. The intention of the two parts of this paper is to provide a framework against which the literature may be viewed; Part 1 of the paper considers the use of parameter optimised controllers for the compensation problem, with Part 2 of the paper considering the use of structurally optimised compensators. Conclusions are drawn at the end of Part 2.

Legal Rules And Social Reform, Emily Sherwin Jan 1999

Legal Rules And Social Reform, Emily Sherwin

San Diego Law Review

Rules are designed to reduce error by prescribing actions that, in the run of cases, will produce better results than the subjects of rules would obtain if they judged for themselves what to do. At the same time, rules sometimes produce errors when applied to particular cases. If the sum of error under rules is less than the sum of error rules prevent, then the rule-making authority has reason to issue "serious" rules-rules to be followed in every case. Because rules are imperfect, however, the subjects of rules do not always have good reason to follow them. This means that …

Intelligent Control Strategies For An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Paul Jason Craven Jan 1999

Intelligent Control Strategies For An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Paul Jason Craven

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The dynamic characteristics of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) present a control problem that classical methods cannot often accommodate easily. Fundamentally, AUV dynamics are highly non-linear, and the relative similarity between the linear and angular velocities about each degree of freedom means that control schemes employed within other flight vehicles are not always applicable. In such instances, intelligent control strategies offer a more sophisticated approach to the design of the control algorithm. Neurofuzzy control is one such technique, which fuses the beneficial properties of neural networks and fuzzy logic in a hybrid control architecture. Such an approach is highly suited to …

Modelling Of Swash Zone Sediment Transport On Coarse Grained Beaches, Eur Ing Erik Van Wellen Jan 1999

Modelling Of Swash Zone Sediment Transport On Coarse Grained Beaches, Eur Ing Erik Van Wellen

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

A review is presented which assesses the importance of the swash zone as a potential contributor to the longshore and cross-shore transport on steep coarse-grained beaches. Based on this review it is apparent that the swash zone on such beaches forms an important contributor to both the longshore and the cross-shore transport. The review also identifies that the swash zone is neglected in all but a few sediment transport models. In addition, a lack of available shingle beach field data against which to validate existing and new transport models is also reported. Two surf zone integrated equations are presented with …
