Effects Of 4-N-Nonylphenol On Life-History Traits And Population Dynamics Of A Polychaete, Flemming T. Hansen, Valery E. Forbes, Thomas L. Forbes Jan 1999

Effects Of 4-N-Nonylphenol On Life-History Traits And Population Dynamics Of A Polychaete, Flemming T. Hansen, Valery E. Forbes, Thomas L. Forbes

Valery Forbes Publications

A Life-Table-Response Experiment lasting 78 d was performed to investigate the toxic effects of sediment-associated 4-n-nonylphenol (NP) on growth, reproduction, and survivorship of isolated hermaphrodites of the infaunal polychaete Capitella sp. I. Demographic effects were evaluated using both a fully age-classified and a simple twostage model to estimate population growth rates (λ). Decomposition analysis was performed to explore the contributions of each of the affected life-history traits to the effects observed on l. Elasticity analysis was applied to examine the relative sensitivity of λ to changes in each of the different life-history traits under different exposure levels.

A Distributed-Memory Implementation Of Kiva-3 With Refinements For Large Eddy Simulation., Aytekin Gel Jan 1999

A Distributed-Memory Implementation Of Kiva-3 With Refinements For Large Eddy Simulation., Aytekin Gel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In spite of the tremendous advancement of computer technology within the last decade, today's grand challenge problems are still beyond the numerical simulation capability of the most state-of-the-art hardware. Fluid dynamics problems involving the prediction capability for turbulent flows represent one example for such situations. Large eddy simulation (LES) is a viable alternative to direct numerical simulation (DNS) of turbulent flows due to the fact that certain portion of the detailed small-scale information resolved in DNS is suppressed in LES technique in order to make the computational problem more tractable. However, even with LES, today's challenging problems require accurate schemes …

Selecting The Most Qualified Teacher Applicant Utilizing West Virginia Code Section 18a-4-7a., Paul E. Barcus

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of county school superintendents, county personnel directors, principals, and teachers in West Virginia who had been involved in the teacher selection process concerning the effectiveness of West Virginia State Code §18A-4-7a. More specifically, this study examined the perceived effectiveness of the second set of criteria found therein in leading to the employment of the most qualified applicant for a classroom teaching position in the public schools of West Virginia. A descriptive research design through a questionnaire was used which involved the analysis of the responses by the participants in the …

The Effects Of Teaching In A Professional Development School And The National Council Of Teachers Of Mathematics Professional Standards., Laora Dauberman Brizendine

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' (NCTM) Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics presents a vision of what necessary components should be included in teaching mathematics to support the reforms presented in the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards . The six Professional Standards offer insight, guidance, and vignettes explaining how a mathematics teacher at the K–12 levels can and should guide their students in the attainment of mathematical power. The Holmes Group, a consortium of Deans from Colleges of Education within large research universities in the United States, has as its primary goal to reform teacher education programs as well as …

The Future Of Bioethics Testimony: Guidelines For Determining Qualifications, Reliability, And Helpfulness, Bethany Spielman, George Agich Jan 1999

The Future Of Bioethics Testimony: Guidelines For Determining Qualifications, Reliability, And Helpfulness, Bethany Spielman, George Agich

San Diego Law Review

This Article addresses key questions about expert bioethics testimony4 from within the framework of the basic rule concerning expert witnesses, Federal Rule of Evidence 702.' This Rule6 requires judges to affirmatively answer three basic questions before admitting expert testimony: (1) does this witness qualify as an expert by knowledge, skill, experience, training, or education; (2) does the testimony consist of scientific, technical or other specialized knowledge; and (3) will the testimony assist the trier of fact. Bioethics testimony presents distinctive problems in each area, on which commentators have not necessarily focused. Part II of this Article addresses the question of …

A Discrete Choice Based Facility Location Model For Inland Container Depots., Yuanquan Xu Jan 1999

A Discrete Choice Based Facility Location Model For Inland Container Depots., Yuanquan Xu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Container transport operations have been extending inland, providing more comprehensive service across the shipping network. Accordingly, container transport operators are making extensive capital investments in deploying inland container depot (ICD) networks. Optimizing the location of such facilities financially is vital for both capital and operating efficiencies. Currently, there are no models at the regional network level to guide container operators in locating ICDs on their networks. This research studies the ICD location problem and develops a comprehensive ICD location model. Based on comprehensive analysis of the container transport industry, focusing on ICD operations, this thesis developed a useful formulation of …

A Comparison Of Dental And Skeletal Changes Between Rapid Palatal Expansion And Nickel Titanium Palatal Expansion., Christopher Ciambotti Jan 1999

A Comparison Of Dental And Skeletal Changes Between Rapid Palatal Expansion And Nickel Titanium Palatal Expansion., Christopher Ciambotti

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Expansion of the maxilla is used to correct skeletal and dental transverse discrepancies between the maxilla and mandible. These discrepancies are corrected through a combination of skeletal expansion (separation of the maxillary midpalatal suture) and dental expansion ( lateral tipping of the maxillary posterior teeth). A recently introduced temperature-activated, nickel titanium (NITI) palatal expander is claimed to produce a light, continuous force which is capable of expanding the maxilla and correcting molar rotations. The skeletal and dental effects of the NITI expander on the maxilla have not been scientifically evaluated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare …

Texpert: Expert System For Evaluating Product Design For Worker's Safety And Health., Vikram V. Venneti Jan 1999

Texpert: Expert System For Evaluating Product Design For Worker's Safety And Health., Vikram V. Venneti

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Today, there is an increasing emphasis on the safety and health of a worker. Optimum resources are invested to ensure worker's safety. Most of the regulations, and other measures as suggested by NIOSH, OSHA and other leading safety organizations concentrate towards the steps that a worker needs to take to use a product safely. Instead, if the product itself is designed to be safe, and if the manufacturer of the product knows about the product's safety before usage, it would reduce a great deal of wastage of resources. This research is an attempt to implement the above ideology. The objective …
