(Ω, Ξ)-Logic: On The Algebraic Extension Of Coalgebraic Specifications, Rolf Hennicker, Alexander Kurz Jan 1999

(Ω, Ξ)-Logic: On The Algebraic Extension Of Coalgebraic Specifications, Rolf Hennicker, Alexander Kurz

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

We present an extension of standard coalgebraic specification techniques for statebased systems which allows us to integrate constants and n-ary operations in a smooth way and, moreover, leads to a simplification of the coalgebraic structure of the models of a specification. The framework of (Ω,Ξ)-logic can be considered as the result of a translation of concepts of observational logic (cf. [9]) into the coalgebraic world. As a particular outcome we obtain the notion of an (Ω, Ξ)- structure and a sound and complete proof system for (first-order) observational properties of specifications.

Two Examples Concerning Extendable And Almost Continuous Functions, Krzysztof Ciesielski Jan 1999

Two Examples Concerning Extendable And Almost Continuous Functions, Krzysztof Ciesielski

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The main purpose of this paper is to describe two examples. The first is that of an almost continuous, Baire class two, non-extendable function f:[0,1]-->[0,1] with a G\delta graph. This answers a question of Gibson. The second example is that of a connectivity function F:R2-->R with dense graph such that F-1(0) is contained in a countable union of straight lines. This easily implies the existence of an extendable function f:R-->R with dense graph such that f-1(0) is countable.

We also give a sufficient condition for a Darboux …

Compositions Of Darboux And Connectivity Functions, Krzysztof Ciesielski

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

We describe here an example of a Darboux function k from the unit interval I = [0, 1] onto itself such that k is not the composition of any finite collection of connectivity functions from I into I. This answers a question of Ceder [2].

Uniformly Antisymmetric Function With Bounded Range, Krzysztof Ciesielski Jan 1999

Uniformly Antisymmetric Function With Bounded Range, Krzysztof Ciesielski

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The goal of this note is to construct a uniformly antisymmetric function f : R → R with a bounded countable range. This answers Problem 1(b) of Ciesielski and Larson [6]. (See also the list of problems in Thomson [9] and Problem 2(b) from Ciesielski’s survey [5].) A problem of existence of uniformly antisymmetric function f : R → R with finite range remains open.

Transition State In Atomic Physics, Charles Jaffé, David Farrelly, T. Uzer Jan 1999

Transition State In Atomic Physics, Charles Jaffé, David Farrelly, T. Uzer

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The transition state is fundamental to modern theories of reaction dynamics: essentially, the transition state is a structure in phase space that all reactive trajectories must cross. While transition-state theory (TST) has been used mainly in chemical physics, it is possible to apply the theory to considerable advantage in any collision problem that involves some form of reaction. Of special interest are systems in which chaotic scattering or half-scattering occurs such as the ionization of Rydberg atoms in external fields. In this paper the ionization dynamics of a hydrogen atom in crossed electric and magnetic fields are shown to possess …

Including Best Available Science In The Designation And Protection Of Critical Areas Under The Growth Management Act, Alan D. Copsey Jan 1999

Including Best Available Science In The Designation And Protection Of Critical Areas Under The Growth Management Act, Alan D. Copsey

Seattle University Law Review

This Article discusses the meaning of these latter two requirements: the requirements to include best available science and to give special consideration to the conservation of anadromous fisheries. Section II defines "best available science" by examining the fundamental characteristics of scientific information applied in the context of the GMA. Expanding on the work of a technical team convened by DCTED, this Article suggests an approach useful for identifying scientific information and assessing which of that information should be considered the "best available science." Section III concludes that the requirement of RCW 36.70A. 172(1) to include best available science is a …

An Efficient Implementation Of The Transportation Problem, Alissa Michele Sustarsic Jan 1999

An Efficient Implementation Of The Transportation Problem, Alissa Michele Sustarsic

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The transportation problem is a special type of linear program in which the objective is to minimize the total cost of shipping a single commodity from a number of sources (m) to a number of destinations or sinks (n).

Because of the special structure of the transportation problem, a special algorithm can be designed to find an optimal solution efficiently. Due to the large amount of information in the problem, judicious storage and management of the data are essential requirements of any viable implementation of the transportation algorithm.

Using sparse matrix techniques to store the solution …

Ethics And The Internet Studies, Steve Jones Jan 1999

Ethics And The Internet Studies, Steve Jones

Iowa Journal of Communication

Insufficient attention has been paid to the practical as well as methodological dimensions of the ethics of online research. Though discussion of research methods for the study of online social phenomena has recently come to the fore, questions concerning the development and implementation of ethical guidelines, the conditions of research, and basic definitions of objects and subjects of study have yet to be fully engaged. This essay maps out some of the terrain of that engagement. It asks questions about the consequences of research, and notes that the Internet is not only technology but a practice that must be situated …

Minority Preferences Reconsidered, Terrance Sandalow Jan 1999

Minority Preferences Reconsidered, Terrance Sandalow

Reviews

During the academic year 1965-66, at the height of the civil rights movement, the University of Michigan Law School faculty looked around and saw not a single African-American student. The absence of any black students was not, it should hardly need saying, attributable to a policy of purposeful exclusion. A black student graduated from the Law School as early as 1870, and in the intervening years a continuous flow of African-American students, though not a large number, had been admitted and graduated. Some went on to distinguished careers in the law.

History Of The Forum On Physics And Society, David W. Hafemeister Jan 1999

History Of The Forum On Physics And Society, David W. Hafemeister

Physics

Physics is a major component of many of society's difficult issues: nuclear arms and their proliferation, energy shortages and energy impacts, climate change and technical innovation. Because physics principles underlie so many of these societal issues and because physics offers a way to quantify some aspects of them, members of the American Physical Society (APS) should be encouraged to understand, analyze and debate them. That's precisely why APS members formed the Forum on Physics and Society (FPS). To those of us who have been long involved in FPS affairs, it seems but yesterday that we attended the organizing meeting at …

Towards More User-Friendly Education For Speakers Of Aboriginal English, Ian G. Malcolm, Yvonne Haig, Patricia Konsignberg, Judith Rochecouste, Glenys Collard, Alison Hill, Rosemary Cahill

Research outputs pre 2011

The project reported on here set out, on a basis of cooperation between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal investigators working in university, educational system and classroom contexts, to lead to understandings which would enable a more accessible ("userfriendly") education to be provided for students in primary and secondary schools who are speakers of Aboriginal English.

Specifically, in the context of schools of the Education Department of Western Australia, the project sought to:

1. extend knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal English and its areas of contrast with standard Australian English;

2. provide clarification in the following under-researched areas of Aboriginal English:

a) semantic …

Enhancing The Process Of Testing Object -Oriented Systems., Ihssan Salim Alkadi Jan 1999

Enhancing The Process Of Testing Object -Oriented Systems., Ihssan Salim Alkadi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Testing is a crucial step in the overall system development process. Using testing techniques that support features of the underlying software paradigm more effectively tests program than do testing techniques that support features of other paradigms. Systems developed with the object-oriented paradigm require techniques that support object-oriented features such as inheritance, data abstraction, encapsulation, and dynamic binding. Many techniques that are used to test systems developed with the structured paradigm are not sufficient for the testing of object-oriented systems. The goal of this research is to develop methods that will improve the process of testing object-oriented systems. Specifically, emphasis is …

On The Numerical Solution Of The Cylindrical Poisson Equation For Isolated Self -Gravitating Systems., Howard Saul Cohl Jan 1999

On The Numerical Solution Of The Cylindrical Poisson Equation For Isolated Self -Gravitating Systems., Howard Saul Cohl

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation addresses the need for an accurate and efficient technique which solves the Poisson equation for arbitrarily complex, isolated, self-gravitating fluid systems. Generally speaking, a potential solver is composed of two distinct pieces: a boundary solver and an interior solver. The boundary solver computes the potential, phi(xB) on a surface which bounds some finite volume of space, V, and contains an isolated mass-density distribution, rho(x). Given rho(x) and phi(xB), the interior solver computes the potential phi(x) everywhere within V. Herein, we describe the development of a numerical technique which efficiently solves Poisson's equation in cylindrical coordinates on massively parallel …

Clarinet Concertos By Post World War Ii Generation Norwegian Composers: Bjorn Kruse, Olav Berg, And Rolf Wallin., Beverly Ann Gibson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A substantial body of Norwegian clarinet literature exists that is infrequently performed outside of the Scandinavian countries and Europe. A new generation of composers emerged in the 1980s who have made visible their own individual approaches to composition. This monograph focuses on a selection of clarinet concertos composed by Bjorn Kruse (b. 1946), Olav Berg (b. 1949), and Rolf Wallin (b. 1957) which represent the most extensive pieces for clarinet in the respective composers' outputs to date and have been awarded prizes in composition contests. The composers have distinguished themselves as leading figures in the contemporary music scene in Norway, …

Pine-Polyethylene (Wood -Polymer) Composites: Synthesis And Mechanical Behavior Characterization., Parviz S. Razi Jan 1999

Pine-Polyethylene (Wood -Polymer) Composites: Synthesis And Mechanical Behavior Characterization., Parviz S. Razi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Processing of recycled wood chips, recently produced after extraction of creosote from telephone posts and railroad crossties, and combining them with a recycled polymer for the synthesis of novel composite materials would initiate a new trend toward preservation of natural resources. The challenge is taken in this work to produce and study the properties of such materials for further advancement of science. In the present study, addition of pine wood chips to HDPE reduced the tensile strength and break strain in tensile loading. Smaller wood chips generally resulted in smaller reductions. Peak load, modulus of rupture and stiffness were slightly …

Design Of Work-Rest Schedules For Vdt Operators., Rana Balci Jan 1999

Design Of Work-Rest Schedules For Vdt Operators., Rana Balci

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The number of musculoskeletal and psychological discomforts is increasing as a result of continuing growth of VDT work. Although ergonomic improvements in workstation design can be applied, an effective work-rest schedule is an economical way to reduce these problems. The objective of this research was to determine an effective work-rest schedule for VDT operators. In addition to a discomfort questionnaire, performance and electromyography measurements from trapezius and flexor carpi radialis were used. Three different work-rest schedules were applied: 60-minute work/10-minute rest, 30-minute work/5-minute rest, and for the third schedule, the subjects received four breaks from VDT work each hour additional …

How Does Undergraduate College Biology Students' Level Of Understanding, In Regard To The Role Of The Seed Plant Root System, Relate To Their Level Of Understanding Of Photosynthesis?, James Gicheha Njeng'ere

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research study investigated how undergraduate college biology students' level of understanding of the role of the seed plant root system relates to their level of understanding of photosynthesis. This research was conducted with 65 undergraduate non-majors biology who had completed 1 year of biology at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond. A root probe instrument was developed from some scientifically acceptable propositional statements about the root system, the process of photosynthesis, as well as the holistic nature of the tree. These were derived from research reviews of the science education and the arboriculture …
