Importance Of Convection And Damping On Rates Of Convergence For The Lax-Wendroff Method, Joseph Kolibal Jan 1999

Importance Of Convection And Damping On Rates Of Convergence For The Lax-Wendroff Method, Joseph Kolibal

Faculty Publications

It is well known that in solving steady state problems using hyperbolic time-stepping methods the intent is to drive the transients to zero as quickly as possible. In this paper the convergence to steady state of the Lax-Wendroff method applied to solving the equations of gas dynamics is analyzed for the Laval nozzle problem by comparing the relative rates of damping and convection using a linearized eigenmode analysis. This analysis is developed for the simpler isenthalpic system and then extended to the full Euler equations. Finally, this allows a comparison between these systems. For both models, useful analytical information can …

Racial And Ethnic Studies, Political Science And Mid-Wifery, Vine Deloria Jr., David E. Wilkins

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

One of the major fallacies of Western civilization, according to Alfred North Whitehead,' was the propensity of Western thinkers to assume that ideas generated within their intellectual landscape were indicative of reality itself. Although some phases of Western science, notably physics and philosophy, have transcended their parochial origins, aspects of the old medieval synthesis still remain in the Western worldview. The gradual fragmentation of the old categories of natural history and theology into the isolated sciences and disciplines of today has produced a myriad of separate bodies of knowledge complete with their professional priesthoods and has allowed considerable slippage in …

Y51k And Still Counting: Some Hindu Views Of Time, Vasudha Narayanan Jan 1999

Y51k And Still Counting: Some Hindu Views Of Time, Vasudha Narayanan

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

At the beginning of every religious ritual conducted in Hindu brahmanical modes, the officiating priest and those doing the ritual formally declare the co-ordinates of the land and the time in which the rite takes place. These words are part of the sankalpa or the declaration of intention to do the ritual. Such co-ordinates are in cosmic frameworks; the land is identified with one of the dvipas or islands in puranic cosmology and the timespan is given as a moment that occurs in a span of millions of years. The celebrant first announces the name of the kalpa (a span …

The Impact Of Fast Forword On Phonological Awareness And Literacy Skills, Melissa Nulty

Masters Theses

This study investigated the impact of Fast ForWord on individual children's phonological awareness and reading skills as well as general language and auditory processing skills. Five children, ages six through eight years, served as experimental subjects. The duration of participation in the Fast ForWord (FFW) training program was approximately 2 hours per day, 5 days a week, for 6 to 8 weeks. Fast ForWord training was completed when the subject reached at least 90 percent completion on five of the seven training exercises or when it was determined by the Fast ForWord professional that the child had received maximum benefit …

Investigating The Allosteric Behavior Of Malate Dehydrogenase From Escherichia Coli, Eman M. Ghanem Jan 1999

Investigating The Allosteric Behavior Of Malate Dehydrogenase From Escherichia Coli, Eman M. Ghanem

Masters Theses

Regulatory mechanisms of malate dehydrogenase from E.coli (eMDH) involving NADH as an allosteric effector were investigated. The reaction was studied in both directions: malate oxidation and oxaloacetate reduction. When malate was the variable substrate, a plot of rate against substrate concentration was sigmoidal in the presence of 0.065 mM NADH, which indicates the presence of an allosteric site for NADH on the enzyme. Binding of NADH at the allosteric site causes conformational changes in the active site and, thereby, changes the catalytic activity of the enzyme. An increase in Km value, from 1.3 to 3.9 mM malate was observed, …

Reasons For Home Schooling As Cited By Selected Parents In Central Illinois, Douglas A. Taylor Jan 1999

Reasons For Home Schooling As Cited By Selected Parents In Central Illinois, Douglas A. Taylor

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the specific reasons the home-schooling option was chosen by some parents in central Illinois. The number of parents who home school their children has increased significantly in recent years. Understanding the motives behind parents' decisions can provide important information on the home-schooling movement and these parents' perceptions about public education. By knowing the reasons the home-schooling option was selected, legislators, public school educators, and parents can initiate any changes that may be warranted.

The study took place in the fall of 1998 utilizing a survey instrument that was developed using information gleaned …

Optimization Of The Reaction Of Hexamethyldisilazane On A Fumed Silica Surface, Frederick R. Jones Jan 1999

Optimization Of The Reaction Of Hexamethyldisilazane On A Fumed Silica Surface, Frederick R. Jones

Masters Theses

Hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) is commonly used to transfer trimethylsilyl (TMS) groups to silica surfaces. While studies have been done examining individual factors that influence the reaction, no investigations have reported how these factors affect each other. The factors examined in this study include temperature, presence of catalyst (butylamine), pretreatment, time, concentration, solvent, and presence of water in the solvent. The purpose of this study is to examine potential factors and two-way interactions to determine which significantly affect the yield and produce an optimum set of conditions.

The HMDS reactions occurred in an organic solvent slurry under nitrogen. Using statistical experimental design, …

4-Carbechoxy-l-methyl-2-phenacyl-3-phenylpyrrole (9), 4-carbethoxy-2-(4-methoxybcnzoyl)-3-(4-methoxyphcnyl)pyrrole (10) and 2-(4-methoxybenzoyl)-3,4-bis-(4-methoxyphenyl)pyrrole (11) proved to be potent cytotoxic agents against the growth of murine and human leukemias and lymphomas. Selective toxicity was demonstrated against the growth of solid tumors, e.g. human adenocarcinoma of the colon SW480 and ileum HCT-8, glioma U-87-MG, and rat UMR-106 osteosarcoma. A mode of action study in Tmolt4 leukemia cells demonstrated that the agents inhibited de novo purine synthesis at the regulatory sites PRPP-amido transferase, IMP dehydrogenase as well as dihydrofolate reductase resulting in significant inhibition of DNA synthesis in 60 min. Other biochemical sites …

Assessment Of The Availability And Exploitation Of Hydric Resources In The Choquenaira Community, Luis Lizardo Iturry Urquizo Jan 1999

Assessment Of The Availability And Exploitation Of Hydric Resources In The Choquenaira Community, Luis Lizardo Iturry Urquizo

Theses and Dissertations

The precipitation data of the El Alto, Tambillo and Comanche stations are homogenous and consistent. The meteorological data from Irpa Chico, Collana and Viacha are consistent, but heterogeneous. The monthly precipitation in Viacha in December, January, March and April are better examples of a normal distribution in comparison to the months of October, November and February. The average annual precipitation in Viacha, in a thirty-four year time period, is 559 mm. Some 76% of this precipitation occurs in November to March. The minimum precipitation in Viacha, with an 80% probability of absence for the vegetative period, from October to April …

A Team Production Theory Of Corporate Law, Margaret M. Blair, Lynn A. Stout Jan 1999

A Team Production Theory Of Corporate Law, Margaret M. Blair, Lynn A. Stout

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Contemporary corporate scholarship generally assumes that the central economic problem addressed by corporation law is getting managers and directors to act as loyal agents for shareholders. We take issue with this approach and argue that the unique legal rules governing publicly-held corporations are instead designed primarily to address a different problem - the "team production" problem - that arises when a number of individuals must invest firm-specific resources to produce a nonseparable output. In such situations team members may find it difficult or impossible to draft explicit contracts distributing the output of their joint efforts, and, as an alternative, might …

How Do Judges Think About Risk?, W. Kip Viscusi Jan 1999

How Do Judges Think About Risk?, W. Kip Viscusi

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

A sample of almost 100 judges exhibited well-known patterns of biases in risk beliefs and reasonable implicit values of life. These biases and personal preferences largely do not affect attitudes toward judicial risk decisions, though there are some exceptions, such as ambiguity aversion, misinterpretation of negligence rules, and retrospective risk assessments in accident cases, which is a form of hindsight bias. Although judges avoided many pitfalls exhibited by jurors and the population at large, they nevertheless exhibited systematic errors, particularly for small probability-large loss events. These findings highlighted the importance of judicial review and the input of expert risk analysts …

The Co-Evolution Of Sustainable Development And Environmental Justice: Cooperation, Then Competition, Then Conflict, J.B. Ruhl Jan 1999

The Co-Evolution Of Sustainable Development And Environmental Justice: Cooperation, Then Competition, Then Conflict, J.B. Ruhl

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This article explores sustainable development and environmental justice as potentially conflicting policy goals. Sustainable development includes equity as one of its five dimensions (in addition to environment, economy, time, and space), whereas environmental justice focuses principally on equity. Over time there is likely to be an increasing number of contexts in which sustainability-based policy solutions do not satisfy environmental justice advocates.

Inverse Control And Stabilization Of Free-Flying Flexible Robots, G. De Rivals-Mazeres, Woosoon Yim, F. Mora-Camino, Sahjendra N. Singh Jan 1999

Inverse Control And Stabilization Of Free-Flying Flexible Robots, G. De Rivals-Mazeres, Woosoon Yim, F. Mora-Camino, Sahjendra N. Singh

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

The question of control and stabilization of flexible space robots is considered. Although, this approach is applicable to space robots of other configurations, for simplicity, a flexible planar two-link robot, mounted on a rigid floating platform, is considered. The robotic arm has two revolute joints and its links undergo elastic deformation in the plane of rotation. Based on nonlinear inversion technique, a control law is derived for controlling output variables describing the position and orientation of the platform and the joint angles of the robot. Although, the inverse controller accomplishes reference trajectory tracking, it excites the elastic modes of the …

Sinmap 2.0 - A Stability Index Approach To Terrain Stability Hazard Mapping, User's Manual, Robert T. Pack, David G. Tarboton, C. N. Goodwin

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

SINMAP 2.0 (Stability Index MAPping) is an ArcGIS 9.0 plug-in that implements the computation and mapping of a slope stability index based upon geographic information, primarily digital elevation data. This report describes the theoretical basis for the calculation of the stability index, describes the implementation, presents several case studies and describes use of the accompanying software. SINMAP has its theoretical basis in the infinite plane slope stability model with wetness (pore pressures) obtained from a topographically based steady state model of hydrology. Digital elevation model (DEM) methods are used to obtain the necessary input information (slope and specific catchment area). …

Phase Transitions In Project Scheduling, Willy Herroelen, Bert De Reyck Jan 1999

Phase Transitions In Project Scheduling, Willy Herroelen, Bert De Reyck

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Researchers in the area of artificial intelligence have recently shown that many NP-complete problems exhibit phase transitions. Often, problem instances change from being easy to being hard to solve to again being easy to solve when certain of their characteristics are modified. Most often the transitions are sharp, but sometimes they are rather continuous in the order parameters that are characteristic of the system as a whole. To the best of our knowledge, no evidence has been provided so far that similar phase transitions occur in NP-hard scheduling problems. In this paper we report on the existence of phase transitions …

2-(22, 8, 4) Designs Have No Blocks Of Type 3, Brendan Mckay, Stanislaw Radziszowski Jan 1999

2-(22, 8, 4) Designs Have No Blocks Of Type 3, Brendan Mckay, Stanislaw Radziszowski

Articles

Using computer algorithms we show that in any 2-(22,8,4) design there are no blocks of type 3, thus leaving as possible only types 1 and 2. Blocks of type 3, i.e. those which intersect two others in one point, are eliminated using the algorithms described in our previous paper. It was perhaps the second largest computation ever performed (after the solution to the RSA129 challenge), requiring more than a century of cpu time.

New Kinematic Models For Pacific-North America Motion From 3 Ma To Present, I: Evidence For Steady Motion And Biases In The Nuvel-1a Model, Charles Demets, Timothy H. Dixon Jan 1999

New Kinematic Models For Pacific-North America Motion From 3 Ma To Present, I: Evidence For Steady Motion And Biases In The Nuvel-1a Model, Charles Demets, Timothy H. Dixon

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

We use velocities derived from 2–4.5 years of continuous GPS observations at 21 sites on the Pacific and North American plates along with a subset of the NUVEL-1A data to examine the steadiness of Pacific-North America motion since 3.16 Ma, the transfer of Baja California to the Pacific plate, and the magnitude of biases in the NUVEL-1A estimate of Pacific-North America motion. We find that Pacific-North America motion has remained steady since 3.16 Ma, but at rates significantly faster than predicted by NUVEL-1A. In the vicinity of Baja California, our GPS-derived model and recent seafloor spreading rates in the southern …

Decelerating Nazca-South America And Nazca-Pacific Plate Motions, Edmundo O. Norabuena, Timothy H. Dixon, Seth Stein, Christopher G. A. Harrison

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Space geodetic estimates of the rate of Nazca-South America convergence and Nazca-Pacific spreading averaging over several years show that present day rates are significantly slower than the 3 million year average NUVEL-1A model. The implied rates of deceleration are consistent with longer term trends extending back to at least 20 Ma, about the time of initiation of Andes growth, and may reflect consequences of ongoing subduction and construction of the Andes, e.g., increased friction and viscous drag on the subducted slab as the leading edge of South America thickens.

Stratigraphy And Tectonics Of Tertiary Strata Of Southern Cache Valley, North-Central Utah, R. Q. Oaks Jr., K. A. Smith, Susanne U. Janecke, M. E. Perkins, W. P. Nash Jan 1999

Stratigraphy And Tectonics Of Tertiary Strata Of Southern Cache Valley, North-Central Utah, R. Q. Oaks Jr., K. A. Smith, Susanne U. Janecke, M. E. Perkins, W. P. Nash

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Southern Cache Valley occupies one of several large north-trending valleys in the northeastern part of the Basin and Range Province. It lies between the Wellsville Mountains in the west and the Bear River Range in the east. Paleozoic rocks exposed in the two mountain ranges dip easterly adjacent to the north part of the study area and in a narrow horst along the valley center in the south, but curve to a northerly dip in the southwest. A complex depositional and tectonic evolution of Tertiary strata in southern Cache Valley was determined in this study. Detailed photogeologic and field mapping, …
