Reviewing Software As A Means Of Enhancing Instruction, Marcus D. Childress, Guang-Lea Lee, Gregory P. Sherman Jan 1999

Reviewing Software As A Means Of Enhancing Instruction, Marcus D. Childress, Guang-Lea Lee, Gregory P. Sherman

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

A software review procedure developed by the authors is described. The procedure centers around a form that extends the functionality of traditional software evaluation forms by enhancing the use of the computer software in the early childhood classroom. The form encourages teachers to discover ways a piece of software can be integrated across disciplines and used as an anchor for instruction. Users of the review form are also encouraged to examine ways the software motivates the user to remain engaged in its use. The majority of the review form emphasizes the important role of the teacher in identifying outcomes or …

Reconciling Loss Aversion And Guilty Pleas, Richard Birke Jan 1999

Reconciling Loss Aversion And Guilty Pleas, Richard Birke

Utah Law Review

In the context of criminal law, a criminal defendant may choose to waive the right to trial because the defendant does not value objectively and appropriately the worth of a trial relative to the worth of a plea, or because the defendant lacks information to make an informed valuation. Until and unless a researcher's privilege comes to exist, one will have to speculate about why defendants are making bad choices, and accordingly, about the right way to fix the problem.

School-To-Work : What Does This Mean For Our Schools?, Amy K. Leonhart Jan 1999

School-To-Work : What Does This Mean For Our Schools?, Amy K. Leonhart

Graduate Research Papers

Over the course of fifty years the academic content of schools has changed dramatically. Today, employers are looking for different skills from their employees than they were in the 1950s. Therefore, schools have been given the assignment to teach young adults about surviving in the work force.

Where do these skills fit into the schools' curriculum? Is this just another item that is added to the plate of teachers? What time is the "right" time to start teaching these critical skills to youngsters? This paper examines those questions. It also focuses on the different aspects of the school-to-work initiative.

Integrated Science Unit : Ponds And Water, Evelyn K. Oliver Jan 1999

Integrated Science Unit : Ponds And Water, Evelyn K. Oliver

Graduate Research Papers

This instructional development project integrated the language arts and the science areas. The science content was ponds and water from the second grade curriculum. A rich learning environment was provided through a literature base, representing the different genres and related expressive activity. The unit was presented through teacher-directed activity and learning centers that offered many options from which children could select experiences.

The goals of the program were to give children more control over their learning and to extend children's thinking-language abilities by capitalizing on the common processes of the language arts and science areas and offering many opportunities to …

Perspectives On Early Literacy : The Monroe School, Mona S. Rosdail

Graduate Research Papers

This article is based on two days of observations and interviews in an all- kindergarten school in a small midwest city. The purpose of my research was to look at how the steps taken by this school correlate with the steps of Erickson's Dance in addressing the needs and development of the school when becoming an all-kindergarten literacy center. I feel that the information in this article would benefit educators who would like to implement changes in their schools.

The Relationship Between Learning Style And Academic Achievement In A Classroom Utilizing The Learning Cycle Teaching Strategy, Linda Kay Graber Jan 1999

The Relationship Between Learning Style And Academic Achievement In A Classroom Utilizing The Learning Cycle Teaching Strategy, Linda Kay Graber

Graduate Research Papers

This study asked the question: Is the gain in student achievement, in a classroom using the learning cycle teaching strategy, together with Kolb's Learning Style Inventory, different among eighth grade science students in the four cognitive learning modes identified by Kolb?

The population for this study consisted of eighth grade students at Price Laboratory School on the Campus of the University of Northern Iowa, located in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The study was a one-group pretest-posttest design in which gain in achievement was compared to learning style. Two student groups participated in a four week unit on the structure and function …

Two Current Approaches To Science In Early Education : The Physical-Knowledge Approach By Kamii And Devries And The Science Education Approach By Diane Dodge, Seon Chun Jan 1999

Two Current Approaches To Science In Early Education : The Physical-Knowledge Approach By Kamii And Devries And The Science Education Approach By Diane Dodge, Seon Chun

Graduate Research Papers

The primary focus of this paper is to review the characteristics of two science approaches to teaching science to children: the physical-knowledge approach by Kamii and De Vries, and the science education approach by Diane Dodge. Similarities and differences between the two approaches are analyzed. The conclusion of this study found that both approaches emphasize children's active role in learning. However, Kamii and DeVries's physical-knowledge approach emphasizes children's logical reasoning development, while Dodge's science education approach places greater emphasis on content and scientific knowledge.

Integrating Technology Into The Science Curriculum : Environmental Studies Grade 5, Lois Diane Enger Jan 1999

Integrating Technology Into The Science Curriculum : Environmental Studies Grade 5, Lois Diane Enger

Graduate Research Papers

The project was developed to illustrate a process for including hands-on use of technology in an environmental education activity. The requirements for an integrated curriculum identified by McRel are incorporated: science, technology, language arts, math, and life skills. Activities included are discussion of the topic, writing and editing a script, digital photography, computer usage including scanning, on-site visiting, and teacher and student evaluation. The on-site visit was conducted at a nature center.

Classroom activities involved planning, research, storyboarding, organizing visual materials, script writing, and creating a computer-generated presentation using mPOWER, a presentation software program. The completed computer presentation was converted …

Differentiating Type Of Muscle Movement Via Ar Modeling And Neural Network Classification, Beki̇r Karlik Jan 1999

Differentiating Type Of Muscle Movement Via Ar Modeling And Neural Network Classification, Beki̇r Karlik

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The aim of this study is to classify electromyogram (EMG) signals for controlling multifunction proshetic devices. An artificial neural network (ANN) implementation was used for this purpose. Autoregressive (AR) parameters of $a_1, a_2, a_3, a_4$ and their signal power obtained from different arm muscle motions were applied to the input of ANN, which is a multilayer perceptron. At the output layer, for 5000 iterations, six movements were distinguished at a high accuracy of 97.6%.

A Content Analysis Of Information Process Models, Aileen C. Meyer Jan 1999

A Content Analysis Of Information Process Models, Aileen C. Meyer

Graduate Research Papers

This study used content analysis of seven information process models which were published between the years of 1988 and 1997 to determine if these models share certain characteristics among themselves, and with recent educational theories. Findings indicate that the seven information process models do contain characteristics from the learning theories of metacognition, constructivism, and process education.

Monitoring The 1996 Drought Using The Standardized Precipitation Index, Michael J. Hayes, Mark D. Svoboda, Donald A. Wilhite, Olga V. Vanyarkho Jan 1999

Monitoring The 1996 Drought Using The Standardized Precipitation Index, Michael J. Hayes, Mark D. Svoboda, Donald A. Wilhite, Olga V. Vanyarkho

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Droughts are difficult to detect and monitor. Drought indices, most commonly the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI), have been used with limited success as operational drought monitoring tools and triggers for policy responses. Recently, a new index, the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), was developed to improve drought detection and monitoring capabilities. The SPI has several characteristics that are an improvement over previous indices, including its simplicity and temporal flexibility, that allow its application for water resources on all timescales. In this article, the 1996 drought in the southern plains and southwestern United States is examined using the SPI. A series …
