Codebook: The Lsay 1995 Year 9 Sample Wave 4 (1998) Technical Paper No. 18, Nicole Fleming
LSAY Technical Reports
In 1995, a nationally representative sample of approximately 13,000 Year 9 students was selected to form the first cohort of the new Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth program. The sample was constructed by randomly selecting two Year 9 classes from a national sample of 300 schools designed to represent state and sector. Reading and numeracy tests were administered to students in their schools to provide information on early school achievement for use in later analyses of educational and labour market participation. Students also completed a background questionnaire about their educational and vocational plans and attitudes to school. In 1996 these …

Abstract
Background: The potential economic effects of the allocation of cadaveric kidneys on the basis of tissue-matching criteria are controversial. We analyzed the economic costs associated with the transplantation of cadaveric kidneys with various numbers of HLA mismatches and examined the potential economic benefits of a local, as compared with a national, system designed to minimize HLA mismatches between donor and recipient in first cadaveric renal transplantations. Methods: All data were supplied by the U.S. Renal Data System. Data on all payments made by Medicare from 1991 through 1997 for the care of recipients of a first cadaveric renal transplant …

Redeeming The Symbols: Madeleine L'Engle And The Interpreting Of Contemporary Geometry In The Christian Tradition, C. Christopher Smith
Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016
In Madeleine L’Engle’s book, A Stone for a Pillow, she discusses how the Christian faith is often concerned with redeeming symbols into something good. This paper examines the redemption of contemporary geometry and how it reflects the truths of the Christian faith.

For Interval Computations, If Absolute-Accuracy Optimization Is Np-Hard, Then So Is Relative-Accuracy Optimization, Vladik Kreinovich
For Interval Computations, If Absolute-Accuracy Optimization Is Np-Hard, Then So Is Relative-Accuracy Optimization, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
One of the basic problems of interval computations is to compute a range of a given function f(x1,...,xn) over a given box (i.e., to compute the maximum and the minimum of the function on the box). For many classes of functions (e.g., for quadratic functions) this problem is NP-hard; it is even NP-hard if instead of computing the minimum and maximum exactly, we want to compute them with a given (absolute) accuracy. In practical situations, it is more realistic to ask for a relative accuracy; are the corresponding problems still NP-hard? We show that under some reasonable conditions, NP-hardness of …

Digital data storage is becoming ever more abundant and cheap. This, along with other technological advances, has brought about an age of mass storage of information, much of it in the form of images. In order to be able to process these stockpiles of image data, new and faster computer algorithms are needed.
One area of interest is that of image mosaicking, i.e., comparing two overlapping images and finding the proper scaling, angle of rotation, and translation needed to fit one with the other. Early methods for mosaicking images included visual inspection or exhaustive, pixel by pixel, search for the …
Scheduling Semiconductor Device Test Operations On Multihead Testers, Tali Freed, Robert C. Leachman
Scheduling Semiconductor Device Test Operations On Multihead Testers, Tali Freed, Robert C. Leachman
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
Past attempts to devise scheduling methods for the device test operations of semiconductor manufacturing firms fail to address a significant characteristic of multiple-head test systems—the dependency of processing rates on the lots processed simultaneously on the testers. Since the problem has never been modeled accurately in the scheduling literature, feasibility and performance of previously proposed scheduling methodologies for multihead testers may not be accurately assessed. In this paper, we describe the multihead tester scheduling problem, present an enumeration solution procedure, and illustrate the problems of previously suggested tester scheduling algorithms.

An Evaluation Of Ploughing Models For Orthogonal Machining, Daniel J. Waldorf, Richard E. Devor, Shiv G. Kapoor
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
An analytical comparison is made between two basic models of the flow of workpiece material around the edge of an orthogonal cutting tool during steady-state metal removal. Each has been the basis for assumptions in previous studies which attempt to model the machining process, but no direct comparison had been made to determine which, if either, is an appropriate model. One model assumes that a separation point exists on the rounded cutting edge while the other includes a stable build-up adhered to the edge and assumes a separation point at the outer extreme of the build-up. Theories of elastic-plastic deformation …
The Pi Code, Michael Keith
The Pi Code, Michael Keith
Word Ways
Martin Gardner's fictional Doctor Matrix used to say that, property interpreted, the number pi (the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, whose decimal expansion begins 3.14159265897932384626...) contains the entire history of mankind. In this article I give some results of looking at pi in a relatively new way: as an infinite string of letters derived from its expansion in base 26 or base 27.

Diane sat quietly, watching the evening sunlight speckle through the trees. It would be pretty, she thought, if only it didn't show the dirt on the kitchen window so vividly. "What a mess this place is," she said, half out loud. He would be back soon, and then she would have to ask about the gun in the bedroom drawer. That it was Lent, and she was hungry, only added to her ever-growing list of disgruntlement.

Lead Binding To Metal Oxide And Organic Phases Of Natural Aquatic Biofilms, Yarrow M. Nelson, Leonard W. Lion, Michael L. Shuler, William C. Ghiorse
Civil and Environmental Engineering
The role of the composition of surface-coating materials in controlling trace metal adsorption in aquatic environments was investigated using natural biofilms that developed on glass slides in three New York State lakes and a water-supply well. Adsorption isotherms were obtained for Pb binding to each of the biofilms in solutions with defined Pb speciation at 25°C and pH 6.0, with Pb concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 2.0 μM. Adsorption isotherms for Pb binding to laboratory-derived metal oxides and surrogate organic materials were determined under the same conditions. These isotherms, combined with characterization of natural biofilm composition, were used to estimate …

This study examined how Utah children used emergency medical services (EMS) and related hospital care in 1991-1992. The EMS and hospital records were linked using special software (probabilistic linkage) . The principal findings of the study concerned the care of young children less than 5 years of age. They received fewer procedures prior to being transported to a hospital and required more time at the scene for assessment. Some interventions such as splinting of fractured arms prior to transport to a hospital were related to reduced hospital charges. Ambulance and hospital charges for children were estimated to by $35,000,000 not …

Defining A New Type Of Organizational Leadership: The Heroic Leader, Ira J. Morrow
Defining A New Type Of Organizational Leadership: The Heroic Leader, Ira J. Morrow
Faculty Working Papers and Articles
In this paper the concepts of leadership and heroism are defined, discussed, and compared. The concepts are then integrated to form an orientation toward leadership known as heroic leadership. A model of heroic leadership consisting of five major dimensions including character, work orientation, risk-taking and reward orientation, relating to others, and organizational impact is then presented and discussed. Major sub-elements for each dimension are also identified and examined. The implications for leadership in non-heroic organizational settings are highlighted.

Construct Validity Of The Continuous Recognition Memory Test, K. L. Fuchs, J. H. Hannay, W. M. Huckeba, K. A. Espy
Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications
A principal factor analysis was performed on variables derived from a neuropsychological battery administered to 100 healthy young adults (aged 17-41 yrs) to investigate the construct validity of the Continuous Recognition Memory test (CRM). It was hypothesized that CRM "hits" and "false alarms" would load on different factors. The factors that emerged in the analysis were labeled Verbal Ability, Divided Attention, Attention to Visual Detail, Visuomotor Integration and Planning, and Learning and Memory. As expected, CRM hits had a significant loading on the Learning and Memory factor. However, CRM false alarms did not have a significant loading on the Divided …

Towards Mathematical Foundations Of Information Retrieval: Dependence Of Website's Relevance On The Number Of Occurrences Of A Queried Word, Laszlo Koczy, Vladik Kreinovich, Yohanz Mendoza, Hung T. Nguyen, Harry Schulte

In response to a query, web search tools often return many websites which are not really relevant. One reason for this is that the queried word may have several meanings different to the one which the user has in mind. To eliminate these undesirable meanings, it is reasonable to look for occurrences not only of the queried word itself, but also for other words related to this particular meaning, and then select only the websites for which, based on this information, we are confident about their relevance. For this strategy to work, we must be able to estimate the degree …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures
The inshore environment of Broward County, FL consists of three coral reef/hard bottom reef tracts, separated by sand substrate, running parallel to the coast in sequentially deeper water. At quarter nautical mile intervals, for a five mile coastline section, fishes were censused at western, eastern and crest sites of each of the three reef tracts. On SCUBA and using the Bohnsack/Bannerot point-count method, we recorded: fish abundance, species richness, size, and general habitat of an imaginary cylinder 15 m in diameter. The position of each site was recorded by DGPS after census. One hundred and eighty-one sites were censused during …

New techniques developed for near-surface turbulence measurements during the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere (TOGA) Coupled Ocean–Atmosphere Response Experiment (COARE) employ a difference in spatial scales of turbulence and surface waves. According to this approach, high relative speed of the measurements provides separation of the turbulence and surface wave signals. During the TOGA COARE field studies, highresolution probes of pressure, temperature, conductivity, fluctuation velocity, and acceleration were mounted on the bow of the vessel at a 1.7-m depth in an undisturbed region ahead of the moving vessel. The localization in narrow frequency bands of the vibrations of the bow sensors allows …
