Linking Printed Books To Computerized Speech, Edward D. Crook Jan 1999

Linking Printed Books To Computerized Speech, Edward D. Crook

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Adult students who experience difficulties in comprehending written (printed) language frequently are limited in their scholastic development and possible employment opportunities. These individuals, who represent a growing segment of the learning disabled population, include poor readers and dyslexics and they routinely seek help and remediation through various educational techniques. One remediation technique often used is "books on tape". Through books on tape, recorded spoken text is presented in a sequential manner to the remedial reader as he or she is reading the corresponding printed document. This dissertation reviewed the books on tape paradigm, and through the use of current computer …

Major- And Minor-Element Analysis Of Apollo 14 Volcanic Green Glasses B, And Petrogenic Modeling Of Apollo 14 Green Glasses A And B, Vera Assis Fernandes Jan 1999

Major- And Minor-Element Analysis Of Apollo 14 Volcanic Green Glasses B, And Petrogenic Modeling Of Apollo 14 Green Glasses A And B, Vera Assis Fernandes

Geology Theses and Dissertations

The lunar picritic volcanic glasses have been identified as being quenched samples of primary magmas extruded onto the lunar surface via fire-fountains. The study of the composition of these glasses is of extreme importance for the understanding of the Moon's mantle composition and petrogenetic processes.
Based on their chemical signature (low-Ti and high Mg#) and physical characteristics, the lunar picritic glasses are believed to represent primary magmas. Experimental data suggest that these melts formed at 360-500 km depth (18-25 kbar) in the lunar mantle, and were transported onto the lunar surface through a "channel" network (McKenzie, 1985b) that isolated these …

The Geology Of The Liberty-Orrington-Passagassawakeag/Fredericton Trough Terrane Boundary In The Bucksport-Orland Area, Coastal Maine, Heather A. Short Jan 1999

The Geology Of The Liberty-Orrington-Passagassawakeag/Fredericton Trough Terrane Boundary In The Bucksport-Orland Area, Coastal Maine, Heather A. Short

Geology Theses and Dissertations

The Liberty-Orrington fault separates two tectonic terranes of widely different lithologies and metamorphic grades within the Coastal Lithotectonic Belt of Maine. While the juxtaposition of the sillimanite-bearing Passagassawakeag gneiss and the chlorite grade Bucksport Formation (turbidites) requires a fault between them, field evidence for, and an understanding of, the nature of the fault has hitherto been lacking. Although the Liberty-Orrington fault has previously been interpreted as a thrust, strike-slip, and/or normal fault, the most recent debate has been centered around two models of Acadian amalgamation involving thrusting of the Passagassawakeag terrane from the southeast vs. thrusting from beneath central Maine …

The Development Of An Appraisal Instrument And Subsequent Evaluation Of Middle School Science Curricula, Julie Wasmund Jan 1999

The Development Of An Appraisal Instrument And Subsequent Evaluation Of Middle School Science Curricula, Julie Wasmund

Honors Capstones

Within the last few years, standards of education have become an influence on the construction and assessment of school curricula In order to evaluate middle school science programs. a rubric was developed based on the National Science Education Standards and the Illinois Learning Standards for Science. Middle school science curricula were acquired from three different districts: Community Unit District U-46, Naperville School District 203. and DeKalb Community Unit District #428. Each curriculum was perused and evaluated using the rubric. Because a rubric is subjective in its nature, additional comments were made in regards to each district's curriculum. There was variance …

Synthesis Of Novel Sesquiterpene Lactones: Heritianin, Vallapianin And Vallapin, Kostas Gavardinas '99

Honors Projects

For decades considerable research has focused on improving the efficiency of crop protection. Many naturally occurring biodegradable compounds have often been used as pesticides and with increased environmental concerns, the identification of biologically active natural products has attracted significant attention. Fish toxicity has often been used as a measure of pesticidal activity. Several Southeast Asian mangrove species have been shown to possess ichthyotoxic properties. A bioassay of the extracts obtained from Heritiera littoralis, a Philippine mangrove plant, indicated toxicity toward fish thus suggesting the possibility of their use as pesticides. Three sesquiterpene lactones, Heritianin, Vallapin, and Vallapianin have been isolated …

National Collecting Trends: Collection Analysis Methods And Findings, Anna H. Perrault Jan 1999

National Collecting Trends: Collection Analysis Methods And Findings, Anna H. Perrault

School of Information Faculty Publications

The primary focus of collection evaluation and assessment has been the subjective judgment of the strengths and weaknesses of library collections. The process has generally been a local application, often utilizing peer group comparative data. Quantitative collection analysis to support the subjective processes of collection evaluation and assessment is now almost universally conducted through extraction of data from local systems or network databases. National collecting patterns can be studied through the use of data extracted from the bibliographic utilities. This article examines the use of data from the OCLC/AMIGOS Collection Analysis CD and standard statistical series as a methodology for …

Snapshots Of Success: Examples Of Imsa Graduates In The Arts & Humanities, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Examples of Student Diversity

We are very proud of the arts and humanities programs at IMSA. Our faculty and students have distinguished themselves in countless ways and in our Longitudinal Study of IMSA graduates, our alumni often cite arts and humanities learning experiences as among their most valuable and cherished experiences at IMSA.

From IMSA's perspective, the arts and humanities serve as a unique structure for the integration of knowledge among disciplines and provide students with a set of cultural and ethical perspectives that frame understanding of mathematics and science. We believe that the integration of disciplines, if done so in a meaningful and …

1998-99 Annual Report, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy Jan 1999

1998-99 Annual Report, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Annual Reports

For far too long, too many educational environments have been schooling environments focused on teacher- delivered and student-received information rather than learning environments focused on teacher- facilitated and student-generated knowledge. This must change. Young people are capable of extraordinary achievements and significant contributions, and it is the responsibility of educators, parents, taxpayers, policymakers and the business community to provide learning environments that make this possible. With your continuing support, IMSA will work continuously, diligently and resolutely to model and help others become such a learning environment.

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Egypt holds a unique place among developing countries due to its longstanding commitment to gather information on the numbers and well-being of its population. But until now, there has never been a systematic effort to gather data on the group of young Egyptians poised between childhood and adulthood—its adolescents. Today, Egypt has the largest cohort of adolescents in its history, more than 13 million boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 19 according to its 1996 census. Their experiences during the transition to adulthood will profoundly affect how the nation makes its transition into the next century. This …

Mortality Decline And The Demographic Response: Toward A New Agenda, Mark R. Montgomery Jan 1999

Mortality Decline And The Demographic Response: Toward A New Agenda, Mark R. Montgomery

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

A central proposition of demographic transition theory is that declines in infant and child mortality can encourage subsequent declines in fertility. Even the earliest formulations of the theory recognized that fertility decline would occur only with a lag, but neither theory nor empirical work has explored the length of such lags. This paper urges that individual perceptions and beliefs about mortality risks, conspicuously absent from the demographic research agenda, be studied directly. It proceeds to link mortality perceptions to health care decisionmaking and investments in children. The paper concludes by calling for a new agenda on mortality decline. This agenda …

Experimental Determination Of \Beta And \Gamma Critical Exponents In The Sol-Gel Phase Transition By Using Steady-State Fluorescence Technique, Y. Yilmaz, Ö. Pekcan Jan 1999

Experimental Determination Of \Beta And \Gamma Critical Exponents In The Sol-Gel Phase Transition By Using Steady-State Fluorescence Technique, Y. Yilmaz, Ö. Pekcan

Turkish Journal of Physics

The gelation of methyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate was studied using the steady-state fluorescence technique. Samples with various crosslinker densities were prepared and sol-gel phase transitions were observed at various temperatures. Percolation theory was employed to interpret the results. For all samples the gel fraction and the average cluster size exponents, \beta and \gamma, were measured and found to be around 0.42 and 1.7 respectively. These values show excellent agreement with theoretical and simulation results.

Studies On Extremal Segments In Random Sequences, Deniz Ertaş, Yacov Kantor Jan 1999

Studies On Extremal Segments In Random Sequences, Deniz Ertaş, Yacov Kantor

Turkish Journal of Physics

We review our main findings on the size distribution of the largest neutral segments in a sequence of N randomly charged monomers. Upon mapping to one--dimensional random walks (RWs), this corresponds to finding the probability distribution for the size L of the largest segment that returns to its starting position in an N--step RW. Using analytical, exact enumeration, and Monte Carlo methods, we reveal the complex structure of the probability distribution in the large N limit. In particular, the size of the longest neutral segment has a distribution with a square-root singularity at \ell\equiv L/N = 1, an essential singularity …

Orbital Period Modulation In Chromospherically Active Close Binaries, Cafer İbanoğlu Jan 1999

Orbital Period Modulation In Chromospherically Active Close Binaries, Cafer İbanoğlu

Turkish Journal of Physics

The orbital period changes in some chromospherically active close binaries have been interpreted as a consequence of magnetic activity. At least in two active close binaries a possible relationship between the orbital period modulation and activity cycle was suggested. The existence of a third companion in these binaries has also been proposed. The light-time effect which arises from orbiting around a third-body has been subtracted from all the O-C values and a cyclic change of the orbital period has been obtained. These cyclic changes seem to be connected with the total brightness variations at least in two samples, namely, V471 …

On The Global Stabilization Of Nonlinear Systems Via Switching Manifolds, Stephen P. Banks, Meti̇n U. Salamci, M. Kemal Özgören Jan 1999

On The Global Stabilization Of Nonlinear Systems Via Switching Manifolds, Stephen P. Banks, Meti̇n U. Salamci, M. Kemal Özgören

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The global stabilization of nonlinear systems is investigated by using switching surfaces. The nonlinear system is forced to a lower order switching manifold, which is designed to be stable by construction. Thus, the stability of the reduced-order system is guaranteed and parameter selection for the switching surface is avoided. The method is extended to a class of uncertain nonlinear systems and exemplified with some fictitious dynamic models.
