How The Supreme Court's Reiteration Of Sexual Harassment Standards Affirmed In Faragher And Ellerth Would Have Led To Jones' Survival In Jones V. Clinton, Moira Mcandrew
Cleveland State Law Review
This note demonstrates that a cognizable claim of sexual harassment may be predicated on a severe, yet isolated episode of sexual harassment. In this inquiry, we will look to other Supreme Court and Appellate Court decisions regarding sexual harassment law to support the conclusion that a single incident of sexual harassment can constitute an actionable hostile work environment claim. Part II traces the background of sexual harassment law, including what constitutes actionable discrimination and the applicable standards of a hostile work environment claim. Part III outlines the Supreme Court's analysis of actionable employment discrimination based on sexual harassment under Title …

The Effect Of A Student Orientation Program Upon Transfer Student Retention, And An Investigation Into The Causation Of And Potential Remedies For Transfer Student Attrition, Rebecca Norton Helm
Theses and Dissertations
This study focuses on the effect of orientation upon the retention of transfer students at a metropolitan university in the mid-south. The study was longitudinal in nature and utilized both a chi-square test to evaluate the difference in retention between transfer students who did and did not attend a new student orientation program, and a logistic regression to control for the effects of other well known influences of retention. The predictive model developed accurately identified 81.69% of persisters and nonpersisters. New student orientation, age, previous college GPA, and declaring a major were found to be significant predictors of retention; however …

Machiavelli And A Unified Theory Of Economic Parental Responsibility: A Proposed Statute, Dana E. Prescott
Machiavelli And A Unified Theory Of Economic Parental Responsibility: A Proposed Statute, Dana E. Prescott
St. Thomas Law Review
The evolution of a unified theory of economic parental responsibility derives from the coupling of modem dislocation of families and its material impact on children. Over the past three decades, the United States and much of Europe have struggled with the economic adjustments created by the dissolution of marriage as a matter of personal right rather than as an exception conferred by society. Divorce by itself, however, does not begin to define the boundaries of the adjustments, as serial relationships, remarriage and the non-marriage of parents create and compound economic uncertainty for children.

A Preliminary Analysis Of The Supply And Demand For Middle School Mathematics And Science Teachers In Virginia, J. A. Sigler
A Preliminary Analysis Of The Supply And Demand For Middle School Mathematics And Science Teachers In Virginia, J. A. Sigler
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Virginia Colleges and Universities have a major challenge to produce educated elementary and middle school students. The magnitude of this challenge can be measured by studying the number of current teachers in each grade in Virginia and the anticipated retirements and departures from the profession for other reasons. The new licensure requirements have their biggest impact for the preparation of middle school teachers since middle school teachers will no longer be able to receive general middle school certification.

Hands-On Physical Science Course At Radford University, T. Tanaka
Hands-On Physical Science Course At Radford University, T. Tanaka
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Most students in our introductory physical science course are elementary education majors. We are faced with several obstacles in teaching basic science to these students. For example, they lack interest in science, logical thinking, and necessary data gathering and analysis skills, among others. Many of those obstacles could be traced back to the science courses they had taken in the past. Those courses put more emphasis on memorizing scientific facts than understanding natural phenomena or experiencing scientific methods. As a result, the students tend to have a negative attitude toward science in general. In order to reverse this attitude, We …
Preparing Preservice Teachers For The Experimental Design And Data Analysis Sol's, J. E. Wright Jr.
Preparing Preservice Teachers For The Experimental Design And Data Analysis Sol's, J. E. Wright Jr.
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Many elementary teachers find teaching the science Standards of Learning (SOL) difficult [1, 2]. Some are even threatened by them. Of particular concern are the SOLs related to experimental design, handling data, and the scientific method. A possible reason for this discomfort is because many of these elementary teachers have had limited-to-no exposure to experimentation. As one of the activities included under a recent National Science Foundation Science Teachers Enhancement Project (STEP) grant awarded to Hampton University in conjunction with Virginia Union University and St. Paul's College, we included a teacher science fair competition. A special workbook/text was developed for …
