Information As Verb: Re-Conceptualizing Information For Cognitive And Ecological Models, David G. Casagrande Jan 1999

Information As Verb: Re-Conceptualizing Information For Cognitive And Ecological Models, David G. Casagrande

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Current notions of information are inadequate for ecological and cognitive models because they: 1) only account for information gain that results from reducing uncertainty; 2) assume binary logic; 3) fail to account for semantics and pragmatics; and 4) can not account for shared and externalized cognition. A different model of information is presented here, which treats information as a process of state change (i.e., the term is used as a verb), rather than as a variable. The potential for information is defined to include not only stimuli, but the context of the informational moment; and is distinguished from realized information, …

Evaluating Transit Market Potential And Selecting Locations Of Transit Service Facilities Using Gis, Srinivas S. Pulugurtha, Shashi S. Nambisan Jan 1999

Evaluating Transit Market Potential And Selecting Locations Of Transit Service Facilities Using Gis, Srinivas S. Pulugurtha, Shashi S. Nambisan

Journal of Public Transportation

Accessibility to transit service facility (TSF) locations plays a significant role in the success of public transportation systems. The ease with which the end-user can reach a TSF (e.g., bus stops, rail stations, or multimodal centers) plays prominently in the decision-making process of the individual. This article presents a working definition for transit market potential based on accessibility in terms of walking distance and walking time. Further, a measure is constructed to evaluate transit market potential for TSF locations for a transit system. The measure of transit potential is represented by an index value based on demographic criteria such as …

Is The Trips Agreement An Adequate Means To Deal With Unauthorized Copying Of Sound Recordings From The Internet?, Hege Sehested Zakariassen

LLM Theses and Essays

The Internet has expanded vastly in recent years, both in use and utility. It has become one of the most important means of distributors of information in our time. This increasing popularity has also led to "online fraud, theft, piracy, and infringement. The music industry is one of the branches that will experience upheaval in the next few years. The Internet might even change the way music is distributed. Experts believe that the Internet could alter the way music is distributed and undermine the physical distribution of sound recordings. Yet, on the other hand, the Internet could help unknown bands …

Direct Current Glow Discharges In Atmospheric Air, Robert H. Stark, Karl H. Schoenbach Jan 1999

Direct Current Glow Discharges In Atmospheric Air, Robert H. Stark, Karl H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

Direct current glow discharges have been operated in atmospheric air by using 100 μm microhollow cathode discharges as plasma cathodes. The glow discharges were operated at currents of up to 22 mA, corresponding to current densities of 3.8 A/cm2 and at average electric fields of 1.2 kV/cm. Electron densities in the glow are in the range from 1012 to 1013  cm−3. Varying the current of the microhollow cathode discharge allows us to control the current in the atmospheric pressure glow discharge. Large volume atmospheric pressure air plasmas can be generated by operating microhollow cathode discharges …
