Multivalued Mappings, Fixed-Point Theorems And Disjunctive Databases, Pascal Hitzler, Anthony K. Seda Jan 1999

Multivalued Mappings, Fixed-Point Theorems And Disjunctive Databases, Pascal Hitzler, Anthony K. Seda

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we discuss the semantics of disjunctive programs and databases and show how multivalued mappings and their fixed points arise naturally within this context. A number of fixed-point theorems for multivalued mappings are considered, some of which are already known and some of which are new. The notion of a normal derivative of a disjunctive program is introduced. Normal derivatives are normal logic programs which are determined by the disjunctive program. Thus, the well-known single-step operator associated with a normal derivative is single-valued, and its fixed points can be found by well-established means. It is shown how fixed …

Benchmarks And Standards For The Evaluation Of Parallel Job Schedulers, Steve J. Chapin, Walfredo Cirne, Dror G. Feitelson, James Patton Jones

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

The evaluation of parallel job schedulers hinges on the workloads used. It is suggested that this be standardized, in terms of both format and content, so as to ease the evaluation and comparison of different systems. The question remains whether this can encompass both traditional parallel systems and metacomputing systems. This paper is based on a panel on this subject that was held at the workshop, and the ensuing discussion; its authors are both the panel members and participants from the audience. Naturally, not all of us agree with all the opinions expressed here...

Webhla - An Interactive Multiplayer Environment For High Performance Distributed Modeling And Simulation, Geoffrey C. Fox, Wojtek Furmanski, Subhash Nair, Hasan T. Ozdemir, Zeynep Odcikin-Ozdemir, Tom A. Pulikal

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

The process of integrating DoD Modeling and Simulation paradigms around the new HLA/RTI standards proceeds in parallel with the onset of new Object Web standards for distributed objects and componentware, emergent at the crossroads of CORBA, DCOM, Java, and XML based distributed object technologies. We describe here our WebHLA approach which integrates both trends by offering Object Web based implementation of the HLA framework. WebHLA follows a three-tier architecture including: a) Web / Commodity based interactive simulation authoring and runtime front-ends given by Java applets or DirectX multiplayers; b) software bus in the middleware, given by Object Web RTI i.e. …

Ethical Perspectives And Practice Behaviors Involving Computer-Based Test Interpretation, Mark R. Mcminn, Brent M. Ellens, Erez Soref Jan 1999

Ethical Perspectives And Practice Behaviors Involving Computer-Based Test Interpretation, Mark R. Mcminn, Brent M. Ellens, Erez Soref

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

The debates of the 1980s regarding responsible use of computer-based test interpretation (CBTI) software have mostly disappeared, as CBTI use has become common practice. We surveyed 364 members of the Society for Personality Assessment to determine how they use CBTI software in their work and their perspectives on the ethics of using CBTI in various ways. Psychologists commonly use CBTI software for test scoring and to provide a complementary source of input for case formulations. Most do not use CBTI software as the primary way to formulate a case, nor as an alternative to a written report. Controversy and uncertainty …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

During cruise "La Bocaina 0497" a series of 14 tows with a commercial pelagic trawl at depths between 20 and 700 m and an acoustic survey with a SIMRAD EK-500 echosounder were carried out in neritic and adjacent oceanic waters off Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and Gran Canaria, Canary islands. In addition, SST images were obtained to get some informations on the prevailing hydrological conditions in the study area.

Of the 14 trawl tows ten were successful and resulted in capture of a total of 2166 fishes belonging to 81 species, 53 genera and 28 families. Ten species proved to be new …

Effects Of Magnetospheric Precipitation And Ionospheric Conductivity On The Ground Magnetic Signatures Of Traveling Convection Vortices, Lie Zhu, Robert W. Schunk, Jan Josef Sojka Jan 1999

Effects Of Magnetospheric Precipitation And Ionospheric Conductivity On The Ground Magnetic Signatures Of Traveling Convection Vortices, Lie Zhu, Robert W. Schunk, Jan Josef Sojka

All Physics Faculty Publications

By using an improved TCV model (Zhu et al., 1997), a quantitative study of the effects of magnetospheric precipitation and ionospheric background conductivity on the ground magnetic signatures of traveling convection vortices (TCVs) has been conducted. In this study the localized conductivity enhancement associated with the TCVs is present and the ratio of the Hall and Pedersen conductances vary both spatially and temporally according to the hardness of the TCV precipitation. It is found that a strong conductivity enhancement associated with hard TCV precipitation can significantly distort the TCV current closure in the ionosphere and lead to ground magnetic disturbance …

Null Geodesics In The Alcubierre Warp Drive Spacetime: The View From The Bridge, Chad Clark, William A. Hiscock, Shane L. Larson

All Physics Faculty Publications

The null geodesic equations in the Alcubierre warp-drive spacetime are numerically integrated to determine the angular deflection and redshift of photons which propagate through the distortion of the `warp-drive' bubble to reach an observer at the origin of the warp effect. We find that for a starship with an effective warp speed exceeding the speed of light, stars in the forward hemisphere will appear closer to the direction of motion than they would to an observer at rest. This aberration is qualitatively similar to that caused by special relativity. Behind the starship, a conical region forms from within which no …

Constructing A Portable Sundial, Michelle B. Larson Jan 1999

Constructing A Portable Sundial, Michelle B. Larson

All Physics Faculty Publications

Throughout history people have used shadows and sundials to measure the passage of time. This article describes how to construct a personal sundial that can be worn as a necklace or carried as a key chain. The activity is easily adaptable for grade levels elementary through high school. The instructions can be scaled for a schoolyard project. We’ve found sundial construction to be a terrific project that not only encourages students to investigate movement of the Sun in the sky, but also allows them to practice their math skills.

A Brain For Language And The Language Of The Brain, Guillermo A. Cecchi Jan 1999

A Brain For Language And The Language Of The Brain, Guillermo A. Cecchi

Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis consists of three sections. In the first one, we overview the basic concepts and results of computation theory, the relationship with formal language theory, and present an introduction to the possible applications to different biological systems. The second section deals with the role of noise in the transmission of information in neurons. We show that a key component of the dynamics of action potential generation in neurons, the rectification of ionic flow and negative incremental resistance to ionic gradient, can occur in Brownian transport in the environment of the cell by a purely entropic effect, i.e. driven by …

A Review Of The Anticoagulant Pesticide Pindone, Laurie E. Twigg, Tim J. Lowe, Gary R. Martin, Garry S. Gray

Books & book chapters

A review of the use of pindone for rabbit control in Western Australia is timely due to increased public concern over the use of this toxin, and because non-target deaths of some native Australian animals have been known to occur following its use. Pindone is one of the first generation indandione anticoagulant rodenticides which were developed in the late 1940' s. The toxicity of anticoagulants arises from their inhibition of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors in the blood. Thus therapeutic administration of vitamin K provides a reliable antidote against anticoagulant poisoning. Pindone is slow acting and works best with repeated small …

Integrating Children's Literature Into The Classroom Curriculum : A Thematic Inquiry Unit For Intermediate Grades, Kari Ann Weichle

Honors Capstones

The following project utilized children's literature to create lesson plans and activities that could be used to supplement an elementary curriculum, grades fourth through sixth. The purpose of the project was to develop lesson plans that integrated children's literature into the content areas and set the learning experiences in child centered, authentic contexts. Research has shown that children's literature can be used as an effective learning tool in the elementary classroom. This project uses children's literature to help teach many concepts that occur across an elementary curriculum. The focus of the lessons created center around the fourth through sixth grades, …

Assimilation In The Name Of Pluralism: Education, Law And Religion In Ontario, Canada, Ken Badley

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Draw a Venn diagram with three circles, one called law, one called religion and one called education. This chapter explores the overlap among these. The frrst half involves two clusters of questions. First, it asks what the questions, in fact, are, dealing first with issues concerning religion in publicly-funded schools. A second cluster of questions concerns those flashpoint issues of curriculum identified by religious parents and the independent religious schools some of them choose for their children. Throughout the chapter, I make reference to recent court cases involving religion and education in the Canadian province of Ontario, usually following those …

Sloan-Kennally Timber Sale Final Environmental Impact Statement, United States Forest Service

Final Environmental Impact Statements (ID)

This Final EIS documents three alternatives analyzed for the Sloan-Kennally Timber Sale. The sale is to be offered in 2000 and administered by the McCall Ranger District of the Payette National Forest. The Sloan-Kennally sale planning area is located approximately 15 miles southeast of McCall. Alternatives include No Action, the Proposed Action, and Alternative 3, no timber harvest in the roadless area. The preferred alternative is the proposed action, which would harvest timber on 571 acres using tractor and helicopter logging systems. The mixture of silvicultural treatments is designed to mimic historic timber stand structure consisting of scattered large trees …

The Role Of Surface Roughness For Implant Incorporation In Bone, A. Wennerberg Jan 1999

The Role Of Surface Roughness For Implant Incorporation In Bone, A. Wennerberg

Cells and Materials

A careful topographical characterization is important for reliable interpretation of the role of implant surface roughness in bone incorporation. In this paper, the currently available measuring instruments and evaluation techniques are described and discussed first, than literature on the role of surface roughness for cell and bone tissue reactions in vitro and, with special emphasis, the in vivo studies are reviewed. Finally, the results from a series of the authors own animal studies evaluating screw-shaped implants with different surface roughnesses are summarized. The results demonstrated firmer bone fixation for blasted implants than for turned ones. A blasted surface with an …

Chief Justice Holmes On The Science And Art (And Politics) Of Judging, David J. Seipp

Faculty Scholarship

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. (1841-1935), twenty-fifth Chief Justice of Massachusetts, needs no introduction to the readers of this journal. Son and namesake of one of America's most popular writers, he was at twenty-four a Civil War hero wounded three times in battle, and at forty a lawyer-scholar whose book of lectures The Common Law would win him international renown. At sixtyone he began three decades as the Great Dissenter on the U.S. Supreme Court, where he exposed the economic theory underpinning the dominant freedom-of-contract ideology. Between 1882 and 1902-between early promise and later fame-he served on the Supreme Judicial Court …
