Mitochondrial Dna Diversity And Population Structure Of Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion Nebulosus) In Coastal Waters Of The Southeastern United States, John R. Gold, Linda R. Richardson, Carol Furman Jan 1999

Mitochondrial Dna Diversity And Population Structure Of Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion Nebulosus) In Coastal Waters Of The Southeastern United States, John R. Gold, Linda R. Richardson, Carol Furman

Gulf of Mexico Science

Restriction-site variation in mitochondrial (mt)DNA was examined among 470 spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) sampled from eight localities in the northern Gulf of Mexico (Gulf) and two localities along the southeastern (Atlantic) coast of the United States. mtDNA fragment patterns generated 81 distinct mtDNA haplotypes (genotypes), three of which were found in 64% of the individuals assayed. Nucleotide sequence divergence among mtDNA haplotypes ranged from 0.148 to 1.808% and averaged (±SD) 0.676 ± 0.296%. Significant heterogeneity in mtDNA haplotype frequencies was detected between regions (i.e., Gulf vs Atlantic) and among sample localities from the northern Gulf. The latter appears …

Use Of Discriminant And Fourth-Derivative Analyses With High-Resolution Absorption Spectra For Phytoplankton Research: Limitations At Varied Signal-To-Noise Ratio And Spectral Resolution, D.L. Roelke, C.D. Kennedy, A.D. Weidemann Jan 1999

Weidemann

Gulf of Mexico Science

Future management efforts aimed at inhibiting harmful algal blooms will require extensive temporal and spatial monitoring of phytoplankton community composition. A cost-effective approach to delineating phytoplankton community composition may be through analysis of absorption spectra, measured in situ with instruments deployed on moorings or by remote sensing. Classification techniques relying on absorption spectra include discriminant and fourth-derivative analysis. We investigated how well these techniques performed theoretically at varied signal-to-noise ratio and spectral resolution representative of a new absorption and attenuation instrument called HiStar. Our findings suggest that discriminant analysis of absorption spectra is a highly useful technique for categorizing green …

Fluctuation Properties Of Precipitation. Part Iv: Finescale Clustering Of Drops In Variable Rain, A. R. Jameson, Alexander Kostinski, A Kruger Jan 1999

Fluctuation Properties Of Precipitation. Part Iv: Finescale Clustering Of Drops In Variable Rain, A. R. Jameson, Alexander Kostinski, A Kruger

Department of Physics Publications

In recent studies it is shown that in variable rain the spatial distribution of drops is not Poissonian. However, these past studies were limited to 1-min drop counts, which likely correspond to spatial scales of a few hundred to several hundreds of meters.

In this work results based on 1-s drop counts using a video disdrometer are reported. It is shown that the clustering of raindrops previously found during intervals of 1 min also occurs during 1 s as well in convective rain. These latter temporal scales likely correspond to spatial features having dimensions from only a few to tens …

Infinite-Dimensional Lie Algebras Of Generalized Block Type, J. Marshall Osborn, Kaiming Zhao Jan 1999

Infinite-Dimensional Lie Algebras Of Generalized Block Type, J. Marshall Osborn, Kaiming Zhao

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This paper investigates a class of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras over a field of characteristic 0 which are called here Lie algebras of generalized Block type, and which generalize a class of Lie algebras originally defined by Richard Block. Under certain natural restrictions, this class of Lie algebras is shown to break into five subclasses. One of these subclasses contains all generalized Cartan type K Lie algebras and some Lie algebras of generalized Cartan type H, and a second one is the class of Lie algebras type L, which were previously defined and studied elsewhere by the authors. The …

An Abductive Model Of Population Change, Milan Aiken Jan 1999

An Abductive Model Of Population Change, Milan Aiken

Journal of International Information Management

Logical abduction is a relatively unknown technique that may be used to classify or forecast. This paper describes abduction and applies it to a classification problem involving population change in the United States to test its accuracy. Results show that for this problem, it is as accurate as logistic regression, used in a prior study. Guidelines for using abduction are also presented.

Colby College Watershed Study: East and North Ponds (2011, 1999, 1996, 1991)

Human activity within the watershed can greatly accelerate the eutrophication process by increasing the rate at which nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen enter the lake (Fernandez et al. 1992). Increased nutrient loading causes dramatic increases in algal populations resulting in algal blooms. Many New England lakes develop a greenish tint because of algal blooms during early summer or early fall (Smith, 1992). Populations of bacteria which feed on organic material rise because of increased food supply. Bacterial activity decreases the level of dissolved oxygen in the lake (Henderson-Seller and Markland, 1987). This process has occurred in East Pond and …
