He I 2.06 Micron Emission From Nebulae, Gary J. Ferland Feb 1999

He I 2.06 Micron Emission From Nebulae, Gary J. Ferland

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The spectrum emitted by any astronomical plasma is sensitive to a variety of details, some of which may not be obviously important. This paper describes the sensitivity of the He I 2.06 μm line to the gas opacity at ionizing energies. The intensity of the line relative to a hydrogen line depends on the He+/H+ ratio, but also on the ratio of continuous to He I Lyα line opacity, since this determines whether the Lyα line can scatter often enough to be converted to the 2.06 μm line. The intensity of the infrared line relative to Hβ …

Univercity News (1999-02-08)

UniverCity News, 1998-2001

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Effects On Students Of A 4x4 Junior High School Block Scheduling Program, R. Brian Cobb, Stacey Abate, Dennis Baker

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

The effects of a 4 X 4 block scheduling program in a middle school on a variety of student measures were investigated. These measures included standardized achievement tests in mathematics, reading, and writing, cumulative and semester grades in middle school and high school, attendance rates, and enrollment rates in advanced high school courses (in mathematics only). The block scheduling program had been in effect for four years allowing analyses of current middle and high school students who had experienced a minimum of one and one-half years of block scheduling while in middle school. The primary research design was a post-test …

Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, Douglas R. Hofstadter Feb 1999

Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, Douglas R. Hofstadter

Books

Douglas Hofstadter's book is concerned directly with the nature of "maps" or links between formal systems. However, according to Hofstadter, the formal system that underlies all mental activity transcends the system that supports it. If life can grow out of the formal chemical substrate of the cell, if consciousness can emerge out of a formal system of firing neurons, then so too will computers attain human intelligence. Gödel, Escher, Bach is a wonderful exploration of fascinating ideas at the heart of cognitive science: meaning, reduction, recursion, and much more.

Conditional Generalized Analytic Feynman Integrals And A Generalized Integral Equation, Seung Jun Change, Soon Ja Kang, David Skoug

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

We use a generalized Brownian motion process to define a generalized Feynman integral and a conditional generalized Feynman integral. We then establish the existence of these integrals for various functionals. Finally we use the conditional generalized Feynman integral to derive a Schrödinger integral equation.
