Muyltivariate And Regression Analysis Based On The Geometry Of Data Clouds., Biman Chakraborty Dr. Feb 1999

Muyltivariate And Regression Analysis Based On The Geometry Of Data Clouds., Biman Chakraborty Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Median is a natural estimate of location of a data set, and there are several versions of inultivariate median studied in the literature, each of which is an interesting descriptive statistic for multivariate data and provides some nice geometric insights into the data cloud. One would expect that multidimensional median will be a natural estimate for the center of symmetry of a multivariate distribution. However, there is no unique concept of symmetry in multivariate problems. The center of symmetry can be defined in several ways there. For example, the d-dimensional random variable X is spherically symmetric about e €Rd if …

A Dynamical Study Of The Non-Star-Forming Translucent Molecular Cloud Mbm 16: Evidence For Shear-Driven Turbulence In The Interstellar Medium, Ted La Rosa, Steven N. Shore, Loris Magnani

Faculty Articles

We present the results of a velocity correlation study of the high-latitude cloud MBM 16 using a fully sampled 12CO map, supplemented by new 13CO data. We find a correlation length of 0.4 pc. This is similar in size to the formaldehyde clumps described in our previous study. We associate this correlated motion with coherent structures within the turbulent flow. Such structures are generated by free shear flows. Their presence in this non-star-forming cloud indicates that kinetic energy is being supplied to the internal turbulence by an external shear flow. Such large-scale driving over long times is a possible solution …

Mission As An Organizing Principle, C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

Speaking to both The Conference Board and the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management, Pollard addresses the topic of corporate mission, arguing that one can envision a meaningful relationship between work and the rest of life only when an organization's leaders are focused on serving employees.

The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 1999-02-18, Wooster Voice Editors

The Voice: 1991-2000

The Kappa Chi charter has been permanently disbanded. The City Council has voted to spend $400,000 to improve local parks and recreation areas. The Campus Council is still having an ongoing debate about the alcohol regulations on campus, and how they should change for the better. A Wooster segment of PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends, of Lesbians and Gays) has been created. Page four has the column 'Speaking of...' which includes the complaint about the lack of soap, hand dryers, and condoms at the school. The letters to the editor are also on the fourth page. Two writers reviewed the …

Effects Of Above-Ground Biomass Allocation On Soil Nitrogen Demand And Below-Ground Productivity: The Influence Of Stand Density, Christopher Dicus, Thomas J. Dean

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Two stands in a loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantation were established in southeastern Louisiana in 1981 at three initial planting densities (1.2 x 1.2m, 2.4 m., and 3.6 x 3.6m). Height, height to the base of the live crown, and DBH measurements taken in consecutive years, coupled with allometric equations, yielded estimates of annual stand level foliage, branchwood, and stemwood biomass increment in each plot. Stemwood, branchwood, first-year foliage, second year foliage, and litter tissues were obtained in each plot and analyzed for nitrogen concentration, and were used to provide estimates of annual foliar nitrogen retranslocation and above-ground …

Thermodynamic Expansion Of Nucleation Free-Energy Barrier And Size Of Critical Nucleus Near The Vapor-Liquid Coexistence, Kenichiro Koga, Xiao Cheng Zeng Feb 1999

Thermodynamic Expansion Of Nucleation Free-Energy Barrier And Size Of Critical Nucleus Near The Vapor-Liquid Coexistence, Kenichiro Koga, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Nucleation free-energy barrier height and size of the critical nucleus are expanded in powers of the chemical potential difference between the supersaturated vapor (or expanded liquid) in the metastable state and the saturated vapor-liquid system in the stable equilibrium state at the same temperature. The coefficients in the expansions are expressed in terms of the thermodynamic properties at the stable equilibrium state. Comparisons with the results obtained from the density-functional calculation for nucleation of the Lennard–Jones fluid show that systematic improvement in predicting properties of the critical nucleus, either liquid droplet or vapor cavity, is achieved by adding the higher …
