Optimal Power Allocation In Cdma Forward Link Using Dependency Between Pilot And Traffic Channels, Seung Jong Park, Dongwoo Kim, Chang Yeon Kim Dec 1999

Optimal Power Allocation In Cdma Forward Link Using Dependency Between Pilot And Traffic Channels, Seung Jong Park, Dongwoo Kim, Chang Yeon Kim

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper shows a new method for minimizing the transmit power on CDMA forward link channels. Different from previous works, the proposed method uses the dependency that exists between the respective signal qualities of the pilot channel and traffic channels. Since present CDMA forward link exploits coherent demodulation with continuously transmitting pilot signals, the stronger the pilot channel is, the less traffic power may be required while the same transmission quality is maintained. With laboratory tests, the dependency is graphed. And then an optimal pilot signal quality is found, which minimizes the total transmit power. Considering various mobile environments, -10 …

The Window Distribution Of Multiple Tcps With Random Loss Queues, Archan Misra, Teunis Ott, John Baras Dec 1999

The Window Distribution Of Multiple Tcps With Random Loss Queues, Archan Misra, Teunis Ott, John Baras

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Two approximate techniques for analyzing the window size distribution of TCP flows sharing a RED-like bottleneck queue are presented. Both methods presented first use a fixed point algorithm to obtain the mean window sizes of the flows, and the mean queue length in the bottleneck buffer. The simpler of the two methods then uses the ‘square root formula’ for TCP; the other method is more complicated. More often than not, the simpler method is slightly more accurate; this is probably due to the fact that window sizes of the different flows are negatively correlated.

Dielectric Plug-Loaded Two-Port Transmission Line Measurement Technique For Dielectric Property Characterization Of Granular And Liquid Materials, K. Mubarak, R. Zoughi, Aaron D. Benally, Karl Joseph Bois, Larry F. Handjojo Dec 1999

Dielectric Plug-Loaded Two-Port Transmission Line Measurement Technique For Dielectric Property Characterization Of Granular And Liquid Materials, K. Mubarak, R. Zoughi, Aaron D. Benally, Karl Joseph Bois, Larry F. Handjojo

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

There are numerous dielectric property characterization techniques available in the microwave regime each with its own uniqueness, advantages and disadvantages. The two-port completely-filled waveguide (transmission line) technique is a robust measurement approach which is well suited for solid dielectric materials. In this case, the dielectric material can be relatively easily machined to fit inside the waveguide and the subsequent measurement of the scattering parameters of this two-port device renders the dielectric properties of the material filling the waveguide. However, this technique is not well suited for measuring the dielectric properties of granular and liquid materials. These materials are used in …

A Numerical Simulation Of A Carbon Black Suspension Cell Via A Time-Reversed, Double Layer Compute Algorithm, Gregg T. Anderson Dec 1999

A Numerical Simulation Of A Carbon Black Suspension Cell Via A Time-Reversed, Double Layer Compute Algorithm, Gregg T. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

A numerical simulation of a carbon black suspension cell is explored which models a laser-induced plasma within a liquid ethanol medium of approximately 1 mm thickness. The simulation model assumes a laser pulse with a pulse width of approximately 9 nsecs propagating in the left-to-right direction striking the front surface of the medium and focusing to a spot within the liquid volume. When the energy density within a given irradiated volume is sufficiently high, it ignites the carbon particles and generates a large number of free electrons, i.e., a plasma. The plasma couples with the in-coming laser energy on a …

Electrical And Optical Characterization Of Intrinsic And Ion-Implantation Induced Defects In 6h- And 4h-Sic, Michael B. Scott Dec 1999

Electrical And Optical Characterization Of Intrinsic And Ion-Implantation Induced Defects In 6h- And 4h-Sic, Michael B. Scott

Theses and Dissertations

Deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS), Hall effect, and cathodolummescence (CL) measurements are used to characterize the intrinsic and ion-implantation induced defects in high-temperature (475 and 500 °C) ion-implanted epitaxial n-type 6H- and 4H-SiC, ion-implanted with Cr, Mg, Ar, N, and P atoms. Comparison of room-temperature and high-temperature ion-implanted 6H-SiC:Mg and :Cr indicate the significance of high-temperature ion implantation on the activation of the ion-implanted atoms and damage-recovery of the crystalline lattice. The effects of high-temperature annealing on both damage-recovery and implanted ion activation are detected and analyzed, from 1200 to 1800 °C. Trap parameters of both damage-related and species-related defects …

Reverse Engineering Of Foreign Missiles Via Genetic Algorithm, Jon D. Wollam Dec 1999

Reverse Engineering Of Foreign Missiles Via Genetic Algorithm, Jon D. Wollam

Theses and Dissertations

One mission of the National Air Intelligence Center (NAIC) is the reverse engineering of foreign missile weapon systems from incomplete observational data. In the past, intuition and repeated runs of a missile performance model were required to converge to a solution compatible with observed flight characteristics. This approach can be cumbersome and time consuming, as well as being subject to undesirable influences from the analyst's preconceptions and biases. An alternative approach has been created to apply genetic algorithm (GA) techniques to allow automation of the process, wider exploration of the design space, and more optimal solutions matching the observational data. …

Implementation Of Speech Recognition Software For Text Processing: An Exploratory Analysis, Sean P. Abell Dec 1999

Implementation Of Speech Recognition Software For Text Processing: An Exploratory Analysis, Sean P. Abell

Theses and Dissertations

The rationale behind implementing new information technologies is often to gain productivity improvements associated with the substitution of machinery for labor. However, the literature shows little direct evidence of a positive relationship between information technology investment and subsequent productivity benefits. This thesis reports on the examination into the productivity implications of implementing speech recognition software in a text processing environment. More specifically, research was conducted to compare text processing speeds and error rates using speech recognition software versus the keyboard and mouse. Of interest was the time required to input and proofread text processing tasks as well as the number …

Towards A Game Theory Model Of Information Warfare, David A. Burke Dec 1999

Towards A Game Theory Model Of Information Warfare, David A. Burke

Theses and Dissertations

The repeated game of incomplete information model, a subclass of game theory models, was modified to include aspects of information warfare. The repeated game of incomplete information model was first developed to analyze nuclear weapons disarmament negotiations. The central role of information in this model suggested its applicability to IW, which focuses on the defense and acquisition of information. A randomized experimental design was utilized to determine how people behave in a laboratory IW setting and to test the IW game model's basic predictions. The impact of experience and learning on IW performance was also assessed during the experiment. IW …

Finite element analysis was used to study the relationship between the stress state created by the plastic damage …

Application Of The Interaction Picture To Reactive Scattering In One Dimension, Michael J. Maclachlan Dec 1999

Application Of The Interaction Picture To Reactive Scattering In One Dimension, Michael J. Maclachlan

Theses and Dissertations

The interaction picture is used together with the channel-packet method in a new time-dependent approach to compute reactive scattering matrix elements. The channelpacket method enables the use of the interaction picture for computing reactive S-matrix elements by splitting the computational effort into two parts. First, asymptotic reactant and product wavepackets are individually propagated into the interaction region of the potential to form Moller states. The interaction picture, in contrast to the usual Schrödinger picture of quantum mechanics, is so constructed that a wavefunction that experiences no change in potential (that is, a free-particle wavefunction) remains always fixed, with no translation …

A Comparison Of Training Algorithms For Dhp Adaptive Critic Neuro-Control, George G. Lendaris, Thaddeus T. Shannon, Andres Rustan Dec 1999

A Comparison Of Training Algorithms For Dhp Adaptive Critic Neuro-Control, George G. Lendaris, Thaddeus T. Shannon, Andres Rustan

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

A variety of alternate training strategies for implementing the Dual Heuristic Programming (DHP) method of approximate dynamic programming in the neuro-control context are explored. The DHP method of controller training has been successfully demonstrated by a number of authors on a variety of control problems in recent years, but no unified view of the implementation details of the method has yet emerged. A number of options are here described for sequencing the training of the Controller and Critic networks in DHP implementations. Results are given about their relative efficiency and the quality of the resulting controllers for two benchmark control …

Work In Progress: Automating Proportion/Period Scheduling, David Steere, Jonathan Walpole, Calton Pu Dec 1999

Work In Progress: Automating Proportion/Period Scheduling, David Steere, Jonathan Walpole, Calton Pu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The recent effort to define middleware capable of supporting real-time applications creates the opportunity to raise the level of abstraction presented to the programmer. We propose that proportion/period is a better abstraction for specifying resource needs and allocation than priorities. We are currently investigating techniques to address some issues that are restricting use of proportion/period scheduling to research real-time prototypes. In particular, we are investigating techniques to automate the task of selecting proportion and period, and that allow proportion/period to incorporate job importance under overload conditions.

Interior-Point Methods And Modern Optimization Codes, Goran Lesaja

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

During the last fifteen years we have witnessed an explosive development in the area of optimization theory due to the introduction and development of interior-point methods. This development has quickly led to the development of new and more efficient optimization codes. In this paper, the basic elements of interior-point methods for linear programming will be discussed as well as extensions to convex programming, complementary problems, and semidefinite programming. Interior-point methods are polynomial and effective algorithms based on Newton 's method. Since they have been introduced, the classical distinction between linear programming methods, based on the simplex algorithm, and those methods …

We report the discovery of a compressibility phase transition at 160 K in crystalline copolymer films of vinylidene fluoride ( 70%) with trifluoroethylene ( 30%). This phase transition is distinct from the known bulk ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition at 353 K and surface ferroelectric phase transition at 295 K. The new phase transition is characterized by an increase in the effective Debye temperature from 48 to 245 K along the 〈010〉 direction as the temperature falls below 160 K. This phase transition is evident in neutron scattering, x-ray diffraction, angle-resolved photoemission, and in the dipole active phonon modes in electron energy-loss …

Pushpush Is Np-Hard In 3d, Joseph O'Rourke, The Smith Problem Solving Group Nov 1999

Pushpush Is Np-Hard In 3d, Joseph O'Rourke, The Smith Problem Solving Group

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We prove that a particular pushing-blocks puzzle is intractable in 3D. The puzzle, inspired by the game PushPush, consists of unit square blocks on an integer lattice. An agent may push blocks (but never pull them) in attempting to move between given start and goal positions. In the PushPush version, the agent can only push one block at a time, and moreover, each block, when pushed, slides the maximal extent of its free range. We prove this version is NP-hard in 3D by reduction from SAT. The corresponding problem in 2D remains open.

Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopic Study Of Scn- Adsorbed At The Copper And Gold Nanowire Arrays, Jian-Lin Yao, Guo-Ping Pan, Kuan-Hong Xue, Yong Xie, Jing Tang, Bin Ren, Dong-Mei Sun, Bing-Wei Mao, Zhong-Qun Tian

Journal of Electrochemistry

Two-dimensional arrays of Cu and Au nanowires have been fabricated by template synthesis method, using the anodic aluminum oxidation films as the template. The morphology of the nanowire array was monitored by atomic force microscope (AFM) in the dissolution processes of the alumina film. Based on the probe molecule strategy, the spectral feature of SCN- adsorbed at the Cu and Au nanowires with different diameters has been investigated by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The results reveal that the intensity of the SERS bands depends on the length of the exposed nanowires. The C≡N stretching vibration frequency (νCN …

Electro-Oxidation Of Phenol On Sno2/Ti Electrodes Prepared By Thermal Oxidation, Qing-Song Zhang, Hui-Huang Wu

Journal of Electrochemistry

A SnO2/Ti electrode prepared by thermal oxidation was used as the anode for galvanostatic electrolysis in acidic solution containing phenol, the time-dependances of phenol concentration, chemical oxygen demand in solution(COD) and instantaneous current efficiency were determined during electrolysis. The results show that with the SnO2/Ti anode instead of Pt, the COD significantly decreases at the same charge passage, and average current efficiency of oxidation increases by three times. The mechanism for phenol oxidation at two electrodes was discussed.
