Collaborative Decision-Support And The Human-Machine Relationship, Jens G. Pohl Apr 1999

Collaborative Decision-Support And The Human-Machine Relationship, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

Human beings are inquisitive creatures who seek explanations for all that they observe and experience in their living environment. While this quest for understanding is central to our success in adapting to a changing environment, it is also a major cause of our willingness to accept partial understandings and superficial explanations when the degree of complexity of the problem situation confounds our current cognitive capabilities. In other words, a superficial or partial explanation is considered better than no explanation at all. As flawed as this approach may be, it has helped us to solve difficult problems in stages. By first …

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although there are many chlorine-containing trace gases in the atmosphere, only those with atmospheric lifetimes of 2 years or fewer appear to have significant natural sources. The most abundant of these gases are methyl chloride, chloroform, dichloromethane, perchloroethylene, and trichloroethylene. Methyl chloride represents about 540 parts per trillion by volume (pptv) Cl, while the others together amount to about 120 pptv Cl. For methyl chloride and chloroform, both oceanic and land-based natural emissions have been identified. For the other gases, there is evidence of oceanic emissions, but the roles of the soils and land are not known and have not …

The Gender Pay Differential: Choice, Tradition, Or Overt Discrimination?, Jaynanne Calaway '99 Apr 1999

The Gender Pay Differential: Choice, Tradition, Or Overt Discrimination?, Jaynanne Calaway '99

Honors Projects

No one disputes that a male-female gender wage differential favoring men exists. This study seeks to unearth not only the sources of this differential but also the relative degrees to which the various sources impact the differential. The theories proposed by current literature suggest three principal causes: differences in human capital, crowding discrimination, and other forms of discrimination. This study estimates separate equations for men and women and then uses the regression results to decompose the gender wage differential into the three aforementioned components. We find, after isolating the effects of differences in individual human capital and choice characteristics as …

Use Of Feedforward Neural Networks For Machine Vision Calibration, Mark B. Lynch, Cihan H. Dagli, Mahesh Vallenki Apr 1999

Use Of Feedforward Neural Networks For Machine Vision Calibration, Mark B. Lynch, Cihan H. Dagli, Mahesh Vallenki

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Machine vision calibration is an important step to obtaining usable measurements in inspection and automation operations. Conventional calibration techniques require the development of elaborate mathematical models and have prior knowledge of many parameters. Creating a suitable model and obtaining reasonable values for some calibration parameters is often difficult and error prone. In this article, a neural network approach is presented as an indirect non-linear optimization method to machine vision calibration. This approach does not require a mathematical model be developed nor any prior knowledge about the setup or calibration parameters. A universal calibration approach is developed and utilized in various …

Search For Third-Generation Leptoquarks From Technicolor Models In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.8 Tev, F. Abe, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration Apr 1999

Search For Third-Generation Leptoquarks From Technicolor Models In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.8 Tev, F. Abe, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report the results of a search for technicolor using 110 pb-1 of pp̅ collisions recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). In technicolor models containing a technifamily, color-octet technirhos enhance the pair production of color-triplet technipions, which behave as third-generation leptoquarks. From our previously reported search for third-generation leptoquarks, we present constraints on the production of color-triplet technipions and color-octet technirhos as a function of their masses.

Molecular Systematics And Biogeography Of Long-Tailed Shrews (Insectivora: Sorex) And Northern Flying Squirrels (Rodentia: Glaucomys), John Richard Demboski Apr 1999

Molecular Systematics And Biogeography Of Long-Tailed Shrews (Insectivora: Sorex) And Northern Flying Squirrels (Rodentia: Glaucomys), John Richard Demboski

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Insight into phylogenetic and biogeographic relationships among several mammalian taxa in western North America was provided with DNA sequences of two mitochondrial genes (cytochrome b and ND4). Members of two species complexes of long-tailed shrews (genus Sorex ) and northern flying squirrels (genus Glaucomys) were examined, and a common theme of responses to past climate change and glacial cycles was evident. Diversification events indicated by the DNA sequences provide new perspectives regarding the deep and shallow history of these taxa. Analysis of seven species of the Sorex cinereus complex (and related species) revealed two major clades within the complex, Northern …

New Instrumentation For The Detection Of Sulfur Dioxide In The Remote Atmosphere, Dennis Keith Nicks Apr 1999

New Instrumentation For The Detection Of Sulfur Dioxide In The Remote Atmosphere, Dennis Keith Nicks

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Sulfur gases are an important chemical component of the atmosphere. Gaseous sulfur compounds effect the acidity of rainwater and are important precursors to aerosol particles which affect public health, climate and visibility of scenic vistas such as the Grand Canyon. Sulfate aerosols are also known to participate in ozone catalysis in the stratosphere. A vast majority of the gaseous sulfur cycling through the atmosphere will exist as sulfur dioxide (SO2) at some time during its atmospheric lifetime. Since SO 2 is a primary component of the atmospheric sulfur cycle, quality measurements of this gas are important to understanding the cycling …

Institutional Structure And The Optimal Level Of Lying, Rodney F. Hiser Apr 1999

Institutional Structure And The Optimal Level Of Lying, Rodney F. Hiser

Economics

This study is an interdisciplinary comparative analysis of two institutional structures and their relation to lying. The author examines institutional structure through an institutional continuum with contrasting ideal-types at opposing ends. These ideal-types are the "private property order" and the "bureau." The author models lying as a benefit-cost analysis and examines lying through a two-person model of society called the "information relation." Using the information relation, he shows the problem of lying is an agency problem between the informer and the informee. In two separate analyses, the author evaluates the ideal-types' tendencies to either allow or hinder lying. In the …

Till Deformation Beneath Black Rapids Glacier, Alaska, And Its Implication On Glacier Motion, Martin Truffer Apr 1999

Till Deformation Beneath Black Rapids Glacier, Alaska, And Its Implication On Glacier Motion, Martin Truffer

Theses (Unassigned)

The motion of a glacier is largely determined by the nature of its bed. The basal morphology and its reaction to the overlying ice mass have been subject to much speculation, because the glacier bed is usually difficult to access, and good field data are sparse. In spring 1997 a commercial wireline drill rig was set up on Black Rapids Glacier, Alaska, to extract cores of basal ice, subglacial till, and underlying bedrock. One of the boreholes was equipped with three tiltmeters to monitor till deformation, and a piezometer to record pore water pressure. The surface velocity and ice deformation …

Geology And Timing Of Zinc-Lead-Silver Mineralization, Northern Brooks Range, Alaska, Melanie Beth Werdon Apr 1999

Geology And Timing Of Zinc-Lead-Silver Mineralization, Northern Brooks Range, Alaska, Melanie Beth Werdon

Theses (Unassigned)

The north-central and northwestern Brooks Range of Alaska hosts widespread Carboniferous Zn-Pb-Ag +/- Ba shale-hosted massive sulfide (Sedex) deposits, and Zn-Pb-Ag +/- Cu vein-breccia and disseminated sulfide occurrences. The Sedex deposits are hosted by black carbonaceous shale and siliceous mudstone of the Mississippian to Pennsylvanian Kuna Formation and are spatially associated with minor (e.g. Red Dog) to locally abundant (e.g. Drenchwater) volcanic and hypabyssal intrusive rocks. The vein-breccia and disseminated sulfide occurrences show no obvious igneous association and are hosted by a deformed but only weakly metamorphosed package of Upper Devonian to Lower Mississippian mixed continental and marine elastic rocks …

Modeling Of Arctic Stratus Cloud Formation And The Maintenance Of The Cloudy Arctic Boundary Layer, Qiuqing Zhang Apr 1999

Modeling Of Arctic Stratus Cloud Formation And The Maintenance Of The Cloudy Arctic Boundary Layer, Qiuqing Zhang

Theses (Unassigned)

The formation of Arctic stratus clouds (ASCs) and the maintenance of the cloudy Arctic boundary layer are studied with two models: a one-dimensional radiative-convective model and a three-dimensional large eddy simulation (LES) model. The one-dimensional radiative-convective model consists of a comprehensive radiative module, a cloud parameterization with detailed microphysics and a convective adjustment scheme. The model is designed specifically for studying ASC formation. With this model, the roles of radiation and cloud microphysics in the formation of ASCs and multiple cloud layers are investigated. The simulations reproduce both single and multiple cloud layers that were observed with inversions of temperature …

Kids Count Alaska 1998-1999, Norman Dinges, Claudia Lampman, Shawna Ragan Apr 1999

Kids Count Alaska 1998-1999, Norman Dinges, Claudia Lampman, Shawna Ragan

ISER Reports

How are Alaska’s children doing at the end of the twentieth century? Many are doing just fine—growing up healthy and safe. But others are not so fortunate. They live in poverty; they grow up without their fathers; they drop out of school; they have babies when they are children themselves. Too many—and even one is too many—die accidentally or intentionally. To help Alaska’s children, policymakers and others need reliable information about conditions affecting children. In the past decade or so, scientists have discovered that babies are born with the raw materials for brain development—about 100 million brain cells—but that most …

Fatigue Behavior Of Conventional And Rubberized Asphalt Mixes, Stephan K. Saboundjian Apr 1999

Fatigue Behavior Of Conventional And Rubberized Asphalt Mixes, Stephan K. Saboundjian

Engineering

One of the main distress modes of flexible pavements is the fatigue cracking of the asphalt concrete surface layer. The addition of crumb-rubber modifier (CRM), obtained from scrap tires, to asphalt-aggregate mixtures has shown promise in enhancing their fatigue behavior. In this study, conventional unmodified and CRM modified asphalt-aggregate mixtures are evaluated in terms of their fatigue behavior. Controlled-strain flexural beam fatigue tests are conducted in the laboratory over a wide range of temperatures. Experimental results are compared in terms of flexural, tensile and compressive stiffnesses, phase angle, fatigue life and cumulative dissipated energy. Results showed that CRM mixes are …

Foraging Ecology And Conservation Biology Of African Elephants: Ecological And Evolutionary Perspectives On Elephant-Woody Plant Interactions In African Landscapes, Joseph Paine Dudley Apr 1999

Foraging Ecology And Conservation Biology Of African Elephants: Ecological And Evolutionary Perspectives On Elephant-Woody Plant Interactions In African Landscapes, Joseph Paine Dudley

Biological Sciences

The available scientific evidence indicates that African forest elephants and bush elephants are ecologically and evolutionarily distinct taxa. The current practice of regarding these two taxa as ecotypes of a single species, Loxodonta africana (i.e., L. a. africana Blumenbach 1797, L. a. cyclotis Matschie 1900) appears unwarranted, and obscures issues of major significance to the conservation biology of African elephants. Under a proposed taxonomic revision, the African bush elephant retains the designation Loxodonta africana Blumenbach 1797 while the African forest elephant is recognized as Loxodonta cyclotis Noack 1906. The browsing of woody plants by African bush elephants is a major …

Blood Organochlorines, Immune Function And Health Of Free-Ranging Northern Fur Seal Pups (Callorhinus Ursinus), Kimberlee Beth Beckmen Apr 1999

Blood Organochlorines, Immune Function And Health Of Free-Ranging Northern Fur Seal Pups (Callorhinus Ursinus), Kimberlee Beth Beckmen

Biological Sciences

This study examined organochlorine (OC) contaminant levels in blood and milk along with immune function and health of northern fur seals ( Callorhinus ursinus) from St. George Island, Alaska. This portion of the Pribilof Islands breeding stock has undergone a long-term decline between 4 and 6% per year for unknown reasons. To examine the possible role of neonatal OC exposure on health, two cohorts of pups (69 total) and 33 matched periparturient dams were captured for blood and milk sample collection. From the second cohort of 49 neonates, 43 were re-sampled 29 to 51 days later. OCs were extracted from …
