We present experimental and theoretical findings on the geometry of polycrystalline para hexaphenyl via Raman scattering. The planarity of the molecule is affected by hydrostatic pressure and temperature. Our studies indicate that the potential energy curve which governs the torsional motion between neighboring phenyl rings is "W" shaped. We determine the activation energy to promote the molecule from a nonplanar to a planar state to be 0.04 eV, in good agreement with our quantum chemical calculations. From the relative intensities of the 1280cm-1 to the 1220cm-1 Raman modes we show that high pressure planarizes the molecules, modifying the …

Production of low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) has created a need for safe storage facilities. These facilities must be capable of isolating radioactive waste and preventing contamination from physical or biological intrusion until the waste material is isotopically stable. At the present time, managers of the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) have a substantial database characterizing rainfall events and the subsequent impact on integrity of shallow land burial sites used for storage of LLRW. Little information has been gathered describing the processes of snow accumulation/ablation and the resulting impact on storage facilities. This study examines snowmelt runoff, infiltration, and …

Full-Scale Operation Of A Tubular Ultrafiltration System In The Treatment Of Oily Waste, Michael Christopher Malak
Full-Scale Operation Of A Tubular Ultrafiltration System In The Treatment Of Oily Waste, Michael Christopher Malak
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
An aluminum company in West Virginia uses an oil-water (metal working fluid) in their rolling mill process for lubrication. In the past, the company collected the oily-waste into two lined waste ponds with a combined holding capacity of 5 million gallons. Separation of the oil-water mixture occurred as emulsifiers in the metal working fluid broke down. Free oil was skimmed resulting in a pond effluent, which contained 0.2 to 1.0% oil. Pond effluent was sprayed on a treatment field and the remaining oil was degraded naturally. The daily flow to the spray fields averaged 80,000 gallons. In 1993, concerns about …
Tropisetron Inhibits Neurogenic (Stress-Induced) Hypertension But Not Genetic Hypertension, Deanna L. Sockwell
Tropisetron Inhibits Neurogenic (Stress-Induced) Hypertension But Not Genetic Hypertension, Deanna L. Sockwell
Theses (Pre-2016)
Synaptic plasticity in the form of long-term potentiation (LTP) exists in sympathetic ganglia. This project examines the possibility that in sympathetic ganglia which regulate and control blood pressure, LTP may be involved in the expression of some forms of hypertension. Long lasting enhancement of the basal tone of ganglionic transmission ( as with LTP) results in sustained constriction of blood vessels which leads to elevated blood pressure. Results from this laboratory presented compelling evidence that LTP in the superior cervical ganglion is dependent on activation of serotonin 5-HT3 receptors. Long lasting (hours) LTP in sympathetic ganglia is induced by subjecting …

Server Selection For Mobile Agent Migration, Wayne Caro
Server Selection For Mobile Agent Migration, Wayne Caro
Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to develop, test, and simulate an algorithm that mobile software agents can use to select a server to which the agents can migrate. Software agents are autonomous software entities that perform tasks on behalf of other agents or humans, and that have some degree of intelligence. In particular, a mobile software agent is capable of migrating from one computer system (agent server) to another during the course of performing its tasks. Most current implementations of mobile software agents (simply referred to as agents) have simple forms of server selection. The algorithm discussed in this …

Vauchez et al. [this issue] (hereinafter refered to as VBN) interpret the petrologic, tomographic, and anisotropy data from continental rifts to support a model of continental rifting [Nicolas, 1993; Nicolas et al., 1994] in which the lithosphere splits along the rift axis and asthenosphere flows in from the sides to fill the resulting gap. We suggest here that the data can also be described by a model in which the lower lithosphere is modified or eroded by active mantle upwelling over a region of significantly greater dimensions than the rift graben and that partial melt developing in the upwelling …
A Worst-Case Analysis Of Direct-Sequence Spread-Spectrum In Multipath Channels, Murad Hizlan, Xuedong Liu
A Worst-Case Analysis Of Direct-Sequence Spread-Spectrum In Multipath Channels, Murad Hizlan, Xuedong Liu
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
We consider a direct-sequence spread-spectrum system operating in an indoors environment in the presence of multiaccess and multipath interference, and additive white Gaussian noise. We focus on the worst-case bit error probability of this system with a constraint on signal-to-interference ratio, and derive a Chernoff-type upper bound on this error probability. We evaluate the upper bound for a special case in order to gain understanding of the basic worst-case performance. We also compare the effects of the worst-case multipath interference with those of the worst-case multiuser interference of …

Shopping For Judges: An Empirical Analysis Of Venue Choice In Large Chapter 11 Reorganizations, Theodore Eisenberg, Lynn M. Lopucki
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
For almost two decades, an embarrassing pattern of forum shopping has been developing in the highly visible world of big-case bankruptcy reorganization. Forum shopping--defined here as the act of filing in a court that does not serve the geographical area of the debtor's corporate headquarters--now occurs in more than half of all big-case bankruptcies. Two jurisdictions have attracted most of the forum shoppers. During the 1980s, when a large portion of the shopping was to New York, the lawyers involved asserted that New York was a natural venue because of its role as the country's financial capital and because so …

Low-Temperature Molecular Beam Epitaxy Of Gaas: A Theoretical Investigation Of Antisite Incorporation And Reflection High-Energy Diffraction Oscillations, K. Natarajan, Rama Venkat, Donald L. Dorsey
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research
Surface dynamics dominate the incorporation of charged, As+Ga, and neutral, As0Ga, antisite arsenic, and the temporal variation of reflection high-energy electron diffraction(RHEED) intensity in the low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy of (100) gallium arsenide(GaAs). A rate equation model is proposed which includes the presence and dynamics of a physisorbed arsenic (PA) layer riding the growth surface. The PA layer dictates the incorporation and concentration of As+Ga and As0Ga. Additionally, it influences the RHEED oscillations (ROs) behavior and the RO’s dependence on its coverage through its contribution to the reflected intensity. The model results for the dependence of As+Ga and As0Ga concentrations …

Use Of Evolutionary Factor Analysis In The Spectroelectrochemistry Of Escherichia Coli Sulfite Reductase Hemoprotein And A Mo/Fe/S Cluster, Robert L. Keesey, Michael D. Ryan
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
The deconvolution of spectroelectrochemical data is often quite difficult if the spectra of intermediates are not known. Factor analysis, however, has been shown to be a powerful technique which can make it possible to deconvolute overlapping spectra. In this work, evolving factor analysis will be used to determine the number of intermediates and the spectra of those species for two typical spectroelectrochemical experiments: linear scan voltammetry and chronoabsorptometry in a thin-layer cell. The first system was the reduction of E. coli sulfite reductase hemoprotein (SiR-HP). Principal factor analysis indicated that three species were present. By using evolving factor analysis, …

Thermal Decomposition And Combustion Of Γ-Irradiated Polyamide 6 Containing Phosphorus Oxynitride Or Phospham, A. I. Balabanovich, Sergei V. Levchik, Galina F. Levchik, W. Schnabel, Charles Wilkie
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Polyamide 6 (PA-6) containing the fire retardants phosphorus oxynitride ((PON)m) or phospham ((PN2H)n) was exposed to 60Co-γ-rays (absorbed dose: 1.0–4.0 MGy). The irradiation led to crosslinking of the polymer which caused an increase in the char yield and a decrease in the flammability of the polymer. The combustion behavior was strongly affected by irradiation: dripping was totally prevented in the case of system PA-6/(PN2H)n and strongly retarded in the case of system PA-6/(PON)m. The thermal stability of the system PA-6/(PN2H)n decreased with increasing absorbed dose …
A Product Development Study: Rainbow Trout Bologna, Marshall Dean Smith
A Product Development Study: Rainbow Trout Bologna, Marshall Dean Smith
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Mechanically deboned rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was analyzed and then used in texture studies. The meat contained a moderately low amount of fat (10% ± 2%, x ± SD). Pre-deboned meat had more calcium than deboned meat (P < 0.001). Sausages were made of fish and various non-meat ingredients including egg whites, collagen, soy protein isolate, starch, cellulose, and wheat gluten. Adhesiveness, cohesiveness, hardness, shear and springiness of the cooked sausages were measured to describe texture. The data were fit to linear and quadratic models. Adhesiveness data did not fit the model (F(6,50)=1.1, P > {F{=0.37). A combined response model predicted formulations for fish sausage that would closely duplicate the texture of commercially available processed meats. A thermal model was developed that helped verify the thermal properties of rainbow trout. Thermal conductivity was measured (k == 0.48 W/m·K) and specific heat was calculated (Cp= 3200 J/kg·K).

The purpose of this study was to assess similarities and differences in marital adjustment between Deaf-Deaf and Deaf-hearing married couples. In examining marital adjustment, Spanier's Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale (RDAS) was translated from English to American Sign Language (ASL) and administered to 30 Deaf-Deaf and 22 Deaf-hearing couple respondents.
Although there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups. Deaf-Deaf couples tended to have higher marital adjustment mean scores than Deaf-hearing couples. Deaf-hearing females reported the lowest levels of marital adjustment.
A qualitative component of the study yielded information concerning what Deaf-Deaf and Deaf-hearing couples consider the most important …
Construction And Analysis Of A Family Of Numerical Methods For Hyperbolic Conservation Laws With Stiff Source Terms, Cinnamon Hillyard
Construction And Analysis Of A Family Of Numerical Methods For Hyperbolic Conservation Laws With Stiff Source Terms, Cinnamon Hillyard
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Numerical schemes for the partial differential equations used to characterize stiffly forced conservation laws are constructed and analyzed. Partial differential equations of this form are found in many physical applications including modeling gas dynamics, fluid flow, and combustion. Many difficulties arise when trying to approximate solutions to stiffly forced conservation laws numerically. Some of these numerical difficulties are investigated.
A new class of numerical schemes is developed to overcome some of these problems. The numerical schemes are constructed using an infinite sequence of conservation laws.
Restrictions are given on the schemes that guarantee they maintain a uniform bound and satisfy …

60Co-γ-irradiated samples of polystyrene (PSt), poly(1,4-butadiene), (PBD), and two poly(styrene-co-butadiene)s containing 25 and 75% BD were subjected to thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), in the presence and absence of O2. In the case of PSt the irradiation caused a significant shift in Tonset, the onset temperature for mass loss, to higher temperatures, whereas in the cases of the BD-containing polymers irradiation caused a decrease in Tonset (oxic irradiation) or had little or no effect on Tonset (anoxic irradiation). The amount of non-volatile residue formed in the cases of BD-containing polymers was augmented by …
Independent Verification Of Specification Models For Large Software Systems At The Early Phases Of Development Lifecycle, Khalid Lateef
Independent Verification Of Specification Models For Large Software Systems At The Early Phases Of Development Lifecycle, Khalid Lateef
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
One of the major challenges facing the software industry, in general and IV&V (Independent Verification and Validation) analysts in particular, is to find ways for analyzing dynamic behavior of requirement specifications of large software systems early in the development lifecycle. Such analysis can significantly improve the performance and reliability of the developed systems. This dissertation addresses the problem of developing an IV&V framework for extracting semantics of dynamic behavior from requirement specifications based on: (1) SART (Structured Analysis with Realtime) models, and (2) UML (Unified Modeling Language) models.;For SART, the framework presented here shows a direct mapping from SART specification …
Constructivism And Reconstructionism: Educating Teachers For World Citizenship, Mary Lou Breithorde, Louise Swiniarski
Constructivism And Reconstructionism: Educating Teachers For World Citizenship, Mary Lou Breithorde, Louise Swiniarski
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Public education is characterized by tension between the goals of enlightening individuals and improving society. In the United States, the emphasis has been on individual needs. We design lessons which respect for child as a maker of meaning. We teach to individual learning styles and are concerned that the curriculum "make sense." Given an ideology which sees the individual as the source of economic and political welfare, we comfortably focus on their intellectual and personal growth and call it “constructivism”. At other times, education for social responsibility took priority. During economic depressions, wars and civic strife, we taught children to …
Multiple Data Sources: Converging And Diverging Conceptualizations Of Lote Teaching, Kazuyoshi Sato, Robert Kleinsasser
Multiple Data Sources: Converging And Diverging Conceptualizations Of Lote Teaching, Kazuyoshi Sato, Robert Kleinsasser
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The study, uncovered Japanese Language Other Than English (LOTE) teachers' understandings of communicative language teaching (CLT). Using the idea of multiple data sources, the project relied on open ended interviews, classroom observations, and LOTE teacher survey responses. The data provided answers to two research questions: 1) What are LOTE teachers' beliefs and knowledge about (communicative) language teaching? and 2) How do LOTE teachers implement CLT in their classrooms. The multiple data sources provided information that both converged and diverged, providing insights not only into communicative language teaching, but also teachers' views of language teaching in general. The various sources allowed …

Geochemistry And Petrogenesis Of The Bonanza King Mafic Intrusive Complex, Trinity Terrane Ophiolite, California, Keith R. Willse
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The Bonanza King mafic intrusive complex (MIC) (>25 km2) of the Trinity terrane ophiolite, northern California, consists of cogenetic plutonic and dike lithologies. Steep intrusive contacts exist between cumulate pyroxenite, isotropic gabbro, and peridotite country rock. Near vertical east-west trending, bimodal dikes intruded gabbro and are centered within the complex. Geochemical modeling indicates taht accumulation/fractionation of a gabbroic parental magma produced lithologic trends of cumulate pyroxenite and fractionated gabbro and dike lithologies. Similarities between all lithologies suggest cogenetic formation of all the elements of the Bonanza King MIC during the Late Silurian (431 +/- 3).

The Geochronology And Geochemistry Of The Bearhead Rhyolite, Jemez Volcanic Field, New Mexico, Leigh Justet
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Around 82% of mapped Bearhead Rhyolite (Main Cluster) and Peralta Tuff appears to have been derived from a relatively long-lived (~680 ka), large, shallow (Earth's surface) magma chamber that did not produce a caldera-forming eruption. Although volatile contents were great enough (~ wt.% H2O), no large-scale explosive eruptions occurred because magma may have been tectonically vented. The lack of systematic chemical variation within the Main Cluster with time during this ~680 ka interval may imply that erupted magmas were physically separated from each other by fault-formed cupolas in the roof of the magma chamber. These results are significant …
The Origin Of Brucite In Hydrothermally Altered Limestone Near Devil Peak, Nevada, Rhonda L. Knupp
The Origin Of Brucite In Hydrothermally Altered Limestone Near Devil Peak, Nevada, Rhonda L. Knupp
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Open-space brucite was identified in veins crosscutting hydrothermally altered limestone near the Devil Peak rhyolite plug in southern Nevada. The brucite occurs with serpentine, calcite, chalcedony, hydromagnesite, dolomite, and clinochlore.
Brucite usually forms as a replacement mineral, but textural evidence indicates that the brucite at Devil Peak precipitated in open space. The presence of chalcedony in veins indicates the temperature of the hydrothermal fluid was <180oC during and after mineral deposition. Thermodynamic modeling shows this temperature is too low for replacement brucite to form, thus the low temperature of alteration may be a factor in this unusual occurrence of …180
