Private Industry Initiative At Bird Control: A Success Story, Nick Barnes, Rhian Christie, Stan Kruse May 1999

Private Industry Initiative At Bird Control: A Success Story, Nick Barnes, Rhian Christie, Stan Kruse

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

An increase in land development pressures and land use conflicts in urban centres with airports requires that a greater priority be placed on bird control and wildlife management. This is a particularly high concern for the siting and operation of landfills. Minimizing the potential for bird/wildlife interactions with aircraft is critical to maintaining air traffic safety. Browning-Ferris Industries (BFI) has demonstrated a corporate sensitivity to the bird management issue. A corporate commitment has been made to address the issue of bird management at waste management facilities in the vicinity of airports. This paper provides an overview of two case studies …

Temporal And Spatial Patterns Of Avifauna On Wetlands In The Vicinity Of Bush Field Airport, Augusta, Georgia, Usa, Robert A. Kennamer, L. Brisbin Jr., K. F. Gaines, W. L. Stephens Jr. May 1999

Temporal And Spatial Patterns Of Avifauna On Wetlands In The Vicinity Of Bush Field Airport, Augusta, Georgia, Usa, Robert A. Kennamer, L. Brisbin Jr., K. F. Gaines, W. L. Stephens Jr.

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

Responding to a U.S. Federal court order to improve discharged wastewater quality, Augusta, Georgia initiated development of artificial wetlands in 1997 to treat effluents. Because of the proximity to Augusta Regional Airport at Bush Field, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration expressed concern for potential increased hazard to aircraft posed by birds attracted to these wetlands. We commenced weekly low-level aerial surveys of habitats in the area beginning January, 1998. Over a one-year period, 49 surveys identified approximately 42,000 birds representing 52 species, including protected Wood Storks and Bald Eagles, using wetlands within 8 km of the airport. More birds were …

Enterprise Resource Planning Systems And Their Impact On Development And Training: A Study Of Instructional Methods In North America, Sharon L. Bassette, Wendy L. Carney, Lori A. Laney

Education Masters

One of the most important issues facing the modern world today is the Year 2000 problem. One of the greatest impacts of this problem is experienced by legacy computer systems. These are the database systems that run our businesses. Legacy systems are operated by segregated software packages that may or may not be able to "communicate" to each other. With the globalization of the economy, business computer systems need to be able to communicate with each other. This type of situation is what enterprise resource planning software is designed to solve. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems provide a common, consistent …

Close-Range And Satellite Remote Sensing Of Algal Biomass In The Iowa Great Lakes, Eric A. Wilson May 1999

Close-Range And Satellite Remote Sensing Of Algal Biomass In The Iowa Great Lakes, Eric A. Wilson

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The utility of both close-range and satellite remote sensing for assessing inland water quality was examined in the Iowa Great Lakes. The water quality of this system is of considerable interest because of its status as an environmental, recreational, and therefore, economic resource. The broad range of optical conditions present in the lakes and the wealth of literature on the system make it an ideal environment for water quality remote sensing research. The goal of this research was to survey the water quality of the Iowa Great Lakes via remote sensing, evaluate different predictive algorithms, and map the distribution of …

An Assessment Of The World-Wide Risk To Aircraft From Large Flocking Birds, J. R. Allan, J. C. Bell, V. S. Jackson May 1999

An Assessment Of The World-Wide Risk To Aircraft From Large Flocking Birds, J. R. Allan, J. C. Bell, V. S. Jackson

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

The difficulties encountered in interpreting the available data, which arise from incomplete or inaccurate information being submitted, or from inconsistent reporting by national organisations, illustrate the importance of recording and reporting birdstrike incidents. Even allowing for the fact that birdstrikes with large birds, and especially those with flocks, are more likely to be reported, it is probable that the database established for this project contains only a fraction of the incidents that have actually occurred. Nevertheless, some broad conclusions can be drawn from the data available, and as more data are collected, predictions and estimates can be refined and the …

Pigeon And Crows Population Control By Trapping, Ben (Ze'ev) Foux May 1999

Pigeon And Crows Population Control By Trapping, Ben (Ze'ev) Foux

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

Feral pigeons (Columba Livia) are a safety problem all around the airdrome, as they fly in big, dense flocks crossing the runways. Pigeons are also one of the worst causes of foreign object damage in the hangars and are an environmental and health hazard. The hooded crow is found around runways in Israeli air-bases, due to the thick vegetation that can be found in the bases. Other methods for bird population control in use now involve either repulsing (glue, spikes, nets) or eliminating (poison, shooting). Trapping is an environmental friendly, cost-effective long term solution, with a history of thousands of …

The Effects Of Changes In The Northern Lapwing Population On The Bird Strike Hazard In The Uk, J. C. Bell May 1999

The Effects Of Changes In The Northern Lapwing Population On The Bird Strike Hazard In The Uk, J. C. Bell

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

Changes in bird populations have been recognised as affecting the risk to aircraft of a bird strike. However, in terms of bird strike prevention, changes are generally only considered at the local level i.e. reducing the number of birds on the airfield. At a national level, concern has been expressed about recent increases in waterfowl, particularly geese, and the implications that this may have for flight safety, and management of the risk. However, although work is currently being undertaken to investigate if higher numbers of large waterfowl are causing an increased risk to safety (Allan, Bell & Jackson in press), …

Monitoring The Distribution, Abundance, And Movements Of Birds Near Vancouver International Airport, M. W. Demarchi, G. F. Searing, M. K. Mcnicholl, T. Mochizuki May 1999

Monitoring The Distribution, Abundance, And Movements Of Birds Near Vancouver International Airport, M. W. Demarchi, G. F. Searing, M. K. Mcnicholl, T. Mochizuki

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

The Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is Canada’s second-busiest civil airport and is located on the Fraser River delta—the staging and wintering ground for millions of birds representing many taxonomic groups. Consequently, YVR experiences one of the highest bird-strike rates of any airport in Canada. Since 1994, LGL Limited has investigated and monitored avian ecology as it relates to existing and potential hazards to air-traffic safety at YVR. A formalized monitoring program is on-going. The distribution, abundance, and flight patterns of birds are recorded and summarized by individual species or by taxonomic group. Monthly and semiannual reports present information that depict …

Feather Identification And A New Electronic System For Reporting Us Air Force Bird Strikes, Carla J. Dove May 1999

Feather Identification And A New Electronic System For Reporting Us Air Force Bird Strikes, Carla J. Dove

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

The number of bird strike cases received from U.S. Air Force bases for identification has increased from 640 in 1996 to more than 840 in 1998. The additional workload, together with staff shortages on the BASH team, created a need for a more efficient reporting system. Previously, all bird strike remains were funneled through the Safety Center at Kirtland Air Force Base where they were logged into a database, forwarded to the Smithsonian Institution for identification, and then sent back to Kirtland for data entry of results before being returned to field personnel. This system facilitated a bottleneck in the …

Derivation Of A Dummy Bird For Analysis And Test Of Airframe Structures, Chris H. Edge, J. Degrieck May 1999

Derivation Of A Dummy Bird For Analysis And Test Of Airframe Structures, Chris H. Edge, J. Degrieck

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

Certification of aircraft against the birdstrike threat is expensive and time consuming. With the need to reduce design life cycle time and costs with ever more complex structures (materials, geometries and manufacturing methods) yet with no reduction in safety, the possibilities of certification via generic analysis is an attractive proposition. This paper discusses one approach being considered within British Aerospace (BAe). It relies heavily on research activities that have derived extensive data for bird biometrics and innovative testing that can provide mechanical data for bird failure modes unique to military aircraft.

Whilst almost all birdstrike clearance is performed via testing …

The Perspectives Of The Air Line Pilots Association On Strikes Of Wildlife By Aircraft, Paul F. Eschenfelder May 1999

The Perspectives Of The Air Line Pilots Association On Strikes Of Wildlife By Aircraft, Paul F. Eschenfelder

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 1st (1999)

Strikes of wildlife by aircraft cause thousands of life-threatening incidents, and hundreds of millions of dollars worth of damage to aircraft every year. This hazard is largely preventable, but it has not been properly addressed to date for a variety of reasons. ALPA believes that action should be taken now before a catastrophe occurs.

Collisions between aircraft and wildlife are increasing in frequency in North America due to growth in the number of migratory birds and other wildlife and the increased numbers of aircraft operations. This threat to human safety has manifested itself in several fatal strikes between aircraft and …

Parity violation has been studied recently for neutron resonances in 117Sn. The neutron resonance spectroscopy is essential for the analysis of the parity violation data. We have measured neutron resonances in 117Sn for neutron energies from 1 to 1500 eV using the time-of-flight method and the (n,γ) reaction. The sample was enriched to 87.6% 117Sn. Neutron scattering and radiative widths were determined, and orbital angular momentum assignments were made with a Bayesian analysis. The s-wave and p-wave strength functions and average level spacings were determined.

Implications Of Stomatal Interactions, Thomas Norman Buckley May 1999

Implications Of Stomatal Interactions, Thomas Norman Buckley

Biology

Though stomatal apertures often vary randomly within a leaf, suggesting somata behave independently, recent evidence suggests stomata may interact. In the phenomenon of patchy stomatal conductance, stomatal behavior becomes coordinated at the intermediate scale of one or more areoles but discoordinated at larger scales. This has two general implications. First, it makes relationships between certain gas exchange properties highly scale dependent, affecting the interpretation of large-scale measurements in terms of small-scale properties and the upscaling of models based on small-scale mechanisms. Second, it indicates some yet-unidentified mechanism for stomatal interactions. A model of gas exchange in a leaf with heterogeneous …

Surface Composition Of CoXNi1-XO Solid Solutions By X-Ray Photoelectron And Auger Spectroscopies, M. W. Nydegger, G. Couderc, Marjorie Langell May 1999

Surface Composition Of CoXNi1-XO Solid Solutions By X-Ray Photoelectron And Auger Spectroscopies, M. W. Nydegger, G. Couderc, Marjorie Langell

Marjorie A. Langell Publications

The surface and bulk compositions of the mixed metal oxide CoxNi1-xO have been compared over the entire range of stoichiometry 0 ≤ x ≤ 1. The materials, which were formed as polycrystalline solid solutions, were shown to be well-ordered and homogeneous in the bulk, but tend to deviate in their surface composition for x > 0.6. Auger and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy gave comparable results and indicated that the surface composition for samples showing deviation from bulk stoichiometry was compatible with the formation of a spinel-like NiCo2O4 surface phase. XPS binding energies and spectral …

Weber Basin Water Quality Optimization, P. Wayne Hale Ii, Elizabeth Hales, Kade Moncur, Jonathan Oldham

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Salt Lake City, after evaluating its projected water needs for the next 25 years, has proposed to route 300 MGD of water via pipeline from the Bear River to Salt Lake's culinary water system. According to Weber Basin Water Conservancy District officials, this water will be available between October and March (the irrigation off-season). En route to the system, the water will pass through an area known as the "Slaterville Diversion" subsequent to water treatment at a new plant. The Diversion is currently the mixing point for several water sources. These waters need to be managed and mixed appropriately with …

Hydrologic Time Series Forecasting With Specialized Autoregressive Neural Networks, Paul Edward Roundy May 1999

Hydrologic Time Series Forecasting With Specialized Autoregressive Neural Networks, Paul Edward Roundy

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Interannual forecasts of hydrologic time series are important for water supply management.  Specialized neural network algorithms for such forecasts are developed here.  These methods are based on  the principles of nonlinear dynamics and an autoregresive backpropogation training algorithm.  The applicable nonlinear methods are described, as well as the algorithm.  Some of the problems of these networks are summarized, along with some of their positive attributes.  Tests showed that they may be able to learn and forecast some hydrologic data.  These networks were most successful for  forecasting the flows of the Colorado River.  Some example forecasts are given, including the peaks …

A Social Analysis Of Grazing Management On National Forest Lands: A Case Study In Catron County, New Mexico, Alexis S. Watts

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The rural west in this country faces increased national pressure concerning the management of natural resources on public lands. Issues regarding natural resource management are becoming more important as they continue to affect rural communities and capture the attention of a variety of interest groups. Natural resource managers are increasingly required to consider social dimensions of resource use and management. Lack of consideration in these areas can lead to dissatisfied, and even hostile, local residents and interest groups. Often land managers face criticism from many groups at once as a result of management decisions.

This study analyzed a particular resource …

Cenozoic Structural And Stratigraphic Evolution Of The Southeastern Salmon Basin, East-Central Idaho, James J. Blankenau May 1999

Cenozoic Structural And Stratigraphic Evolution Of The Southeastern Salmon Basin, East-Central Idaho, James J. Blankenau

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The southeastern Salmon basin (SB) of east-central Idaho is a complex east-dipping half graben containing four unconformity-bounded sequences of Tertiary volcanic, alluvial fan, lacustrine, and fluvial deposits. From oldest to youngest these are the Challis volcanic group, sedimentary rocks of Tendoy (new name), sedimentary rocks of Sacajaweja (new name), and Quaternary-Tertiary deposits . The thick sequence of volcanic rocks was deposited in a southeast-trending paleovalley . New mapping, cross-cutting relationships, 40Ar/39Ar age determinations, and angular unconformities show that the SB has experienced at least four episodes of extension, and that it lies in the core of an …

Measurement Of Angle-Resolved Secondary Electron Spectra, Robert Davies May 1999

Measurement Of Angle-Resolved Secondary Electron Spectra, Robert Davies

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Theoretical formulations of secondary electron emission over the past 20 years have exceeded the confirming ability of available measurements. An instrument has been developed and tested for the purpose of obtaining simultaneous angle- and energy-resolved (AER) secondary and backscattered electron measurements for energetic electrons incident on conducting surfaces. The instrument is found to be in good working order and the data quality found to be excellent for nearly all angles and energies investigated. A representative set of AER measurements has been acquired for 1500 eV electrons normally incident on polycrystalline gold. The data have been used to construct angle-resolved (AR) …

Ultraviolet-B Radiation: Effects On Pollen Of 34 Taxa, And Inheritance Patterns And Carryover Of Radiation Response In Arabidopsis, Javad Torabinejad May 1999

Ultraviolet-B Radiation: Effects On Pollen Of 34 Taxa, And Inheritance Patterns And Carryover Of Radiation Response In Arabidopsis, Javad Torabinejad

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Although considerable research has addressed effects of elevated ultraviolet-B (UV-8) radiation on vegetative plant structures and processes, the reproductive biology and patterns of inheritance of UV-B tolerance have received much less attention. I examined the effects of UV-B radiation on pollen of 34 taxa. I also addressed questions concerning the patterns of inheritance of UV-B tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana and examined potential cumulative carryover effects of UV-B exposure through multiple generations of this species.

In the first study, a significant reduction in pollen germination occurred in only five species, but pollen tube growth in more than half of the species …
