Search For BS0-B̅S0, F. Abe, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration May 1999

Search For BS0-B̅S0, F. Abe, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

A search for Bs0-B̅s0 oscillations is performed in a sample of Bs0 semileptonic decays collected using dilepton triggers at the Tevatron Collider during 1992–1995. The Bs0 is reconstructed using φ mesonlepton correlations; its initial production flavor is determined with the second lepton in the event. From a signal of 1068 with a Bs0 purity of 61%, we obtain a limit on the Bs0-B̅s0 oscillation frequency of Δms>5.8 ps-1 at 95% confidence level.

The Mean Spherical Approximation For A Dipolar Yukawa Fluid, Douglas Henderson, Dezso Boda, Istvan Szalai, Kwong-Yu Chan May 1999

The Mean Spherical Approximation For A Dipolar Yukawa Fluid, Douglas Henderson, Dezso Boda, Istvan Szalai, Kwong-Yu Chan

Faculty Publications

The dipolar hard sphere fluid (DHSF) is a useful model of a polar fluid. However, the DHSF lacks a vapor–liquid transition due to the formation of chain-like structures. Such chains are not characteristic of real polar fluids. A more realistic model of a polar fluid is obtained by adding a Lennard–Jones potential to the intermolecular potential. Very similar results are obtained by adding a Yukawa potential, instead of the Lennard–Jones potential. We call this fluid the dipolar Yukawa fluid (DYF). We show that an analytical solution of the mean spherical approximation (MSA) can be obtained for the DYF. Thus, the …

Non-Rayleigh Signal Statistics In Clustered Statistically Homogeneous Rain, A. R. Jameson, Alexander Kostinski May 1999

Non-Rayleigh Signal Statistics In Clustered Statistically Homogeneous Rain, A. R. Jameson, Alexander Kostinski

Department of Physics Publications

As the sample volume of a remote sensing instrument moves through sufficiently variable conditions, recent work shows that the amplitudes and associated intensities can deviate significantly at times from expectations based on Rayleigh signal statistics because fluctuations in the number of scatterers leads to a doubly stochastic measurement process. While non-Rayleigh deviations yield average biases for both logarithmic and linear detectors, perhaps of greater importance is the enhancement of the variance of the bias distribution for square law detectors. In this work the authors explore the potential existence of non-Rayleigh effects even in the statistically homogeneous rain when fluctuations in …

The Exploration Of Artificial Intelligence Through The Analysis And Design Of Expert Systems, Avis R. Calvert May 1999

The Exploration Of Artificial Intelligence Through The Analysis And Design Of Expert Systems, Avis R. Calvert

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

Expert systems are a rapidly developing area of research. A sub-area of artificial intelligence, the success of expert systems depends heavily on an expert of a particular subject matter and that expert's ability to make analytical inferences based upon the human capacity to reason and deduce. Because the broad and ultimate goal of artificial intelligence is to develop computers capable of emulating human behavioral and psychoanalytical patterns, there is much to discover about the learning component of a computer. This thesis focuses on the development and the complexity of expert systems. Included, is a brief history of expert systems, a …

Selective Area Laser Induced Deposition Of Metal Borides, Veronica K. Holmes, Z. C. Zhong, P A. Dowben May 1999

Selective Area Laser Induced Deposition Of Metal Borides, Veronica K. Holmes, Z. C. Zhong, P A. Dowben

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

A novel technique, laser-induced solution deposition (LISD), has been developed for the selective area deposition of rare earth hexaborides. This technique was simple and efficient and combined advantages of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and electrolytic deposition. The deposition of polycrystalline thin films of hexaborides and sub-borides, such as MB6, MB4, and MB2 (M = Gd, La), occurred by the light-initiated chemical reaction of nido-decaborane (B10H14) and rare earth chlorides in solution. These films grew with a strongly textured axis and had a morphology that was dependent on solvents and irradiation wavelength. Deposition of …

The Binding Of Selected Xenoestrogens To An Estrogen-Binding Fraction, Willie L. Washington May 1999

The Binding Of Selected Xenoestrogens To An Estrogen-Binding Fraction, Willie L. Washington

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that effects of xenoestrogens may be mediated through a low-affinity estrogen-binding site. This low-affinity estrogen-binding site (EBS) is found in rat uterus. A second receptor, the Type I-(high-affinity-EBS). is also present in the uterus and other tissues. In order to obtain the estrogen-binding fraction-from the uterus, an ammonium sulfate (AS) fractionation was performed on rat-uterine cytosol. Two fractions were made, a 40% AS, which contained the Type I estrogen receptor (ER) and a 70¾ AS fraction that contained the low-affinity estrogen-binding site. These fractions were assayed for their ability to …

The Design And Implementation Of A Virtual Type Specimen, Keli Mccreadie May 1999

The Design And Implementation Of A Virtual Type Specimen, Keli Mccreadie

Theses

Typesetting and typography have become misunderstood terms, if not obsolete, due to the proliferation of computers. Since every computer user has access to a myriad of typefaces and the ability to modify type through software, the true qualities of many typefaces have become unrecognizable. Therefore, it is incumbent upon people to seek out the information necessary to be competent in the area of design and typography. A well-designed type specimen is the first place to start for a user to reference typographic terminology and rules. Technical characteristics of typefaces such as tracking, font metrics, leading and unique recognizable characters could …

Hieroglyphs For The Information Age: Images As A Replacement For Characters For Languages Not Written In The Latin-1 Alphabet, Akira Hasegawa May 1999

Hieroglyphs For The Information Age: Images As A Replacement For Characters For Languages Not Written In The Latin-1 Alphabet, Akira Hasegawa

Theses

One of the biggest existing problems for international users and international companies is the difficulty of displaying web pages written in multiple languages. This thesis project demonstrates a solution in which the problems of text encoding are eliminated by representing all of the text on a page as a series of image files. The Japanese text on several Japanese web pages was converted into glyphs, which were defined as image files containing images of text. The glyphs were arranged on new web pages, so that the same Japanese text can be read by any web surfer, regardless of the operating …

A Study Of Matching The Color Of Epson Stylus Color 3000 To Ansi Cgats Tr 001-1995 - Type 1 Printing, Joel Chan

Theses

ICC color management system (CMS) has become a major tool for color image rendering and color matching in the printing and publishing industry. It attempts to automate color management functions, e.g., from scan to print, and from press sheet to proof, with the use of device profiles, a CMM, and an application programming interface. Earlier studies, conducted at RIT, showed that ICC-based digital proofing did not perform better than a well calibrated film-based proofing system. Specifically, the average AE between ICC color managed proofs and a reference press sheet was found to be 6-9 while the average AE between a …

Effect Of Dipolar Molecules On Carrier Mobilities In Photorefractive Polymers, Arosha Goonesekera, Stephen Ducharme May 1999

Effect Of Dipolar Molecules On Carrier Mobilities In Photorefractive Polymers, Arosha Goonesekera, Stephen Ducharme

Stephen Ducharme Publications

The grating formation speed in photorefractive polymers is greatly reduced by highly polar molecules incorporated by necessity in large concentrations to produce large diffraction efficiency and two-beam energy coupling gain. The random electric fields generated by these dipoles interfere with charge transport by increasing the width of the hopping site energy distribution and thus greatly reducing the carrier mobility and the photorefractive speed. We conducted transport studies of several model systems consisting of combinations of two polymer binders, six charge transport agents (four for holes and two for electrons), and varying concentrations of two highly polar electro-optic chromophores. The results …

Impact Of Use Of Multiple Antimicrobials On Changes In Susceptibility Of Gram-Negative Aerobes, Lawrence V. Friedrich, Roger L. White, John A. Bosso

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Evaluation of antimicrobial usage vs. susceptibility relationships typically involves single agents. However, susceptibility profiles may be affected by multiple drugs. From 1992 through 1996, we studied relationships between drug usage and the susceptibility (only susceptibility rates of ≥70%) of Acinetobacter anitratus (baumannii), Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, and Serratia marcescens to 22 agents. Linear regression was used to assess usage of each agent vs. susceptibility to it and to all agents. Only relationships with a coefficient of determination of ≥0.5 and a negative slope were evaluated and classified as increasing drug use and …

Semiempirical R-Matrix Theory Of Low Energy Electron–Cf3Cl Inelastic Scattering, R. S. Wilde, Gordon A. Gallup, Ilya I. Fabrikant May 1999

Semiempirical R-Matrix Theory Of Low Energy Electron–Cf3Cl Inelastic Scattering, R. S. Wilde, Gordon A. Gallup, Ilya I. Fabrikant

Gordon Gallup Publications

We apply a semiempirical R-matrix theory to calculations of vibrational excitation and dissociative attachment in the CF3Cl molecule for electron energies below about 3 eV. We employ two sets of model parameters corresponding to two different forms of the CF3Cl− potential curve. We find that our present, ab initio calculated anion curve gives vibrational excitation and dissociative attachment cross sections in good agreement with experimental measurements. We also compare the results of our theory with those of a recently published classical theory.

Experimental Studies Of Magnetic Reconnection, Michael R. Brown May 1999

Experimental Studies Of Magnetic Reconnection, Michael R. Brown

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

Laboratory magnetic reconnection experiments have been performed for nearly 20 years. Elegant experiments by Stenzel and Gekelman [R. L. Stenzel and W. Gekelman, Phys. Rev. Lett. 42, 1055 (1979); W. Gekelman and R. L. Stenzel, Phys. Rev. Lett. 54, 2414 (1985)] focused on the measurement of field quantities with a single movable probe in a highly reproducible plasma. Observations included a very thin current sheet (on the order of c/ωpe), accelerated electrons, and whistler waves. The argon ions were unmagnetized in these experiments. Recent magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) experiments by Yamada and Ono have used merging plasmoids [M. Yamada, Y. Ono, A. …

Retention Of Academic Skills Over The Summer Months In Alternative And Traditional Calendar Schools, Christy Nofsinger May 1999

Retention Of Academic Skills Over The Summer Months In Alternative And Traditional Calendar Schools, Christy Nofsinger

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Alternative calendar schools are increasingly popular alternatives to the traditional nine-month school year and a three-month summer vacation. One purported advantage of a shorter summer vacation is the greater retention of academic material because there is less time to "forget" what was learned. While alternative calendar schools appear to be increasing in number, little research has been conducted to actually measure academic differences in these schools. The purpose of this research was to systematically compare the retention of academic skills of students in traditional and alternative calendar schools over the summer months. Three county-wide school districts participated in this study. …

An Immobolized Surfactant Extraction Technique Compatible With High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Ultraviolet Visible Detection, Ming Zhu May 1999

An Immobolized Surfactant Extraction Technique Compatible With High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Ultraviolet Visible Detection, Ming Zhu

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Surfactant mediated extractions are analogous to liquid-liquid extractions (LLE) except surfactants are used as extractants instead of organic solvents. The benefit for using surfactants for extractions includes lower toxicity, lower associated costs and direct compatibility with high performance liquid chromatography techniques. In this study, a novel immobilized surfactant extraction method was developed. In this method, the cationic alklytrimethylamrnonium surfactants are immobilized onto a strong cationic exchange resin through ion exchange. This surfactant-resin material is placed in a column and aqueous solutions containing analytes are passed through. The analytes are retained by the long carbon chain of the surfactant molecules and …
