A Low Power Approach To Small Satellite Propulsion, Joe Cardin, Larry Mosher Aug 1999

A Low Power Approach To Small Satellite Propulsion, Joe Cardin, Larry Mosher

Small Satellite Conference

Small Satellites are emerging as the preferred platform for a wide variety of earth orbit and even interplanetary missions. These spacecraft are, by their very nature, extremely limited in volume, mass and power. Existing fluid propulsion options are too large, costly and complex for many small satellite applications. In an attempt to address this problem the Applied Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University, as part of an advanced development contract with NASA, has contracted with V ACCO Industries. The objective of this program is to conceive and demonstrate a cold gas propulsion system specifically designed for small satellites. Major design …

A Maintenance-Free Battery Charge Control Approach For Nickel-Hydrogen Batteries, Andrew Lewin Aug 1999

A Maintenance-Free Battery Charge Control Approach For Nickel-Hydrogen Batteries, Andrew Lewin

Small Satellite Conference

The most common battery charging approaches for nickel-hydrogen batteries suffer from two key limitations. They either consistently under- or overcharge the battery or they require accurate knowledge of the battery capacity. For the ORBCOMM constellation of 36 small communications satellites, regular overcharging is unacceptable because it decreases battery life. Worse, the lost life occurs when the satellite constellation is facing its greatest usage demand. On the other hand, obtaining an accurate knowledge of the battery capacity requires an upfront effort to develop the necessary engineering tools and characterize battery performance. In addition, the satellite operator must bear the recurring expense …

Development Of Gimbaled Laser Beacon Mechanism, Jennifer Huddle, Anabel Marcos, Badrinarayan Shirgur

Small Satellite Conference

The Photon Satellite Project is being sponsored by the Florida Space Institute (FSI). FSI is working on the Conceptual Design Phase for this project under a contract from the Department of Defense Ballistic Missile Defense Organization. The science mission for this satellite is to characterize the atmospheric effects on a laser communications system. The development of a gimbaled laser beacon mechanism focuses on the secondary payload of that science mission, which serves as a downlink of laser signals from space to the ground station located at the Innovative Science and Technology Experimental Facility (ISTEP) at the Kennedy Space Center. This …

Operations Planning And Formation Flying: Analyzing Resource Usage In Formation Assembly , Brian Engberg Aug 1999

Operations Planning And Formation Flying: Analyzing Resource Usage In Formation Assembly , Brian Engberg

Small Satellite Conference

Increasing interest in small spacecraft has fostered a variety of new mission concepts. Within this busy framework, one particular family of mission concepts is taking shape - spacecraft formations. Formation flying entails the organized collection of satellites in a region of space to do a certain job. Missions of this kind pose some interesting design challenges. Most notably, active control of a formation is a fairly popular topic. The aim of s.uch research is to devise a means of stabilizing a loosely bound system while conserving valuable resources. Another area, which seems to be lagging in attention, is the area …

where , and . For rational such matrices are periodic, and their Wiener-Hopf factorization with respect to the real line always exists and can be constructed explicitly. For irrational , a certain modification (called an almost periodic factorization) can be considered instead. The case of invertible and commuting , was disposed of earlier-it was discovered that an almost periodic factorization of such matrices does not always exist, and a necessary and sufficient condition for its existence was found. This paper is devoted mostly to the situation when is not invertible but the commute pairwise (). The complete description is …

Micro-Scanning Laser Range Finders And Position-Attitude Determination For Formation Flight , Hirobumi Saito, Tatsuaki Hashimoto, Kenji Kasamura, Hiroshi Goto Aug 1999

Micro-Scanning Laser Range Finders And Position-Attitude Determination For Formation Flight , Hirobumi Saito, Tatsuaki Hashimoto, Kenji Kasamura, Hiroshi Goto

Small Satellite Conference

There are several space missions which require a cluster of micro spacecraft with small area of several kilometer. We propose an asteroid mission by means of several micro spacecraft in formation flight. We are in progress to develop a micro-scanning laser range finder (MS-LRF) for navigation system of such cluster missions. The MS-LRF is a LRF which utilized a two-dimensional scanner fabricated by micromachine technology. Also we propose navigation algorithm to determine the relative position and attitude of member spacecraft in the cluster using MS-LRFs.

The Gander Microsatellite Radar Altimeter Constellation For Global Sea State Monitoring , Yuanxing Zheng Aug 1999

The Gander Microsatellite Radar Altimeter Constellation For Global Sea State Monitoring , Yuanxing Zheng

Small Satellite Conference

In the last two decades satellite borne radar altimetry has been demonstrated as a very effective and accurate remote sensing method in sea state monitoring by over ten missions. Although all the previous missions have focused on oceanography, glaciology and land topography study, radar altimeter's unique advantage in providing fast access altimetry measurement of significant wave height (SWH) and sea swface wind speed sensing has also generated great interests in several commercial applications such as a constellation for global real time sea safety monitoring and the shipping route management. In this paper, a low cost 12 microsatellite network called GANDER …

Divisible Tilings In The Hyperbolic Plane, Sean A. Broughton, Dawn M. Haney, Lori T. Mckeough, Brandy M. Smith Aug 1999

Divisible Tilings In The Hyperbolic Plane, Sean A. Broughton, Dawn M. Haney, Lori T. Mckeough, Brandy M. Smith

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

We consider triangle-quadrilateral pairs in the hyperbolic plane which "kaleidoscopically" tile the plane simultaneously. In this case the tiling by quadrilaterals is called a divisible tiling. All possible such divisible tilings are classified. There are a finite number of 1,2, and 3 parameter families as well as a finite number of exceptional cases.

A Microsatellite "Space Guard" Force, Matt Bille, Robyn Kane, Martin Oetting, Donna Dickey Aug 1999

A Microsatellite "Space Guard" Force, Matt Bille, Robyn Kane, Martin Oetting, Donna Dickey

Small Satellite Conference

The microsatellites now under development will be capable of a variety of inspection, surveillance, servicing, and propulsion services. As the military and commercial importance of space increases, a practical near-term use of this technology will be to provide the kind of services in space that the U.S. Coast Guard provides on Earth. The Coast Guard provides the U.S. coastal waters with law enforcement, search and rescue, safety inspection, and a myriad of other services. All these services are needed in the near-Earth region as well, and will become more critical as thousands of additional satellites are launched. A "Space Guard" …

Switching Properties Of Self-Assembled Ferroelectric Memory Cells, M. Alexe, Alexei Gruverman, C. Harnagea, N. D. Zakharov, A. Pignolet, D. Hesse, J. F. Scott

Alexei Gruverman Publications

In this letter, we report on the switching properties of an ordered system of Bi4Ti3O12 ferroelectric memory cells of an average lateral size of 0.18 μm formed via a self-assembling process. The ferroelectricity of these cells has been measured microscopically and it has been demonstrated that an individual cell of 0.18 μm size is switching. Switching of single nanoelectrode cells was achieved via scanning force microscopy working in piezoresponse mode.

Where Have All The Packing Plants Gone? The New Meat Geography In Rural America, Mark Drabenstott, Mark Henry, Kristin Mitchell Aug 1999

Where Have All The Packing Plants Gone? The New Meat Geography In Rural America, Mark Drabenstott, Mark Henry, Kristin Mitchell

Bureau of Business Research Publications

The meat industry is an economic powerhouse for rural America - accounting for roughly one of every 16 rural manufacturing jobs. Moreover, this rural powerhouse is adding jobs at a fast clip, with recent growth of 8.5 percent a year versus just 1.2 percent a year for all rural manufacturing industries. Finally, rural America has captured a commanding 52 percent of all meat industry jobs, far above the level of a decade ago.

While all these figures are welcome news to rural areas eager to expand employment, geographic shifts under way in the industry raise fresh doubts over which rural …

Distinguishing Between Cold Dark Matter And Modified Newtonian Dynamics: Predictions For The Microwave Background, Stacy S. Mcgaugh Aug 1999

Distinguishing Between Cold Dark Matter And Modified Newtonian Dynamics: Predictions For The Microwave Background, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

Faculty Scholarship

Two hypothesized solutions for the mass discrepancy problem are cold dark matter and modified Newtonian dynamics. The virtues and vices of these very different hypotheses are largely disjointed, making the process of distinguishing between them very dependent on how we weigh disparate lines of evidence. One clear difference is the nature of the principal mass constituent of the universe (cold dark matter or baryons). This difference in the baryon fraction (fb, ≈ 0.1 vs. 1) should leave a distinctive signature in the spectrum of fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background. Here I discuss some of the signatures that should be …
