Valuation Of Tree Aesthetics On Small Urban-Interface Properties, Richard Thompson, Richard Hanna, Jay Noel, Douglas D. Piirto Sep 1999

Valuation Of Tree Aesthetics On Small Urban-Interface Properties, Richard Thompson, Richard Hanna, Jay Noel, Douglas D. Piirto

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

A model was developed to predict the value contribution of forest condition on small urban-wildland interface properties. Sample data were collected on property transactions in the Lake Tahoe Basin of California between 1990 and 1994. A variant of the stand density index (SDI) and a tree health measure were added to a list of traditional property characteristics (i.e., location, house size, lot size) to express the influence of tree care on property value. These aesthetic characteristics were statistically significant despite the expected dominant influence of the traditional characteristics. Values for the forest density and health characteristics were estimated and reveal …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Neutron resonances in 103Rh have been measured for neutron energies from 30 to 2000 eV using the time-of-flight method and the (n,γ) reaction. The rhodium resonance spectroscopy is essential for the analysis of parity violation measurements recently performed on neutron resonances in 103Rh. Neutron scattering and radiative widths were determined, and orbital angular momentum assignments made with a Bayesian analysis. The s-wave and p-wave strength functions and average level spacings were determined.

Leading Without Bleeding: An Information Technology Case Study At Union Pacific Railroad, Uma G. Gupta, Randy W. Butler, Thomas D. Milner

Journal of Transportation Management

In the railroad industry, the ability to assess damages to rail units in an accurate and timely manner is critical to the success and profits of a company. Accurate damage assessment of rail units also plays a key role in dispute resolution and negotiation with key vendors and suppliers (my.uprr.com/pub/dam-prev). This paper describes and presents information about Union Pacific Railroads (UPRR) and Science Applications International Corporations (SAIC) highly successful efforts in fully automating the data collection, inspection, assessment and reporting of damage claims to rail equipment. UPRR and SAIC used an innovative and highly creative approach to develop and implement …

An Investigation Into The Development Of A Software Tool For Design Of Book Pages, David Bennett Sep 1999

An Investigation Into The Development Of A Software Tool For Design Of Book Pages, David Bennett

Theses

A method of designing a readable book that does not require the user to have expert knowledge of book layout is studied and implemented by designing a computer software program. Traditional book design techniques are researched and the findings are used to plan the software's workflow and functionality. The concept is based on the use of pre-defined typographic options that the user can choose from to meet the particular needs of an individual book project. Other features guide the user through the book design process using a step-by-step approach. A working demonstration version of the soft ware concept is developed …

Curriculum And Careers: The Education And Labour Market Consequences Of Year 12 Subject Choice, Stephen Lamb, Katrina Ball Sep 1999

Curriculum And Careers: The Education And Labour Market Consequences Of Year 12 Subject Choice, Stephen Lamb, Katrina Ball

LSAY Research Reports

This report examines patterns of course enrolments in Year 12 and the consequences of students course enrolments on their education, training and work experiences to age 19. In particular, it looks at what happens to young people enrolled in different senior school subjects as they move from school to post-school education and training and to work. The analysis is based on data collected between 1990 and 1997 as part of the Australian Youth Survey (AYS), a national longitudinal survey of young people. Course enrolments were derived from information on the subjects students studied in Year 12. Course enrolments comprised the …

Parity nonconservation (PNC) was studied in p-wave neutron resonances of 103Rh in the neutron energy range 30 to 490 eV. The helicity dependence of the neutron total cross section of rhodium was determined by capture measurements with the time-of-flight method at the Manuel Lujan Neutron Scattering Center at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. A total of 32 p-wave resonances were studied and statistically significant longitudinal asymmetries were observed for resonances at En=44.5, 110.8, 321.6, and 432.9 eV. A statistical analysis treating the PNC matrix elements as random variables yields a weak spreading widthΓw=(1.42-0.59+1.21 …
