In writing this essay I will begin what I am certain will be a long, complex process of answering the question of who is my mother. I will develop the work in three parts, corresponding to critical parts of the rediscovery process. In Part II, this essay probes cultural links that are formative and transformative of our personhood, which define and determine how we interact with the various and varied communities through which we take daily voyages. I use narrative to locate myself in the context of knowing and discovering the myriad cultures in which I define my mothers. This …

Succession By Estoppel: Hong Kong's Succession To The Iccpr, Peter K. Yu
Faculty Scholarship
This Article argues that Hong Kong succeeded to the ICCPR and the reporting obligations under the Covenant. Part I of the Article traces the development of the ICCPR in Hong Kong before 1997. This development is important because the Joint Declaration provides only for the continuation of the ICCPR as applied to Hong Kong before the transition. Parts II and III examine whether Hong Kong succeeded to the ICCPR. Since the Covenant is ambiguous as to whether the contracting parties are limited to sovereign states, Part II evaluates whether Hong Kong satisfies the membership requirement as stipulated in Article 48(1) …

Art And Symbolism In Ewe Religion: Ritual Objects Of The Yewe And Tro Mami Worship In Klikor, Ghana, Coleen Wright
African Diaspora ISPs
This project investigated the symbolism represented through art in the Yewe and Tro Mami Worship in Klikor, Ghana. The research questions were what are the symbols expressed through art of the two religions and how do these symbols serve the religions. In order to do this I conducted informal interviewing, participant and non participant observations on several different occasions. Through this I was able to learn about the various relics and the function that they play in worship. The material I collected suggests that art symbolism play a vital role in religion.

Discourse Knowledge And Activity Type In Social Service Interview Openings: ‘Okay Miss Debby Girl Tell Me What’S Going On.’, Frank Bramlett
Discourse Knowledge And Activity Type In Social Service Interview Openings: ‘Okay Miss Debby Girl Tell Me What’S Going On.’, Frank Bramlett
English Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study is to investigate the nature of interview styles at a privately funded social service agency. At this agency, which helps people in a financial emergency, clients are interviewed by volunteers to determine the clients' eligibility for financial assistance. In this paper, I test Levinson' s (1992) definition of activity type through an examination of how interviewers, within the beginning moments, share knowledge of the social service interview with the clients. Specifically, I explore how two volunteer interviewers open sessions with their clients. Three different interviews were recorded for each of eleven interviewers at the agency. …

Difficult Maneuvers In Discourse Against Latina Immigrants In The United States, Josh Price
Difficult Maneuvers In Discourse Against Latina Immigrants In The United States, Josh Price
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The article critiques the tendency to homogenize violence against women, emphasizing the importance of recognizing its diverse forms and contexts. It focuses on the experiences of immigrant Latinas, particularly those in abusive relationships, and explores how legal, cultural, and ideological factors uniquely constrain their options. By examining the work of a Latina activist, the analysis highlights the need to address the intersection of gender, immigration, and domestic violence through a more nuanced lens. The article advocates for structural changes to empower immigrant women and challenge the existing legal and cultural frameworks that perpetuate their subjugation.

Performing Selves/Performing As Self: Autobiographical Films Of Children Of Jewish Holocaust Survivors, Jennifer Levi
Performing Selves/Performing As Self: Autobiographical Films Of Children Of Jewish Holocaust Survivors, Jennifer Levi
Journal of Religion & Film
For many Holocaust survivors, one of the most difficult obstacles to overcome is the simultaneous need to tell one's story and the awareness that language cannot convey the horrors of the experience. This awareness that words fall to communicate across generations, cultures, religions, etc. is the legacy of children of Jewish Holocaust survivors who both can't understand and are formed by their parents' stories/experiences. By engaging Deb Filler's film rendition of her one-woman stage show, Punch Me in the Stomach, and Abraham Ravett's documentary Everything's for You, I explore the ways in which film allows the second generation …

Extended Stratification: Immigrant And Native Differences In Individual And Family Labor., Pidi Zhang, Jimy M. Sanders
Faculty Publications
The article outlines a theoretical system of extended stratification in order to account for differences between immigrants and natives in the amount of time individuals devote to paid work and the number of family members participating in paid work. The extended stratification theory contends that because people have different socio-economic frames of reference, they vary in their willingness to work long hours in an effort to achieve modest improvements in their current socioeconomic circumstances. Thus, immigrants from relatively poor societies tend to see their richer host society as abundant in opportunities for getting ahead through hard work. Immigrants will often …

Church, State And Nation In Ukraine, Serhii Plokhy
Church, State And Nation In Ukraine, Serhii Plokhy
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Much of the current discussion concerning the future of independent Ukraine has centered on the issue of nation-building. Two models of the Ukrainian state, (1) national (the state of the ‘Ukrainian people’) and (2) multi-ethnic (the state of ‘the people of Ukraine’), usually serve as starting points for scholarly discussions.2 It is quite obvious that the future of church-state relations in Ukraine will depend heavily on the choices made by the newly independent state in its nationbuilding strategy. It is equally true that the religious policy of the government and the response to it on the part of organized religion …
