The Displacement Of Jewish Identity In Stefan Zweig's "Buchmendel", Ken Frieden Jan 1999

The Displacement Of Jewish Identity In Stefan Zweig's "Buchmendel", Ken Frieden

Religion - All Scholarship

IN THE STORY "BUCHMENDEL" ( 1929), Stefan Zweig represents Jewish identity
in Vienna as it is displaced. eclipsed, and then destroyed. Yet the narrator.
a man of the world much like Zweig himself. does not mourn this process of
ethnic effacement. Instead, he bemoans the associated destruction of literary
culture at !arge and seems unconcerned about the implications for Jews in
Vienna or elsewhere. Like other residents of Vienna during the First World
War, the urbane postwar narrator even shows a measure of unexamined xenophobia, which is surprising in light of the nesh-and-blood author's Jewish ethnicity and cosmopolitanism. Because the …

Electronic Stacks: Using Web Sources In Reference Service, Di Su

Publications and Research

The awareness of Web sources in reference service has risen in recent years, as many reference librarians have become more Internet-minded. During the reference process, we often ask ourselves: can this question be answered by using the Web? The use of Web sources is expanding the amount of available reference information, enhancing individual libraries’ collection, and hence, providing better user service. There are many benefits in using the Web sources in reference service. There are also some drawbacks. Some useful Web sources are reviewed. The Web, when used properly, provides reference librarians with a valuable resource option to help improve …

Narrating Gender: Children's Responses To Gender Roles Depicted In Orally Told Folk Tales And Other Traditional Stories, Robin Ann Mello

Educational Studies Dissertations

This qualitative investigation was based on grounded and feminist methodology and examined the reactions of ten fourth grade students to the gender roles depicted in orally told folk tales. Data consisted of surveys, writing samples, and interviews, collected in both mixed and single gender groups. Data were transcribed and coded using open and axial procedures. This study finds that heroes were valued for their aggression, strength, and warrior status while heroines were appreciated for their intelligence, caring, and endurance. Boys highly valued warrior like behavior. Girls, on the other hand, had a difficult time equating the value of 'gender bending' …

Service-Learning And School Curriculum, Amy Yip Ah-May Jan 1999

Service-Learning And School Curriculum, Amy Yip Ah-May

Special Topics, General

Service-Learning extends the learning process from the classroom to the community, which becomes a supplementary resource to facilitate teaching and learning. This paper uses fragments of reflections to illustrate how Service-Learning course participants learn through the community-service projects and how they feel about their experiences as project leaders. The literature used provides a rich source of data about the meaning of Service-Learning and empirical evidences of the educational effects of learning through serving others. This paper argues that the Hong Kong school curriculum is examination driven and focused on the academic. There is a neglect in the social, moral and …

Law As Language (Reviewing Peter M. Tiersma, Legal Language (1999)), Francis J. Mootz Iii Jan 1999

Law As Language (Reviewing Peter M. Tiersma, Legal Language (1999)), Francis J. Mootz Iii

Scholarly Works

The jacket of Professor Peter Tiersma’s book Legal Language illustrates the problem inherent in a linguistic study of legal language. The jacket features a legal document in fine print, with an overlay of a magnifying glass that brings some of the indecipherable words into focus. The problem, of course, is that a scholar conducting a linguistic study of language does not have access to a distinct "magnifying glass" that can posit language as an object; he can study language only with language.

Tiersma attempts to avoid the most difficult problems of self-reference that follow from the "interpretive turn" in social …

Functional Analysis: Deriving Systems Knowledge From Bibliographic Information Resources, R. Watts, A. Porter, Cherie C. Trumbach

Management Faculty Publications

Analyses of particular technology developments provide vital managerial intelligence. Framing of such analyses is key to maximize their managerial value. This paper presents a case analysis of automotive fuel efficiency technologies, posed as a functional analysis, rather than as a technology analysis. This functional perspective provides a systems frame of reference, yielding enhanced managerial knowledge. The case illustrates the use of bibliometric methods to glean systems intelligence from large abstract databases.

Developing A Twenty-First Century Church With Integration And Integrity, Eddie Gibbs

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

The issue of millennial excitement and apprehension is principally concerned not with the calendar but with the culture, for it so happens that Western societies in general, and North America in particular, are experiencing cultural upheavals of gigantic proportions. These shifts are affecting every area of life, including government, business, the military, as well as the church.

Puerto Rican Family Functioning, Acculturation And Attitudes Toward Family Counseling, Maria Vazquez Jan 1999

Puerto Rican Family Functioning, Acculturation And Attitudes Toward Family Counseling, Maria Vazquez

Open Access Dissertations

Puerto Ricans are the second largest Latino group in this country. Although this is a group whose demographics are changing and will probably be major consumers of counseling services in the near future, there is very little research on Puerto Rican families. A major problem identified in the mental health literature with Latinos is the underutilization of services. This study attempts to explore Puerto Rican family functioning and utilization of family counseling services.

This investigation examines the validity and applicability of the Family Functioning Scale (FFS) using a Principal Components Analysis with varimax rotation with a sample of Puerto Ricans. …

The article presents a good overview of the general issues that impact diverse students such as the institutional climate, admission and selection criteria, academic policies, student support program, curriculum, and law school pedagogy. It provides some concrete suggestions on how law schools can enhance learning. Phonemic Awareness : An Action Research Study, Pamela Miller Jan 1999

Phonemic Awareness : An Action Research Study, Pamela Miller

Graduate Research Papers

This study addresses the issue of phonemic awareness instruction and its effects on reading. Benefits of reading programs that encompass phonemic awareness training and problems with approaches that do not encompass phonemic awareness were discussed as well as benefits and problems associated with both direct phonemic awareness instruction and indirect phonemic awareness instruction. An action research study using Scholastic Phonemic Awareness Kit was conducted and conclusions were drawn from the study and from the literature. Recommendations were made for future phonemic awareness training.
