Utopian Geography Of Estero, Florida, Barbara Hutchings Jan 1999

Utopian Geography Of Estero, Florida, Barbara Hutchings

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This thesis explores the landscape and beliefs of a nineteenth century utopian community, the Koreshan Unity, a group who settled the town of Estero, Florida. This research explains the alternative geography of the Koreshans, a worldview that claimed that we live on the inside of a hollow sphere. Their founder, Dr. Cyrus Teed, created this theory and made it the core of a social structure that also supported celibacy and socialism. I also describe the Koreshan Geodetic Expedition, a survey of the earth's curvature, and how it claimed to use scientific methods to prove the earth's concavity. The history, beliefs, …

Examination Of The Relationship Between Nurses' Learning Preferences And Practices, Kathryn J Chapin Mccarten Jan 1999

Examination Of The Relationship Between Nurses' Learning Preferences And Practices, Kathryn J Chapin Mccarten

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The American Nurses Association supports professional continuing education, of which one part is self-directed learning, as essential for maintaining competency in nursing practice and safety of the consumers of health care. The increasing complexities of nursing practice demand that nurses be continuous life-long learners. Nurses licensed in the State of Florida are mandated to earn professional continuing education credit as a condition of relicensure. Self-directed learning is one option for earning professional continuing education credit. This study investigated readiness for self-directed learning among Florida nurses (registered nurses and licensed practical nurses) using Guglielmino's Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS) and several …

For Peace And Union: Public Opinion And Antiwar Sentiment In The Civil War North, Kevin Lee Kearney Jan 1999

For Peace And Union: Public Opinion And Antiwar Sentiment In The Civil War North, Kevin Lee Kearney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Despite the beliefs of modern Americans, the people of the North did not unanimously support the Civil War. Instead, peace demonstrations and draft dodgers abounded, threatening to undermine public morale. The war confronted the people with a choice between peace and Union. When the war appeared to fail in its objective of restoring the Union the people more readily accepted the idea of a negotiated settlement, but victory restored morale and encouraged them to continue the fight. Ultimately, sentiment for Union overcame the desire for peace, so the North remained committed until it defeated the rebellion.

International Education At The Community College Level: Evaluation Of Levels Of Commitment And Curriculum Integration, Joan Ortega-Cowan Jan 1999

International Education At The Community College Level: Evaluation Of Levels Of Commitment And Curriculum Integration, Joan Ortega-Cowan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

As global interdependency becomes increasingly more apparent in our shrinking world, changing economic conditions draw people of many different cultures closer together. It is crucial that we develop knowledge and understanding of international cultures and countries to initiate and encourage reciprocal commercial and cultural exchange between local community colleges and the global community. Community colleges have an exceptional opportunity to provide effective leadership in order to implement and integrate international education (IE) concepts in their mission statement, goals and curriculum. The ultimate goal should be to institutionalize IE throughout the curriculum, faculty, staff, and student body of all community colleges. …

Larval Release By The Fiddler Crab Uca Thayeri: Timing And Cues Used Under Different Tidal Regimes, Kay Kellmeyer Jan 1999

Larval Release By The Fiddler Crab Uca Thayeri: Timing And Cues Used Under Different Tidal Regimes, Kay Kellmeyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Hatching rhythms of intertidal crabs vary in timing with species, burrow position, tidal regimes and larval vulnerability. Most fiddler crabs time larval release with the nocturnal high fide. This is possible in semidiurnal tidal regimes because there are nocturnal high tides each lunar day. However, mixed tidal regimes have a semidiurnal and a diurnal period. During the diurnal phase high fide occurs in the afternoon. This variation in tidal inundation patterns may influence the timing of larval release. Comparisons between two populations of fiddler crab (Uca thayeri ), exposed to different tidal regimes, indicated they time larval release differently. The …

Leadership On Trial: A Study Of Nelson Mandela's Rhetorical Strategies, Katrika Nordraka Romer-Sterling Jan 1999

Leadership On Trial: A Study Of Nelson Mandela's Rhetorical Strategies, Katrika Nordraka Romer-Sterling

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

For over four decades the Apartheid system in South Africa deprived many black South Africans their right to democracy. However, Nelson Mandela's leadership strategies would prove effective in helping the Anti-Apartheid movement achieve its common goal of universal suffrage for all South Africans. This thesis explores what made Mandela's rhetoric as a leader so effective during his courtroom testimonies from the Treason Trial in 1956 and the Rivonia Trial in 1964. A new model is developed to analyze leadership characteristics: charisma, prophecy, creativity, pragmatism and prophecy proved to be significant strategies in making his leadership rhetoric so effective. The purpose …

Media Literacy And Hegemony: A Textual Analysis Of The Promotional Materials Offered By The Media Literacy Movement, Susan Ellen Holt Jan 1999

Media Literacy And Hegemony: A Textual Analysis Of The Promotional Materials Offered By The Media Literacy Movement, Susan Ellen Holt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

We are living in a society where the commercial imperative of the mass media rather than the public interest is shaping our cultural environment. In response to the deleterious consequences of this phenomenon, many educators, parents, and community and religious groups are promoting the teaching of media literacy. This study looks for signs of hegemonic containment within the Media Literacy Movement, and delineates why an understanding of the political-economic implications of media institutions is vital in developing an effective media literacy program. The study concludes that the diversity found in the promotional texts of the Media Literacy Movement generally reflects …

Otto Jespersen At The "Wake": A Genetic Study Of Linguistic Sources For "Finnegans Wake", Erika. Rosiers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

During the composition process of Finnegans Wake, James Joyce made extensive use of notebooks in which he collected material from miscellaneous sources, crossing out entries and inserting them into his drafts, creating an encyclopedic work of a highly complex nature. Genetic criticism, approaching the literary work as a process rather than a product, examines these sources, notebooks, and drafts to gain insight into the development and meaning of the work. Joyce read and took notes from Otto Jespersen's Language, Its Nature, Development and Origin in 1923, Growth and Structure of the English Language in 1924, and An International Language in …

Origins Of Everglades Drainage In The Progressive Era: Local, State And Federal Cooperation And Conflict, Jeffery Glenn Strickland Jan 1999

Origins Of Everglades Drainage In The Progressive Era: Local, State And Federal Cooperation And Conflict, Jeffery Glenn Strickland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

During the Progressive Era, technical experts--state and independent engineers, United States Department of Agriculture scientists, and United States engineers increasingly influenced drainage and reclamation policy in central and southern Florida. Engineers agreed with the general method of drainage but at times disagreed over engineering specifics. The federal, state and local govemments were aware of the benefits associated with internal improvements, at the same time, however, they frequently fought over their control. Between the mid-nineteenth century and the early 1900s, drainage engineering knowledge and technology increased along with the role of the engineers. As a result, Florida's Progressive Governor Napoleon Bonaparte …

Playing Chomp, Bogumila Wojtowicz Jan 1999

Playing Chomp, Bogumila Wojtowicz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

We investigate the game known as Chomp. This is an example of a combinatorial two-person nim-type game. Like most of games it has very simple rules, but this does not mean that there is a simple strategy to win. With the help of a computer program we present winning strategies for the first player, since P1 always wins. We also show an isomorphism between Chomp and the Divisor Game.

Puzzle Of Transformation: Becoming A Nurse Practitioner, Patricia Mahoney Siccardi Jan 1999

Puzzle Of Transformation: Becoming A Nurse Practitioner, Patricia Mahoney Siccardi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The purpose of this study was to provide introductory knowledge about the value of narrative methods of teaching nurse practitioners and their transition to advanced practice. According to this study, becoming a nurse practitioner requires a paradigm shift. It demands that nurse practitioners remain grounded in nursing and yet, integrate enhanced critical thinking, diagnostic reasoning, and holistic humanistic caring. It was determined that the transition to the nurse practitioner role begins during the formal learning program and continues for several years after graduation. There is a learning curve involved in the transformation. Creating a new identity occurred slowly and incrementally …

Relationship Between Employee Job Satisfaction And Key Customer Outcomes: A Study Among Temporary Workers, Christine M. Hagan Jan 1999

Relationship Between Employee Job Satisfaction And Key Customer Outcomes: A Study Among Temporary Workers, Christine M. Hagan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This dissertation investigates the nature of the relationship that exists between job satisfaction among temporary workers and general customer perceptions of service quality, customer-based appraisal of specific service provider performance, and customers' future behavioral intentions concerning doing business with the firm in the future (e.g., to increase business, to recommend the organization to others, etc.). The Job Descriptive Index (JDI) and its related Job-in-General scale were used to measure employee satisfaction. SERVQUAL was used to gauge general customer perceptions of service quality. A 13-item battery derived from marketing literature was used to measure customer future behavioral intentions. The customer appraisal …

Remote Laboratories For Distance Education, Sudeep Hari Anandapuram Jan 1999

Remote Laboratories For Distance Education, Sudeep Hari Anandapuram

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

In the past few years many US institutions of higher education have established virtual classrooms where learners pursue higher education via the Internet. The true challenge in Distance Education however remains; how do students perform real lab experiments--such as electronics over the Internet? To examine this challenge, a survey was conducted on over fifty Web-based educational environments, to assess the shortcomings of laboratory facilities currently available on the Internet. The survey revealed that contemporary labs touted to be virtual environments are merely software simulations. Hence the new idea of a facility that will realistically provide lab experiments over the Internet. …

Recognition And Analysis Of Secondary Depositional Crusts In The Surficial Aquifer System Of Southeast Florida, Steven Louis Krupa Jan 1999

Recognition And Analysis Of Secondary Depositional Crusts In The Surficial Aquifer System Of Southeast Florida, Steven Louis Krupa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This investigation identified, analyzed, characterized and correlated observed geophysical log "deflections" occurring at distinct depths in the sedimentary sequence and varying systematically with reference to the coastline. The deflections correspond to dense, hard crusts within the upper portions of the Surficial Aquifer System (SAS) of Southeast Florida. These crusts are proposed as zones of paleo-freshwater fluctuations within the aquifer. The secondary depositional crusts (SDC) have migrated vertically in response to sea level changes over thousands of years. Detailed continuous geological samples were collected from three boreholes in a contamination investigation in Delray Beach, Florida. These disturbed but representative samples were …

Smoking Or Not Smoking? A Logit Model Analysis, Mark Wayne Clarke Jan 1999

Smoking Or Not Smoking? A Logit Model Analysis, Mark Wayne Clarke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Since the beginning of President Clinton's administration, the cigarette industry has been under a lot of pressure to change the way they do business, how they advertise. This study was not intended to be for or against the issue of smoking but to see which variable affects smoking after the consumer makes the adult decision to smoke. Three different econometric analyses were used to come up with these results; Logit, OLS and Linear Probability Model. The findings indicate that variables like income, pack per week smoked, age, years smoking and gender are significant in determining if an adult consumer continues …

Constitutional Protection For Conversations Between Therapists And Clients, Paul E. Salamanca Jan 1999

Constitutional Protection For Conversations Between Therapists And Clients, Paul E. Salamanca

Missouri Law Review

People have long perceived a connection between mental and even physical illness and spiritual anguish. Yet, modem culture tends to view both types of illness from an increasingly medical perspective, seeking a genetic or environmental explanation. In most cases, this "medical model" is probably the best approach, even if it is imperfect. First, the purely medical explanation may be accurate. Second, even if it is not accurate, treating the symptoms of a disease with a spiritual source is probably far easier than treating the source itself. Ultimately, however, we must take note that disease is often not the result of …

An Analysis Of Opportunities For Middle And High School Principals To Develop Public Speaking Skills For Effective Educational Leadership, Doris Stahl Agnon Jan 1999

An Analysis Of Opportunities For Middle And High School Principals To Develop Public Speaking Skills For Effective Educational Leadership, Doris Stahl Agnon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Recognized leadership skills generally include communication skills and public speaking ability. Some children develop leadership and public speaking skills early in life. Some high schools and colleges emphasize public speaking. Adults frequently enroll in seminars such as Dale Carnegie programs or join organizations such as Toastmasters International. The researcher's own years of teaching and speaking experience have led her to believe in the potential value of public speaking for children, adults, and leaders in education organizations. Principals must speak competently and professionally. The purpose of this study was to determine how and when secondary school principals learned public speaking skills. …

Data were analyzed by t-test at the .05 significance level. …

Comparison Of Rhetorical Strategies Used To Handle Corporate Crisis Situations In The United States And In Taiwan, Guo-Ping. Yang Jan 1999

Comparison Of Rhetorical Strategies Used To Handle Corporate Crisis Situations In The United States And In Taiwan, Guo-Ping. Yang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Communication is a key element of all business activities during any crisis situation. A company without a crisis management plan can suffer serious difficulties during and after a crisis. A good crisis communication plan cannot solve a crisis, but it can reduce the damage including helping to maintain a positive corporate identity and keeping the normal operation of a company. Four themes (caring, responsibility, honesty, and quick response) relative to crisis communication were examined in the 1987 and 1982 coverage of the Honda Water-Logged Car Crisis and the Tylenol Capsule Poisonings respectively. An investigation of these themes suggests how the …

Comparison Of The Teaching Styles Of Full-Time And Part-Time Community College Faculty, Cynthia Smyth Johnson Jan 1999

Comparison Of The Teaching Styles Of Full-Time And Part-Time Community College Faculty, Cynthia Smyth Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The purpose of this study was to compare the teaching styles of full-time and part-time community college faculty. The Principles of Adult Learning Scale (PALS) and a modification of the PALS for students were used to measure teaching style. The PALS identifies the extent to which an instructor prefers a learner-centered or a teacher-centered style. The sample was comprised of 31 full-time and 42 part-time randomly selected faculty from seven Florida community colleges and 925 students. Six hypotheses were tested. The findings are summarized here: (1) There was a significant difference between full-time and part-time faculty in teaching style as …

De La Conception De L'Europe Dans "La Condition Humaine" D'Andre Malraux, Raymond. Giner Jan 1999

De La Conception De L'Europe Dans "La Condition Humaine" D'Andre Malraux, Raymond. Giner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Although China provides the stage for most of the action of La Condition Humaine, the presence of Europe is felt throughout the text. In this ostensibly historical novel, Malraux dramatizes the tragic events that took place in Shanghai in March and April 1927: a failed coup attempt by marxist revolutionaries and the bloody scission between general Tchang-Kai-Shek's Kuomintang and the communist party. Europe is thus present in the very premises of the story, through marxism. The influence of the Old Continent permeates all the characters in one way or another, even those from Asia, mainly China, who display this influence …

Directive Use In Primary Caregiver-Toddler Dyads: A Comparison Of No Risk And At-Risk Children, Andrea Margaret Babkie Jan 1999

Directive Use In Primary Caregiver-Toddler Dyads: A Comparison Of No Risk And At-Risk Children, Andrea Margaret Babkie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The development of child language within the framework of the family has received increased interest in the past decade. One recent premise is that the use of specific types of language by adults in parent-child dyads affects development. These types of adult language, labeled as directives , are verbal behaviors that communicate to the child that he or she should do, say, or attend to something, and are considered to be related to episodes of joint attention. Posited by this model is that episodes of joint attention lead to greater language development. One type of directive, follow-in, is hypothesized to …

Effect Of Sea Surface Motion On Underwater Communication Systems, Guenael Thomas Strutt Jan 1999

Effect Of Sea Surface Motion On Underwater Communication Systems, Guenael Thomas Strutt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Underwater acoustic communications are significantly affected by time-varying multipath. Time-delays induced by multiple reactors on boundaries can be compensated for through equalization, and good transmission can be achieved. However, soundwaves reflected from moving scatterers on the sea surface undergo slight variations in frequency that significantly degrade the performance of communication devices. Ocean data was collected to evaluate the amount of Doppler-spread induced by wind-driven surface waves. A model for the shallow water acoustic channel is discussed and implemented using a simplified approach to the gaussian-beam ray-tracing algorithm. This leads to the definition of the spreading function, a convenient tool to …

Empirical Investigation Of Uncovered Interest Parity Between The United States And Japan: Cointegration And Causality Tests, Russell Roy Enyart Jan 1999

Empirical Investigation Of Uncovered Interest Parity Between The United States And Japan: Cointegration And Causality Tests, Russell Roy Enyart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This study investigates the existence of Uncovered Interest Parity (UIP) between the United States and Japan. The study is conducted over a 58-month period beginning in January 1994 and continuing through October 1998. This study used unit root, cointegration, and causality tests to examine whether the exchange rates and interest rates of the two countries lent support to the UIP hypothesis. All data sets were found to contain a unit root. Further, there was no evidence for cointegration between the exchange rate and any of the explanatory variables (US interest rates, Japanese interest rates, and the interest rate differential). However, …

Rethinking Statutory Antiwaiver Provisions Following The Lloyd's Of London Litigation, Mark J. Loewenstein Jan 1999

Rethinking Statutory Antiwaiver Provisions Following The Lloyd's Of London Litigation, Mark J. Loewenstein

Publications

In the Lloyd's of London cases, the United States Courts of Appeals upheld certain forum-selection clauses that effectually deprived investors of the protections of the federal securities laws as if the investors had expressly waived those protections. This article examines statutory antiwaiver provisions in light of the Lloyd's cases, exploring the effect those provisions have on the administration of the federal securities laws, and suggests that the law be amended to allow contractual waiver in certain circumstances.
