Embedded Training For Complex Information Systems, Brant A. Cheikes Jan 1999

Embedded Training For Complex Information Systems, Brant A. Cheikes

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

One approach to providing affordable operator training in the workplace is to augment applications with intelligent embedded training systems (ETS). Intelligent embedded training is highly interactive: trainees practice realistic problem-solving tasks on the prime application with guidance and feedback from the training system. This article makes three contributions to the theory and technology of ETS design. First, we describe a framework based on Norman’s “stages of user activity” model for defining the instructional objectives of an ETS. Second, we demonstrate a non-invasive approach to instrumenting software applications, thereby enabling them to collaborate with an ETS. Third, we describe a method …

The Police-Ization Of The Military, Charles J. Dunlap Jr. Jan 1999

The Police-Ization Of The Military, Charles J. Dunlap Jr.

Faculty Scholarship

This essay will briefly review the background of the use of the armed forces in a police capacity, discuss the growth of that role in the I980s and 1990s, and forecast an even greater expansion into that role in the near future due to the emerging threat of "catastrophic terrorism." It will contend that this increased reliance on military resources for policing is not in the interest of either the armed forces or the public. Finally, it will make some observations with a view towards minimizing the dangers of police-ization of the military while ensuring the Nation's public safety.

Rethinking Cost-Benefit Analysis, Matthew D. Adler, Eric A. Posner Jan 1999

Rethinking Cost-Benefit Analysis, Matthew D. Adler, Eric A. Posner

Faculty Scholarship

This paper analyzes cost-benefit analysis from legal, economic, and philosophical perspectives. The traditional defense of cost-benefit analysis is that it maximizes a social welfare function that aggregates unweighted and unrestricted preferences. We follow many economists and philosophers who conclude that this defense is not persuasive. Cost-benefit analysis unavoidably depends on controversial distributive judgments; and the view that the government should maximize the satisfaction of unrestricted preferences is not plausible. However, we disagree with critics who argue that cost-benefit analysis produces morally irrelevant evaluations of projects and should be abandoned. On the contrary, cost-benefit analysis, suitably constrained, is consistent with a …

The Effect Of Different Seed Rates On Yield And Yield Components Of Two Soybean ( Glycine Max. (L.) Merill) Varieties In Kahramanmaras Conditions, H. Ahmet Yilmaz

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study was carried out in Kahramanmaras ecological condition in 1994 and 1995. In this study soybean cv "P. 9442" and "AP 240" were planted at 50, 60 and 70 cm row spaces, and 3, 5 and 7 cm intrarow seed spaces, and the effects of sowing densities on yield and yield components were investigated. The effects of row spaces on numberof branches per plant and, 100 seed weigth, yield per da, and kernel ratio, were significant in both years , on plant height, branche number per plant and yield per da were significant in both years, on branch number …

Genetic Analysis And Gliadin Banding Patterns In Some Bread Wheat Varieties Grown In Turkey And Their Hybrids, Si̇bel Keski̇n, Sevi̇nç Asal, Orhan Kavuncu Jan 1999

Genetic Analysis And Gliadin Banding Patterns In Some Bread Wheat Varieties Grown In Turkey And Their Hybrids, Si̇bel Keski̇n, Sevi̇nç Asal, Orhan Kavuncu

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study, 20 individual kernels of "Gün 91", "Kırkpınar 79", "Atay 85", "Kıraç 66", "Bolal 2973", "Bezostaya 1" and "Gerek 79" bread wheat cultivars that are grown in Turkey and their half diallel F 1 hybrids were analysed using polyacylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) in order to determine gliadin band patterns and to show homogeneity and/or heterogeneity. Result of electrophoretic analysis showed that there is a detectable variation within these cultivars and amongst their hybrids. However the heterogeneity in hybrids was larger than the one in parents. Some bands found in hybrids but not in parents and vice versa have …

Kbbg-Fm: Communicating To Educate, Edward W. Ellis Jr. Jan 1999

Kbbg-Fm: Communicating To Educate, Edward W. Ellis Jr.

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

"KBBG-FM: Communicating to Educate" is a qualitative study conducted to examine an African-American owned and operated, public, listener-supported radio station in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls community in Northeast Iowa. The researcher wanted to study how such a local radio station reaches out to its community. A review of literature revealed since the passage of the 1996 Telecommunications Act, radio has become less and less diversified, harming community localism in radio. Minority ownership of radio has also declined to an even smaller scale than before the 1996 Telecommunications Act. Based on the review of literature, the researcher formed four research questions for …

Effect Of Exterior Exposure On The Hadrness Of Varnishes Coating, Ramazan Özen, Abdullah Sönmez

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Wooden materials have been used for decoration and building element both indoors and outdoors. One of the most important problem in wood finishing has been that naturel appearence of wood and varnish coating couldn't be preserved sufficiently against outdoor effects. In this research, cellulosic, synthetic, acid catalyzed and polyurethan varnishes and synthetic opaque white paint was examined by using on the beech (Fagus orientalis L.), pine (Pinus silvestris L.), oak (Quercus petreae L.), castanea (Castanea sativa M.) wood panels. Experiments was conducted in Ankara. Beginning in 1993 a total of five experimental finishes on the four different panels have been …

Teaching Jewish Law In American Law Schools: An Emerging Development In Law And Religion, Samuel J. Levine

Scholarly Works

In recent years, religion has gained an increasing prominence in both the legal profession and the academy. Through the emergence of the "religious lawyering movement," lawyers and legal scholars have demonstrated the potential relevance of religion to many aspects of lawyering. Likewise, legal scholars have incorporated religious thought into their work through books, law journals and classroom teaching relating to various areas of law and religion. In this Essay, Levine discusses one particular aspect of these efforts, namely, the place of Jewish law in the American law school curriculum. Specifically, he outlines briefly three possible models for a course in …

Judicial Hostility Toward Labor Unions--Applying The Social Background Model To A Celebrated Concern , James J. Brudney, Sara Schiavoni, Deborah J. Merritt

Faculty Scholarship

Brudney, Schiavoni, and Merritt address an important debate dividing lawyers And political scientists: To what extent do extra doctrinal factors such as political party, gender, and professional experience influence judicial decision making? They analyze an area of law, decisions interpreting the National Labor Relations Act, that has long been characterized by assertions of Judicial bias. By including every federal court of appeals decision applying the Act over a seven year period, and controlling for both deference to the administrative agency and differences among issues arising under the Act, the authors are able to identify previously undetected influences on judicial decision …

Innovative medical technology has made it possible to test whether you are at increased risk for certain types of cancer. The mere processing of a vial of blood can reveal whether you have a genetic predisposition to develop breast, ovarian, or prostate cancer, or other life-threatening conditions. The Human Genome Project, an international endeavor seeking to map our genetic structures, has facilitated this increasing ability to test for genetic flaws. It is expected that as the human genetic map is filled in, and as flaws in our fundamental building blocks are identified, there will be a concomitant drive to test …
