See Dick Run: Developing Literacy In Kindergarten, Rachel Moss

The Corinthian

Literacy has become an issue of great importance in our country. Many children have reached middle and high school without the ability to read fluently. Educators have therefore earnestly sought the best method of teaching literacy. Children in younger grades are now being taught beginning language arts skills. Standardized tests have been developed to measure the extent of these skills. Parents are also inquiring about the most effective means of preparing their children for school.

Is The Level Of Teacher Burnout More Significant Among Elementary Special Education Teachers Or Elementary General Education Teachers?, Susie Brandt, Deana Burgess, Debra Watts

The Corinthian

Increases in class size and class mix, a preponderance of students from nontraditional families, lack of student motivation, discipline problems, and the mainstreaming of special needs students in general education classes have contributed to greater demands on teachers in the classroom. As a result of such major changes and demands, teachers are reported to be experiencing higher levels of stress leading to the possibility of burnout.

California's Sexually Violent Predator Act: The Role Of Psychiatrists, Courts, And Medical Determinations In Confining Sex Offenders, Carolyn B. Ramsey Jan 1999

California's Sexually Violent Predator Act: The Role Of Psychiatrists, Courts, And Medical Determinations In Confining Sex Offenders, Carolyn B. Ramsey

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

This article explores tensions between law and psychiatry after the California Supreme Court's affirmation of the Sexually Violent Predator Act ("SVPA")-a statute providing for the involuntary civil commitment of sex offenders at the end of their prison terms. The United States Supreme Court upheld a similar Kansas law in 1997. Following a brief discussion of the SVPA's constitutionality, the article considers three issues in greater detail: (1) the sex offender's right to treatment during civil confinement, (2) potential problems with finding a right to refuse treatment, and (3) the need to reconcile the standard for civil confinement under the SVPA …

A Limnological Assessment Of Russell Pond, Woodstock, New Hampshire, Michael Bailey, Tara Davignon Jan 1999

A Limnological Assessment Of Russell Pond, Woodstock, New Hampshire, Michael Bailey, Tara Davignon

Center for Freshwater Biology

A limnological survey was conducted during 17-18 September, 1998 to characterize the trophic state of Russell Pond, a 15.8 Ha natural Lake located in Woodstock, Grafton County, New Hampshire. Physical, biological and chemical parameters were measured to assess the health of the lake and changes from previous studies. Russell Pond is oligotrophic with high Secchi disk depths (13.8 m), low phosphorus levels (3.8 µg L1) and low Chlorophyll a concentration (0.5 µg L-1). Peridinium (Dinophyceae) dominated (64%) the net phytoplankton. Calanoid copepods (Diaptomidae) constituted 87.5% of the crustacean zooplankton. The lake is at risk for acidification because of low acid …

Attitudes And Perceptions About Ecological Resources And Hazards Of People Living Around The Savannah River Site, Joanna Burger, Jessica Sanchez, J. Whitfield Gibbons, Jeanine Ondrof, Robert Ramos, Michael J. Mcmahon, Karen F. Gaines, Christine Lord, Marie Fullmer, Michael Gochfeld

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

In this paper we examine the attitudes and perceptions about ecological resources of people living around the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site (SRS), in South Carolina. Our overall hypothesis is that people who are directly affected by the possible outcomes and consequences of a particular hazard (i.e., those people employed at SRS) will undervalue the risks and overvalue the potential …
