Ag Day 1998, Robert F. Richard, Bobby Fletcher Jr Feb 1999

Ag Day 1998, Robert F. Richard, Bobby Fletcher Jr

Journal of Extension

The Extension staff in Iberia Parish (County) felt that in spite of having a population that is 44% rural, school children did not fully appreciate the value of agriculture to the parish. With the assistance of the school superintendent, local government and numerous other collaborators an Ag Day program was created for the parishes 1500 third grade students. Hands-on activities were used to supplement lesson plans provided to classroom teachers in a variety of subjects, ranging from food safety to wetlands conservation.

East Asia In Crisis: The Security Implications Of The Collapse Of Economic Institutions, Stephen J. Blank Dr. Feb 1999

East Asia In Crisis: The Security Implications Of The Collapse Of Economic Institutions, Stephen J. Blank Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The challenges to the United States and to its armed forces are numerous and highly significant. Moreover, we must begin to address them now even if other institutions cannot or will not do so with us. Those crises comprise ASEAN's decline as a meaningful security provider, Russia's collapse, Japan's stagnation, South Korea's unresolved democratic transition in economics and politics, Seoul's and Tokyo's inability or growing reluctance to support the 1994 nuclear accord with North Korea, the danger of an unforeseeable crisis emerging in North Korea, and most of all the rise of China with nobody but the United States to …

Development Of A Firefly Luciferase-Based Assay For Determining Antimicrobial Susceptibility Of Mycobacterium Avium Subsp. Paratuberculosis, Stephanie L. Williams, N. Beth Harris, Raul G. Barletta Feb 1999

Development Of A Firefly Luciferase-Based Assay For Determining Antimicrobial Susceptibility Of Mycobacterium Avium Subsp. Paratuberculosis, Stephanie L. Williams, N. Beth Harris, Raul G. Barletta

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Paratuberculosis (Johne’s disease) is a fatal disease of ruminants for which no effective treatment is available. Presently, no drugs against Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (M. paratuberculosis), the causative agent of Johne’s disease, are approved for use in livestock. Additionally, M. paratuberculosis has been linked to a human chronic granulomatous ileitis (Crohn’s disease). To assist in the evaluation of antimicrobial agents with potential activity against M. paratuberculosis, we have developed a firefly luciferase-based assay for the determination of drug susceptibilities. The microorganism used was M. paratuberculosis K-10(pYUB180), a clinical isolate carrying a plasmid with the firefly luciferase gene. …

Levels Of Major Selenoproteins In T Cells Decrease During Hiv Infection And Low Molecular Mass Selenium Compounds Increase, Vadim Gladyshev, Thressa C. Stadtman, Dolph L. Hatfield, Kuan-Teh Jeang Feb 1999

Levels Of Major Selenoproteins In T Cells Decrease During Hiv Infection And Low Molecular Mass Selenium Compounds Increase, Vadim Gladyshev, Thressa C. Stadtman, Dolph L. Hatfield, Kuan-Teh Jeang

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

It has been observed previously that plasma selenium and glutathione levels are subnormal in HIV-infected individuals, and plasma glutathione peroxidase activity is decreased. Under these conditions the survival rate of AIDS patients is reduced significantly. In the present study, using 75Se-labeled human Jurkat T cells, we show that the levels of four 75Se-containing proteins are lower in HIV-infected cell populations than in uninfected cells. These major selenoproteins migrated as 57-, 26-, 21-, and 15-kDa species on SDS/PAGE gels. In our earlier studies, the 57-kDa protein was purified from T cells and identified as a subunit of thioredoxin reductase. …

The Life Cycle Of A Horsehair Worm, Gordius Robustus (Nematomorpha: Gordioidea), Ben Hanelt, John J. Janovy Jr. Feb 1999

The Life Cycle Of A Horsehair Worm, Gordius Robustus (Nematomorpha: Gordioidea), Ben Hanelt, John J. Janovy Jr.

John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications

Aspects of the life cycle of the nematomorph Gordius robustus were investigated. Gordius robustus larvae fed to Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) readily penetrated and subsequently encysted in the posterior portion of the midgut wall. Parasite development was then arrested in each infected beetle. Upon feeding these cysts to laboratory-reared Gryllus firmus. worm larvae developed to adults in the cricket hemocoel. In an additional experiment, G. robustus larvae fed to G. firmus did not develop to adults. These findings are in contrast to other studies that found direct infection to be an alternative mode of infection. This experiment is the …

A Postmortem On The Cigarette Settlement, W. Kip Viscusi Feb 1999

A Postmortem On The Cigarette Settlement, W. Kip Viscusi

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The settlement of the Attorney Generals' suits against the cigarette industry for $206 billion was a landmark outcome. By any standard, the financial stakes were enormous, dwarfing eventhe largest tort liability judgments and punitive damages awards. Moreover, what was especially noteworthy was that the party paying for the costs was the cigarette industry, which to date had been almost unscathed after decades of litigation involving the hazards of smoking... Even more surprising than the enormous amount of the settlement is that any portion is being paid at all to the states. Past research at the national level indicates that cigarettes …

Fas-Fasl Interaction Involved In Pathogenesis Of Ocular Toxoplasmosis In Mice, Mark S. Hu, Joseph D. Schwartzman, Grant R. Yeaman, Jane Collins, Rosanne Seguin, Imtiaz A. Khan, Lloyd H. Kasper

Dartmouth Scholarship

Ocular toxoplasmosis is a potentially blinding intraocular inflammation. The intent of this study was to investigate the role of Fas-FasL interaction in a murine model of acquired ocular toxoplasmosis induced by intracameral inoculation of Toxoplasma gondii. Intraocular inflammation, Fas and FasL expression on lymphocytes and on ocular tissues, the occurrence of apoptosis, and the frequency of CD8+ and CD4+ T cells in the infected eyes were analyzed in C57BL/6 (B6) mice. Susceptibility to parasite-induced intraocular inflammation was observed in Fas-deficient (B6-lpr) and FasL-deficient (B6-gld) mice. Inoculation of 5,000 T. gondii tachyzoites induced significant …

Interaction Between The Mec1-Dependent Dna Synthesis Checkpoint And G1 Cyclin Function In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Elizabeth Ann Vallen, F. R. Cross Feb 1999

Interaction Between The Mec1-Dependent Dna Synthesis Checkpoint And G1 Cyclin Function In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Elizabeth Ann Vallen, F. R. Cross

Biology Faculty Works

The completion of DNA synthesis in yeast is monitored by a checkpoint that requires MEC1 and RAD53. Here we show that deletion of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae G1 cyclins CLN1 and CLN2 suppressed the essential requirement for MEC1 function. Wild-type levels of CLN1 and CLN2, or overexpression of CLN1, CLN2, or CLB5, but not CLN3, killed mec1 strains. We identified RNR1, which encodes a subunit of ribonucleotide reductase, as a high-copy suppressor of the lethality of mec1 GAL1-CLN1. Northern analysis demonstrated that RNR1 expression is reduced by CLN1 or CLN2 overexpression. Because limiting RNR1 expression would be expected to decrease dNTP …

Prefatory Note, Leo Schelbert Feb 1999

Prefatory Note, Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Although the public denunciations of the American media concerning Switzerland's activities during World War Two and the Swiss banks' settling of dormant accounts in the after-years have nearly ceased, the issues raised deserve careful and impartial scrutiny. At the annual meeting of the SAHS Dr. H. Dwight Page, an American, offered an incisive analysis of the events which he expanded into the first article of this issue. As an American and committed Christian he subjects the events in question to rigorous scrutiny and in conclusion offers an intriguing suggestion resulting from his interpretation. He welcomes reactions from readers, be they …

Sovereignty And Suspicion, Erik G. Luna Feb 1999

Sovereignty And Suspicion, Erik G. Luna

Duke Law Journal

Most academics agree that search and seizure jurisprudence is a "mess." Professor Luna proposes a new approach to the Fourth Amendment founded on a sovereignty-based theory of the Constitution. Under this individual rights model, a government search or seizure of an individual's home or body receives the strongest presumption of invalidity. This presumption, he argues, could only be rebutted in three discrete circumstances: (1) consent by the individual to search his home or body; (2) individualized suspicion of wrongdoing; or (3) real, direct, and substantial threats to the sovereignty of other persons. Apart from these exceptions, governmental intrusions into the …

Nevada's High Technology Crime Task Force, Dorinda A. Hollenbeck

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

With the dramatic advances in computer technology in recent decades, the increase of crimes committed using high technology has skyrocketed. Losses to corporations and governmental agencies have totalled millions if not billions of dollars per year. Victims are beginning to speak out and ask for help. Law enforcement agencies throughout the country are teaming together to create specialized crime units and task forces in an attempt to successfully combat computer related crimes. Nevada is one of the many states which is in the infancy stages of developing such a task force. The Sacramento Valley High Tech Crime Task Force has …

Are There Ways To Enhance China's Food Security?, B. Gardner Delworth, Yahui Zhao Feb 1999

Are There Ways To Enhance China's Food Security?, B. Gardner Delworth, Yahui Zhao

Faculty Publications

Chinese officials and newspapers express considerable concern about the country's capacity to feed its huge and still growing population. The rhetoric will be familiar to people in Western countries as a blend of "agrarian fundamentalism" and "Malthusianism." But beyond the official rhetoric, we will argue that reforms in land ownership and irrigation water pricing and management could have highly salutary impacts on agricultural output that could alleviate food shortages far into the future.

Building Community Collaboration For Lead Safety Education: Extension Educators Take The Lead, Martha Lopez, Shirley S. Peterson, Arthur Craigmill, Nestor Martinez Feb 1999

Building Community Collaboration For Lead Safety Education: Extension Educators Take The Lead, Martha Lopez, Shirley S. Peterson, Arthur Craigmill, Nestor Martinez

Journal of Extension

Well-planned partnerships between Extension and community agencies expanded available resources for reaching populations at-risk for lead poisoning. The purpose of the project was to explore the possibilities of training extenders to deliver primary prevention information in Latino communities. The lowering of the baseline for childhood lead burden by the Centers for Disease Control increased the need to educate more families beyond the capability of Extension educators. By using a multicultural curriculum and training approach designed by Cooperative Extension, extenders efficiently and effectively reached a targeted clientele. This partnership model identified and promoted Cooperative Extension as an effective leader for community …

Using Focus Groups To Identify Rural Participant Needs In Balancing Work And Family Education, Stephen F. Duncan, Ramona Marotz-Baden Feb 1999

Using Focus Groups To Identify Rural Participant Needs In Balancing Work And Family Education, Stephen F. Duncan, Ramona Marotz-Baden

Journal of Extension

Marketing emphasizes understanding the target audience as a prelude to or concomitant with program development. This article illustrates how marketing techniques can be used by Extension to develop programs for the expressed needs of a target population. Six focus groups were conducted to learn the balancing work and family needs of rural residents in a Western state. Results provided program developers valuable information on how a program should be produced, priced, promoted, and where it should be held to attract the largest numbers of participants.
