Towards Intelligent Virtual Environment For Training Medical Doctors In Surgical Pain Relief, Richard Alo, Kenneth Alo, Vladik Kreinovich
Towards Intelligent Virtual Environment For Training Medical Doctors In Surgical Pain Relief, Richard Alo, Kenneth Alo, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Chronic pain is a serious health problem affecting millions of people worldwide. Spinal cord stimulation is one of the most effective methods of easing the chronic pain. For most patients, a careful selection of weak electric currents drastically decreases the pain level. Engineering progress leads to more and more flexible devices that offer a wide variety of millions of possible simulation regimes. It is not possible to test all of them on each patient, we need an intelligent method of choosing an appropriate simulation regime. In this paper, we describe the need for an intelligent virtual environment for training medical …

Screening Seniors For Risk Of Functional Decline: Results Of A Survey In Family Practice, Dawn M. Dalby, John W. Sellors, Fred D. Fraser, Catherine Fraser, Cornelia Van Ineveld, Laura Pickard, Michelle Howard
Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications
To measure functional status, determine risk of functional decline and assess consistency between responses and standardized instruments. Design: A mailed survey which measured functional impairment, recent hospitalization and bereavement. A positive response on at least one of these factors indicated that the individual was “at risk” for functional decline. A random sample (n=73) of “at risk” subjects (specifically, family practice patients aged 70 and older) were assessed by a nurse. Results: The response rate was 89% (369/415), 59% of seniors were female and the mean age was 77.1 (SD=5.5) years. Self-reported risk, based on activities of daily living (ADLs), was …

Providing Outpatient Prescription Drugs Through Medicare: Can We Afford To? Can We Afford Not To?, Robin J. Strongin
National Health Policy Forum
The continuing debate over the issue of Medicare coverage for outpatient prescription drugs gave rise to this background paper, which discussed several key questions: Whose responsibility is it to provide coverage? Who should be covered? What should be covered? Who should pay for prescription drug coverage? How should costs be controlled? In addition, the paper explored options for structuring a Medicare outpatient prescription drug benefit. It also contained a glossary.

A Unitary Asean Patent Law In The Aftermath Of Trips, Christian H. Nguyen
A Unitary Asean Patent Law In The Aftermath Of Trips, Christian H. Nguyen
Washington International Law Journal
Members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations ("ASEAN") have come to recognize that rigorous protection for industrial and technological innovations is essential to the economic viability of the Southeast Asian region. This recognition has heightened since the inception of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights ("TRIPs"). TRIPs imposes minimum standards for patent protection upon signatories to the World Trade Organization, which includes most of the ASEAN member countries. Strict compliance with TRIPs standards can severely aggravate the administrative deficiencies in national patent systems, but such deficiencies can be considerably alleviated with the institution of a regional …

Extending The Effectiveness Of Service Mapping, John Bicheno, M R Gopalan, V S Mahesh
IIMB Management Review
In most organisations that offer either a service or a product service bundle to the market, much time is spent on resolving an apparent conflict of interests between achievement of external effectiveness and internal efficiencies in the preparation and delivery of service. Bicheno, Gopalan and Mahesh contend that this apparent conflict can be resolved to a great extent if due care is taken in the use of appropriate tools. They review existing service mapping tools and extensions like Information flow, the Kano model and Failsafing which can be successfully used with existing models. They also propose exploratory extensions using the …
