Orality In Writing: Its Cultural And Political Function In Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, And African-Canadian Poetry, Yaw Adu-Gyamfi Apr 1999

Orality In Writing: Its Cultural And Political Function In Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, And African-Canadian Poetry, Yaw Adu-Gyamfi

Faculty Dissertations

For years, critics have used Black writers' interweaving of African-derived oral textual features and European written forms to reject the concept of the Great Divide between orality and writing in literacy studies. These critics primarily see the hybridized texts of writers of African descent as a model that assists in the complex union of writing and orality. My argument is that the integrationist model is not the only way, perhaps not even the most fruitful way, to read the hybridized texts of writers of African descent. I develop a reading of Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, and African-Canadian literature that sees the …

A Study Of Community Satisfaction, Environmental Concern, And Attitudes Toward Development On Virginia's Eastern Shore, Tasha M. Brown Apr 1999

A Study Of Community Satisfaction, Environmental Concern, And Attitudes Toward Development On Virginia's Eastern Shore, Tasha M. Brown

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

This study assesses community satisfaction, prodevelopment attitudes, environmental concern and intent to move on Virginia's Eastern Shore, an area that is experiencing population decline, high poverty levels, and competing interests of economic development and environmental concern. Poverty levels on the Eastern Shore differ substantially by race with 35 percent of Blacks compared to 12 percent of Whites living in poverty in 1990. Human capital theory suggests that rural residents, and rural minorities in particular, have lower incomes and more unemployment because they are not increasing their human capital through education and training. A review of previous research led to four …

Medicaid Fraud: Medical Students' And Physicians' Attitudes And Perceptions, Kristin M. Byars Apr 1999

Medicaid Fraud: Medical Students' And Physicians' Attitudes And Perceptions, Kristin M. Byars

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to determine the attitudes and perceptions of medical students and physicians concerning Medicaid fraud. The primary tool was an anonymous survey distributed to both medical students and physicians in the Hampton Roads area. Previous research suggests that physicians would be more likely to view Medicaid fraud as less serious and less justifiable than medical students would. Since little research looks specifically at the attitudes and perceptions of medical students and physicians two theories, Differential Association and the Theory of Organizational Misconduct, were used because they best fit the research already out there. The analyses …

A Research Model Of Care-Givers And/Or Socializing Agents Explored In Terms Of Grandparenthood, Susanna Imelda Guadalupe Stephens Apr 1999

A Research Model Of Care-Givers And/Or Socializing Agents Explored In Terms Of Grandparenthood, Susanna Imelda Guadalupe Stephens

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

A collection of secondary (literature) information which revealed the relevant elements and conditions that surround the psychosocial aspects of family kinships were integrated to form the Kin-Psychosocial-Systems Model (KPSS). The KPSS Model is an investigative model (that includes a set of inter-related concepts, definitions, and propositions) which presents a systematic view of family kinships by specifying relationships among culture and family social systems, care-giving and socialization, and psychosocial development for the purpose of providing researchers with a means for explaining and predicting psychological and social phenomena related to the expression and enactment of family kinships.

Cultural Adaptability Of Students Attending Culturally Diverse And Non-Culturally Diverse Dental Hygiene Programs, Katrina White Magee Apr 1999

Cultural Adaptability Of Students Attending Culturally Diverse And Non-Culturally Diverse Dental Hygiene Programs, Katrina White Magee

Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this descriptive investigation was to determine the cultural adaptability of students attending culturally diverse and nonculturally diverse dental hygiene programs throughout the U.S. The dental hygiene schools were identified according to their ethnic diversity as reported by the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation in the 1996-1997 Survey of Dental Hygiene Education Programs. Once the programs were identified, a random sample was taken from the diverse and non-diverse dental hygiene programs. A 50-item inventory, the Cross-Cultural Adaptability Inventory (CCAI), was mailed to the participating dental hygiene programs. One-hundred eighty-eight students represented U.S. dental hygiene programs in the …

Application Of Differential Outcomes To A Cocaine-Saline Discrimination Procedure: Assessment Of Stimulus Generalization To Dopamine D3 Receptor Agonists, Kelly J. Garner Apr 1999

Application Of Differential Outcomes To A Cocaine-Saline Discrimination Procedure: Assessment Of Stimulus Generalization To Dopamine D3 Receptor Agonists, Kelly J. Garner

Masters Theses

This study replicated the effects of differential outcomes on the acquisition of a cocaine-saline discrimination in rats and examined whether learning via differential outcomes (DO) influenced stimulus generalization to other drugs. Previous investigations have suggested that the dopamine (DA) D3 receptor subtype may modulate the reinforcing effects of cocaine. Pharmacological compounds which have been identified as having a greater affinity for DA D3 receptors are 7-OH-DPAT and PD 128907. The present study examined whether the DO conditions applied during training had an impact on the generalization of these test compounds. Two groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained to discriminate …

Three Dimensional Mapping Of The East Leroy And Union City 7.5 Minute Quadrangles In Southwest Michigan, Andrew L. Kozlowski Apr 1999

Three Dimensional Mapping Of The East Leroy And Union City 7.5 Minute Quadrangles In Southwest Michigan, Andrew L. Kozlowski

Masters Theses

A U.S.G.S EDMAP project in Calhoun and Branch Counties Michigan has provided stratigraphic information for hydrologic investigations. The Saginaw Lobe of the Laurentide Ice Sheet impacted the terrain of the study area creating drumlins, tunnel valleys and moraines. Water well records, gamma Ray logs and test wells provided the necessary stratigraphic and hydrogeologic information.

The stratigraphy and hydrogeology of the study area are constrained by the bedrock topography of the Mississippian Coldwater Shale. Drift deposits 13 feet to nearly 200 feet thick comprise the aquifer systems for the study area with thicker and older deposits occupying several bedrock valleys. Drift …

Symposium: Preface, Phillip I. Blumberg Apr 1999

Symposium: Preface, Phillip I. Blumberg

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Anglo-American corporation law has traditionally been bottomed upon the concept that each corporation, like each human being, is a separate juridical person with its own legal rights and duties; this is entity law. This doctrine arose centuries ago and was well suited to deal with the needs of a simpler economic society. It was a time when corporations generally could not own other corporations, and corporate groups with holding companies or parent corporations were unknown. At that time, each corporation was a separate economic enterprise as well as a separate legal entity. This is no longer the case.

Allocating Liability In Corporate Groups: An Australian Perspective, Ian M. Ramsay Apr 1999

Allocating Liability In Corporate Groups: An Australian Perspective, Ian M. Ramsay

Connecticut Journal of International Law

In this article, I provide an Australian perspective on the regulation of corporate groups.3 Australia, like many other countries, still adheres in most respects to entity principles. Some judges have acknowledged the significant difficulties created by adherence to such principles. For example, in Qintex Australia Finance Ltd. v. Schroders Australia Ltd.,4 the legal dispute involved the identification of a particular corporation within a large corporate group, which had purchased a futures exchange contract. Many of the companies in the corporate group were insolvent. The judge commented on the evidence of one of the foreign exchange dealers in the treasury operations …

Criminal Trial Juries In Australia: From Penal Colonies To A Federal Democracy, Michael Chesterman

Law and Contemporary Problems

The recent history of juries in Australia reveals an interesting clash between the endeavours of state and territory governments to reduce the costs associated with jury trial by various means and the determination of the High Court of Australia to reassert the traditional values and features of jury trial.

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

During this symposium the standardization of the nomenclature of Trypanosoma cruzi strains was discussed, in a parallel session, with a view to facilitating the use and understanding of a common nomenclature that would serve not only taxonomists but the general community of researchers working with T. cruzi.

The diversity in the behavior and morphology of T. cruzi isolates was soon recognized after the discovery of Chagas disease. Since then a variety of biochemical and molecular techniques have revealed the great genetic diversity present in strains of this parasite. Different investigators have described this diversity by using various …
