Master's Projects
Last semester, in Fall 1999. the author was doing research in California Reserve Book Room in Martin Luther King. Jr. Main Library' in San Jose, for one of her class projects. There she happened to read some articles about Burbank Neighborhood. One of the articles '‘Burbank residents claim adult theater causes problems" (Mercury' News Sep.29 1993), was about the Burbank area. It was an interesting article. In this article a resident is expressing her protest and anger in a unique way. Readers can see this article later in the report on page 79. The author became interested to know more …
Voluntary Mobile Source Emission Reduction Programs, Barbara Laurenson
Voluntary Mobile Source Emission Reduction Programs, Barbara Laurenson
Master's Projects
As a society we aspire to live in communities with healthy air quality. Achieving this goal is contingent upon contolling many different sources of air pollution. In the past twenty years, the largest sources of air pollution have shifted from easily targeted “smoke stack industries” to difficult to target “mobile sources, Mobile sources, which include automobiles and trucks, are difficult to control because they involve not just the technology that creates the pollution but also how individuals choose to (or are required to) use mobile sources. As a result, controlling these sources of air pollution can be a complex endeavor. …

Jenifer Troxel v. Tommie Granville
On Writ Of Certiorari To The Supreme Court Of Washington
From the Summary of the Argument
The fundamental rights of parents to direct and control the upbringing of their children and the autonomy of the family have been recognized time and again by this Court. These rights and this autonomy are not creatures of positive law, but are grounded in the natural moral order. The family is the "building block" of civil society and has as its natural end, or telos, the nurturing and development of flourishing human persons and good citizens. …

Evaluation Of Sampling Methodologies For Assessing Fish Species Richness In Ridge And Valley Streams In Chattanooga, Tennessee, Evan Robertson Crews
Evaluation Of Sampling Methodologies For Assessing Fish Species Richness In Ridge And Valley Streams In Chattanooga, Tennessee, Evan Robertson Crews
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
I evaluated the adequacy of different electrofishing approaches for estimating species richness in small Ridge and Valley streams. My study objectives were to determine the effects of the sampling season, reach length, habitat sequences surveyed, and sampling intensity on estimates of fish species richness. Fish assemblages were sampled at 18 sites across five streams in the Chattanooga, Tennessee area, May-June (spring) and July-August (summer) 1998. Reach lengths ranged from 103 to 278 m (30 to 61 times the mean stream width [MSW]). At each site, fish were collected using one or two backpack electrofishers within habitat-specific enclosures (riflle-run or pool). …

Effects Of Watershed Land Use On The Benthic Macroinvertebrate Assemblages In Ridge And Valley Streams In Chattanooga, Tennessee, Paul Leiper Freeman
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
A total of 20 sites in five Ridge and Valley streams located in Chattanooga, Tennessee were sampled May 8, 1998 to June 18, 1998 using quantitative and qualitative macroinvertebrate sampling techniques. All streams sampled were part of the Tennessee River drainage system and eventually contribute to Nickajack Reservoir. The 20 sites were second to fourth order streams with drainage areas of 3.8 to 46.9 (km2) and elevations of 195 to 232 (m). Sites with different percentages of agricultural, urbanized and forested land-use were selected to best evaluate the resulting impacts of urbanization and other anthropogenic activities on the invertebrate community …

Liberating Lawyers: Divergent Parallels In Intruder In The Dust And To Kill A Mockingbird, Rob Atkinson
Liberating Lawyers: Divergent Parallels In Intruder In The Dust And To Kill A Mockingbird, Rob Atkinson
Duke Law Journal
Professor Atkinson hopes William Faulkner's Intruder in the Dust will replace Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird as our favorite story of lawyerly virtue. In both stories, a white male lawyer and his protege try to free a black man falsely accused of a capital crime. But below these superficial similarities, Professor Atkinson finds fundamental differences. To Kill a Mockingbird, with its father-knows-best attorney, Atticus Pinch, celebrates lawyerly paternalism; Intruder in the Dust, through its aristocratic black hero, Lucas Beauchamp, and his lay allies, challenges the rule of lawyers, if not law itself The first urges us to serve others …

Urban Problems And The City Of San Jose’S University Neighborhoods Urban Revitalization Plan, Vincent Edward Cantore
Urban Problems And The City Of San Jose’S University Neighborhoods Urban Revitalization Plan, Vincent Edward Cantore
Master's Projects
Over the course of the last 30 years, despite the apparent lack of a coherent national urban policy, and the unfortunate unwillingness of residents to assess themselves the taxes necessary to sustain an acceptable level of neighborhood service, the city of San Jose has arguably never seen brighter moments in its approximate 200 year history than those which it is currently experiencing. In former San Jose Mayor Susan Hammer’s final state of the city speech she takes great pride in touting the strength of San Jose’s economy as well as the ancillary benefits of being the “Capital of Silicon Valley”. …
Self-Esteem: The Impact Of A Course In Growth And Development On Fifth Grade Students, Mary Jang
Self-Esteem: The Impact Of A Course In Growth And Development On Fifth Grade Students, Mary Jang
Master's Projects
Teens in the United States have the highest pregnancy, abortion, and sexually transmitted disease rates among the developed countries. The social and financial costs of teen births are staggering. Research shows that high self-esteem is significantly related to resistance to group pressures, willingness to express unpopular opinions, family adjustment, creativity, and effective communication between parents and youth. The research question is: Will a 5-hour course in growth and development increase the level of self-esteem in fifth grade students? A convenience sample of 20 students (13 girls and 7 boys) who attend a public elementary school in San Jose, California, comprised …

The Chinese Armed Forces In The 21st Century, Larry M. Wortzel Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
This book is a serious look at the armed forces of China and how they will evolve. The chapters in this volume were developed from papers prepared for the eighth in a series of conferences on the People's Liberation Army (PLA). The people at the conferences were recognized experts on armed forces and security matters in China drawn from academia, government, the military, and policy think tanks. Each chapter author was challenged to envision some aspect of the Chinese armed forces into the next century. The goal was to paint a realistic view of how domestic and international pressures would …

The Latency-Related Gene Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Inhibits Programmed Cell Death, Janice Ciacci-Zanella, Melissa Stone, Gail A. Henderson, Clinton J. Jones
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Although viral gene expression occurs in the peripheral nervous system during acute infection, bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) gene expression is extinguished, many neurons survive, and latency ensues. The only abundant viral transcript expressed during latency is the latency-related (LR) RNA, which is alternatively spliced in trigeminal ganglia during acute infection (L. Devireddy and C. Jones, J. Virol. 72:7294–7301, 1998). A subset of neurons express a protein encoded by the LR gene and the LR protein (LRP) is associated with cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (Cdk2)/cyclin complexes during productive infection (Y. Jiang, A. Hossain, M. T. Winkler, T. Holt, A. Doster, and C. …
