A Strategic Model For Investment In Korean Shipping Under The New Liberalisation Treaty, Jin Hwan Kim May 1999

A Strategic Model For Investment In Korean Shipping Under The New Liberalisation Treaty, Jin Hwan Kim

Plymouth Business School Theses

Following trade liberalisation, shipping has been further affected by the world economic environment. Despite arguments as to whether the nature of the shipping industry is a liberalised one or not, it is now clearly seen as the case by the shipping industry itself. The primary goal of this thesis is to examine the attitudes within Korean shipping circles. An empirical study was carried out to evaluate how shipping is being influenced by liberalisation under the new rules, established by the World Trade Organisation and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. The null hypothesis was that there would be no …

The Relationship Of Information Sufficiency To Seeking And Processing Risk Information, Robert J. Griffin, Sharon Dunwoody, Kurt Neuwirth, James K. Giese May 1999

The Relationship Of Information Sufficiency To Seeking And Processing Risk Information, Robert J. Griffin, Sharon Dunwoody, Kurt Neuwirth, James K. Giese

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Based in part on Eagly and Chaiken’s (1993) Heuristic-Systematic model of information processing, we develop and test part of a model that focuses on characteristics of individuals that might predispose them to seek and process information about health and environmental risks in different ways. Specifically, the part of the model being tested proposes that three main predictors —(1) the need for sufficient information to allow one to deal with the risk, (2) one’s perceived personal capacity to acquire needed information, and (3) beliefs about the usefulness of information in various channels — will influence the extent to which a person …

Working Without Rights: Recognizing Housestaff Unionization--An Argument For The Reversal Of "Cedars-Sinai Medical Center And St. Clare's Hospital", Jennifer A. Shorb

Vanderbilt Law Review

Increased competition in today's health care industry has contributed to the industry's growing emphasis on cost-containment. Concerns about this focus on the bottom line have motivated some caregivers to attempt to improve working conditions and the quality of patient care through unionization. One such group, "housestaff' or "house officers," is comprised of hospital interns, residents, and fellows. These individuals are medical school graduates seeking additional training for licensure and specialization. Housestaff are often overworked, underpaid, and forced to deal with working conditions that adversely affect patient care. Such conditions force many house officers to join union organizations and seek the …

Econometric Analysis Of Household Expenditures, Samuel Berhanu May 1999

Econometric Analysis Of Household Expenditures, Samuel Berhanu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

While the traditional methods of measuring income inequality reveals interesting and important features of labor markets, estimates of income inequality do not provide complete summary statistics of the distribution of well-being. Interpreting the Gini coefficient of family earnings as a measure of disparity in welfare implicitly assumes that households with the same level of before tax income are equally well-off. Utility is derived from the consumption of goods and services and there is ample empirical evidence which indicate that the distribution of total expenditure is likely to be different from the distribution of income. As Friedman indicated households with low …

Preference Between Predictable And Unpredictable Administrations Of Carbon Dioxide-Enriched Air, Carl Wilbourne Lejuez May 1999

Preference Between Predictable And Unpredictable Administrations Of Carbon Dioxide-Enriched Air, Carl Wilbourne Lejuez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Predictability of panic attacks has been identified as an important factor in the development, maintenance, and treatment of panic disorder. Although animal studies typically have found a preference for signaled (predictable) over unsignaled (unpredictable) aversive events, results with human participants have been less clear. Because preference for predictability has a wide range of clinical implications, we examined human preference for predictability in a biological challenge paradigm. Further, we examined the differential effects of predictability as a function of anxiety sensitivity and gender. In general, females showed a significantly greater preference for predictability compared to males, as did high anxious participants …

Adult Age Differences In Vocabulary Acquisition As A Function Of Individual Differences In Working Memory And Prior Knowledge, Lisa L. Laumann

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Older adults often complain of cognitive difficulties, such as the inability to learn new information or recall previously learned information. Previous research shows that many older adults do have difficulties with certain learning tasks. However, not all older adults experience these difficulties. Some recent research has shown that, contrary to popular belief, older adults can learn new information under certain task conditions. The purpose of this investigation was to examine how older adults, compared against younger adults, learn new vocabulary under two different learning task conditions. Each participant engaged in two vocabulary learning tasks: a paired-associate task and a contextual …

Evaluation Of A Collaborative Model Using A Case Study Analysis Of Watershed Planning In The Intermountain West, Gary Bentrup

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Planning methods that involve collaboration are gaining popularity and currently being applied in a variety of resource management issues . Based on current planning theory, researchers have proposed a conceptual collaborative model for environmental planning and management . This thesis evaluates the usefulness of the model to describe the range of factors important for the establishment and operation of collaboration in environmental planning. This iterative model suggests that collaboration emerges from a series of antecedents and then proceeds sequentially through problem setting, direction setting, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation phases. The evaluation was based on three case studies of watershed-based …

The Political Realities Of Rio Grande Valley Women, Linda Buxton May 1999

The Political Realities Of Rio Grande Valley Women, Linda Buxton

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The inclusion of minority women in literature on electoral politics is scarce. Although they do exist in this realm, officially and unofficially, their influence has not been a popular topic of study. This study attempts to gain insight into the meaning that politically-active Mexican American women attach to their involvement in politics. The rhetorical criticism approach of fantasy theme analysis has been chosen as the framework for this thesis, which is linked to the general communication theory of symbolic convergence. Responses from 24 in-depth interviews with Mexican American women of Hidalgo County in south Texas were analyzed for common themes …

The Accuracy Of Nitrous Oxide Passive Dosimeters As Compared With An Infra-Red Spectrographic Reference Method, Susan Allen

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

Nitrous oxide is a gas often used in dental, surgical and veterinary operations as an anesthetic agent. Employees stationed in proximity of fugitive gas emissions may potentially suffer adverse health effects from chronic exposure to this agent. Passive dosimeters can be worn in the breathing zone of potentially affected personnel during exposure periods, then later analyzed to quantify nitrous oxide exposure. This study sought to establish the accuracy of several commercially available passive monitoring devices for nitrous oxide by comparison against an infra-red spectrophotometric reference method.

Regulation Of Glucose -6 -Phosphate Dehydrogenase By Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids In Cultured Rat Hepatocytes, Laura Petrosky Stabile

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The goal of this research is to understand the molecular mechanism(s) by which polyunsaturated fatty acids inhibit gene expression of the lipogenic enzymes. The model enzyme which we are using to study this phenomenon is liver glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD). In order to determine if regulation of G6PD occurred at a transcriptional or a posttranscriptional step in rat hepatocytes, enzyme activity, mRNA accumulation and transcriptional activity of the G6PD gene were measured in the presence and absence of a polyunsaturated fatty acid, arachidonic acid. Insulin and glucose stimulated a 5- to 7-fold increase in G6PD activity and mRNA. This increase was …
