Prevalence And Possible Causes Of Vitamin B-6 Deficiency Among Women In The Philippines, Siew Sun Wong May 1999

Prevalence And Possible Causes Of Vitamin B-6 Deficiency Among Women In The Philippines, Siew Sun Wong

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Recently maternal intake of multivitamins has been associated with a reduced risk of orofacial clefts (OFC) in human epidemiologic studies. In the Philippines, vitamin B-6 deficiency was found to be associated with increased risk of OFCs. The birth prevalence of OFCs in the Philippines is among the highest known, but Filipino emigrants in the United States have lower rates, indicating that environmental factors may play an important role in causing OFCs in the Philippines.

The prevalence and possible causes of vitamin B-6 deficiency were investigated through dietary and biochemical assessments in case-control study in Negros Occidental, Philippines. Mothers with OFC …

The News Coverage Of Nigeria By Christian Science Monitor, New York Times And The Times Of London, David Obi Akubukwe

Theses (Pre-2016)

There has been argument about imbalances in the international news flow and presentation, and the dominance of the Western news agencies. And it has also been observed that the Third World countries' news events were under-reported by the Western media. Moreover, most of the scanty news events reported were negative. The purpose of the study was to examine the news coverage of Nigeria by Christian Science Monitor (CSM), New York Times (NYT), and The Times of London (TTL) from January-December, 1985-1995. Rather Than Face That Place Again: Care-Seeking As A Factor In Maternal Mortality Among Mayan Women In Guatemala, Erin Finley May 1999

Rather Than Face That Place Again: Care-Seeking As A Factor In Maternal Mortality Among Mayan Women In Guatemala, Erin Finley

Southern Anthropologist

Some 72 percent of indigenous Mayan women in Guatemala, most of whom live in rural areas far from either a hospital or a clinic like Ixmucane, go to a comadrona, a traditional birth attendant (TBA). for obstetric care (MotherCare 1997). In a country that has the third highest rate of maternal mortality in the Western Hemisphere, comadronas are often the most accessible and affordable health-care providers for pregnant women. These comadronas save lives; Mayan maternal mortality rates drop from 3,539 deaths of 100,000 live births, among women who have only their families to attend them, to 146.3 out of 100,000 …

The Value Of Independence In Old Age, Paula C. Carder May 1999

The Value Of Independence In Old Age, Paula C. Carder

Dissertations and Theses

Why is independence a central theme for proponents of assisted living facilities? How do assisted living providers respond to this theme? These questions are pursued in an ethnographic study centered on Oregon's assisted living program. Assisted living facilities (ALF), defined and monitored by Oregon's Senior and Disabled Services Division (SDSD), are a type of housing for disabled, primarily elderly, persons. Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR-411-56) define independence, requiring ALF providers to support resident independence.

Using social worlds theory as a sensitizing concept, assisted living is treated as a distinct social world. The activities of key groups, including SDSD staff, an ALF …

Pyoveridine Production By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Exposed To Metals Or An Oxidative Stress Agent, Kim-Hien Thi Dao, Katherine E. Hamer, Christine L. Clark, Lawrence G. Harshman May 1999

Pyoveridine Production By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Exposed To Metals Or An Oxidative Stress Agent, Kim-Hien Thi Dao, Katherine E. Hamer, Christine L. Clark, Lawrence G. Harshman

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Siderophores are low molecular mass compounds used by many microorganisms to scavenge dissolved iron, which is typically rare in environments. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PAO1) was exposed to metals and methyl viologen in low-iron medium in order to monitor the abundance of a specific siderophore (pyoverdine) and monitor growth over time. In this study it was discovered that cadmium can stimulate pyoverdine abundance. Cadmium may interact with and sequester the Fur regulatory protein, which represses siderophore synthesis under conditions of iron sufficiency. Mercury did not stimulate pyoverdine production at concentrations that strongly inhibited bacterial growth, suggesting that pyoverdine production is not governed …

Also identified were aspects of the rehabilitation program perceived by the women as assisting them to maintain abstinence from substance use. Data were collected through a demographic questionnaire and a tool designed by the authors based on the Social Stress Model of Substance Abuse (Lindenberg, Gendrop, & Reiskin, 1993) and the literature of social support. The majority of the women were satisfied with their social support from family and friends. Sixty-seven percent of the women felt …

Housing For Senior Citizens In Malaysia, Rugayah Ag. Besar

Master's Projects

Housing is one of the crucial issues in most of the countries. Housing or homes for senior citizens was established in the developed or western countries in the 1950s, and began in the developing countries in the 1980s. In Malaysia, various programs and housing policies were introduced for senior citizens in the early 1990s. Both government and private agencies in this country contribute in developing better housing designs and facilities for senior citizens in the form of institutions or homes. These institutions are normally occupied by the senior citizens who are not only poor but also unable to look after …

Transportation System In Malaysian Rural Areas, Hamidah Yusof May 1999

Transportation System In Malaysian Rural Areas, Hamidah Yusof

Master's Projects

This study aims to generate an empirical transportation model to facilitate and improve mobility in the rural areas of Malaysia. Mobility is a catalyst for economic and social development of the rural areas. Residents in the villages face two main problems: limited public transportation services and minimum goods transportation facilities. The number of passenger trips and trips for transporting goods is still at a minimum level which affects the planning of better transportation systems. Private companies and operators are not interested in investing in public transportation services as profits are uncertain.

Three villages in Malaysia have been selected for the …
