Regulation Of Synthesis And Actions Of Bone Growth Factors, Rashmi Malpe
Regulation Of Synthesis And Actions Of Bone Growth Factors, Rashmi Malpe
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Among the many bone growth factors, this study focused on the IGF and BMP systems because of some of their unique functions, namely, IGFs function both as local and systemic agents and BMPs are capable of inducing de novo bone formation at non-skeletal sites. There is varied osteoblast differentiation in and load bearing on the skeletal system which led to the first study whose hypothesis was that these skeletal site dependent differences are associated with site-specific differences in IGF system components' production. Results from their quantitation in the CM of normal HBC derived from calvaria, mandibles, ribs, vertebrae, and marrow …
Engineering Secreted Proteins For Gene Transfer And Dna Vaccination, Jingxue Liu
Engineering Secreted Proteins For Gene Transfer And Dna Vaccination, Jingxue Liu
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
In recent years gene therapy has become a promising way of alleviating incurable human ailments, its concept emerging as the ultimate therapy for many infectious and genetic diseases. Two important aspects of the development of successful gene therapy protocols are the ability to monitor gene transfer readily, and the establishment of new protocols for treating specific diseases. In this work, Renilla luciferase and human glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) 65 were engineered for secretion to address some aspects of these issues.
Secreted reporter proteins are promising tools to study gene transfer and expression in a non-destructive manner, and bioluminescent proteins are …
Evaluation Of The Effects Of Heat Treatment Using Orthotherm On Thermally Activated Archwires, Brent J. Hurst
Evaluation Of The Effects Of Heat Treatment Using Orthotherm On Thermally Activated Archwires, Brent J. Hurst
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of heat treatment on thermally activated nickel titanium archwires, and to determine the differences between wires from individual manufacturers. Thermally activated, nickel titanium wires were obtained from five different manufacturers in the 0.016 x 0.022 format. All wires were measured with a micrometer to determine their exact dimensions. Half of the wires were heat treated with the use of the Orthotherm Bending Art Programmer from Syrinx Medical Technologies (Berlin, Germany) while the other half served as a control. By passing an electrical current through the wires for a predetermined period …

The Effect Of Tai Chi Chuan For Developing And Maintaining Cardiorespiratory Function In Middle-Aged And Elderly Individuals, Ching Lan, Jin-Shin Lai, May-Kuen Wong
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
A series of studies was designed to investigate the effect of Tai Chi Chuan for developing and maintaining cardiorespiratory function in elderly individuals. In the cross-sectional studies, cardiorespiratory function of 90 middle-aged (range 50-64 yrs) and 76 elderly (range 65-80 yrs) subjects were tested by cycle ergometry. The TCC group practiced TCC with a mean duration of 9.1±4.3 yrs. The control group consisted of 84 sedentary subjects. The VO2max of the TCC group was 15.6-26.8% higher than that of the control group. The result implied that TCC was beneficial for the cardiorespiratory function in the middle-aged and elderly individuals. In the …

Evaluation Of A Novel Exercise Training Program For Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Tyng-Guey Wang, Ssu-Yuan Chen, Shu-Fang Hsiao, Kuang-Hua Lin, Shou-Hsing Kuo, I-Nan Lien
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
This study evaluated a novel exercise training program for the individuals diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.Although sixteen patients (M:13; F:3) with moderate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease participated in this study, only six completed the training programs. Cycle ergometry was used to test and train the patients. The training was performed three times weekly and lasted three months, with each training section lasting 30 to 40 minutes. As obtained from cycle ergometry, the training intensity accounted for 40 %, 60%, and 80% of the maximum work rate in the first two weeks, the following 3 to 6 weeks. and the …

Growth Analysis For Cost Of Rehabilitation Service Under The National Health Insurance Program In Taiwan, Mu-Jung Kao, Mei-Wen Tsai, Mau-Roung Lin, Ming-Chuan Lin, Tyne-Guey Wang, Jin-Shin Lai
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
This study analyzes the structure and trends of costs associated with rehabilitation services under the National Health Insurance program. Statistical analysis was performed for costs associated with in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation services in northern Taiwan. 86.97% to 88.07% of total six-month costs were declared for out-patients. Most of the moderate items for physical therapy and occupational therapy were prescribed for out-patients. In contrast, most of the complicated items for physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy were done for in-patients, especially at medical centers. Comparing the period from January to June of 1998 with the same period of 1997, six-month …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
A total of 54 Streptococcus suis (S. suis) strains were isolated from 48 deceased pigs submitted for routine post mortem examination at the National Institute of Animal Health over a period of 1992-1995. The most isolations were from cases of meningitis and the less frequent ones were from septicemia, pneumonia, meningitis associated with pneumonia and abortion. A few strains were found in cases of arthritis, vaginitis, and abcessation. The age of pigs with meningitis was predominantly 4 - 8 weeks, while pigs with pneumonia were 5- 12 weeks old. Septicemia cases were usually seen in pigs aged 2 -14 weeks. …

Interruption Of Multiple Cellular Processes In Ht-29 Epithelial Cells By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Exoenzyme S, Joan C. Olson, Jennifer E. Fraylick, Eileen M. Mcguffie, Katherine M. Dolan, Timothy L. Yahr, Dara W. Frank, Timothy S. Vincent
Dartmouth Scholarship
Exoenzyme S (ExoS), an ADP-ribosylating enzyme produced by the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is directly translocated into eukaryotic cells by bacterial contact. Within the cell, ExoS ADP-ribosylates the cell signaling protein Ras and causes inhibition of DNA synthesis and alterations in cytoskeletal structure. To further understand the interrelationship of the different cellular effects of ExoS, functional analyses were performed on HT-29 epithelial cells after exposure to ExoS-producing P. aeruginosa 388 and the non-ExoS-producing strain 388DeltaS. Two different mechanisms of morphological alteration were identified: (i) a more-transient and less-severe cell rounding caused by the non-ExoS-producing strain 388DeltaS and (ii) a more-severe, …

Cadmium, Chromium And Lead In Environmental Samples : Speciation And Determination, Hsing-Hui Yu
Cadmium, Chromium And Lead In Environmental Samples : Speciation And Determination, Hsing-Hui Yu
Dissertations
Heavy metals are important contaminants in many environmental media. This work focuses on the improvement of current methods for water and sediment analysis for three metals, cadmium, chromium and lead. Batch ion exchange was used for water speciation and a microwave assisted sequential extraction scheme was developed for sediment characterization. The developed methods were applied to a group of environmental samples.
The exchangeable species of these metals in water were preconcentrated on ion exchange resins. These include the bioavailable free ions and weakly complexed ions. Metals sorbed on particles and strongly complexed ions, less bioavailable, were eliminated. The method was …
