Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 1998-99, Bruce Johnson, Brandon G.Y. Raddatz Jun 1999

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 1998-99, Bruce Johnson, Brandon G.Y. Raddatz

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports

After 11 consecutive years of value increases, Nebraska agricultural real estate values experienced modest declines during the year ending February 1, 1999. According to the UNL Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments Survey, values fell an average of 2.8 percent from year-earlier levels. As the year 1998 developed into an income-shortfall year across virtually all of the state's agricultural sector, it was almost inevitable that a more cautious market attitude would exist and land values decline. In fact, for many market observers, the surprise was not that early 1999 values were down, but rather that the value decrease was generally …

The Quality Of Life Of Rural Nebraskans, John C. Allen, Rebecca Filkins, Sam Cordes

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

Nebraska’s economy has shown growth during recent years. However, the agricultural economy has been experiencing a decline in market prices for most commodities. How have these changes affected rural Nebraskans? How do they perceive their quality of life? Do their perceptions differ by the size of their community, the region in which they live, or their occupation?

This report details results of 3,036 responses to the 1999 Nebraska Rural Poll, the fourth annual effort to take the pulse of rural Nebraskans. Respondents were asked a series of questions about their general well-being and their satisfaction with specific aspects of well-being. …

The Life Of Aleksandr Men': Hagiography In The Making, Janet M. Wehrle Jun 1999

The Life Of Aleksandr Men': Hagiography In The Making, Janet M. Wehrle

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Hagiography is not an extinct genre in Russian literature, even though many believe that it was important in the history of early Russian literature but became irrelevant as Russian literature entered its modem period. The autobiography of priest A vvakum, written in the second half of the seventeenth century, is often considered to be the final work in the development of Russian hagiography. Russian spirituality has not died out, however, and holy men and women continue to display the same devotion to Christ that was admired in medieval saints. The biographies and memoirs of these modem "saints" retain some of …

Identification Of Quantitative Trait Loci Influencing Traits Related To Energy Balance In Selection And Inbred Lines Of Mice, D. E. Moody, Daniel Pomp, Merlyn K. Nielsen, L. Dale Van Vleck Jun 1999

Identification Of Quantitative Trait Loci Influencing Traits Related To Energy Balance In Selection And Inbred Lines Of Mice, D. E. Moody, Daniel Pomp, Merlyn K. Nielsen, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Energy balance is a complex trait with relevance to the study of human obesity and maintenance energy requirements of livestock. The objective of this study was to identify, using unique mouse models, quantitative trait loci (QTL) influencing traits that contribute to variation in energy balance. Two F2 resource populations were created from lines of mice differing in heat loss measured by direct calorimetry as an indicator of energy expenditure. The HB F2 resource population originated from a cross between a noninbred line selected for high heat loss and an inbred line with low heat loss. Evidence for significant …

The Chinese Revision And The Norm Development Of Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery, Nai-Wen Guo, Li-Fa Yu, Hsiu-Chin Pan, Yu-Hsin Wu, Ting-Yu Lin

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery (LNNB) is a comprehensive assessment system based on Luria's theory of functional systems of the brain. It remains as the most popular neuropsychological battery across different cultures in past 20 years. This study was to develop a standardized Chinese version of the LNNB on the basis of Luria's theory and the critics' viewpoints. The study have four objectives: (1) to translate and adapt the original test battery into the Chinese language, (2) to conduct item analysis and convert raw scores to scale scores, (3) to establish local norm and total critical level prediction formula, and to …

Diagnosis Of Meniscus Lesion Of The Knee By High-Resolution Ultrasound, Tai-Wei Yu, Tyng-Guey Wang, Jeng-Yi Shieh, Chung-Li Wang, Ching-Chuan Jiang, Fon-Jou Hsieh Jun 1999

Diagnosis Of Meniscus Lesion Of The Knee By High-Resolution Ultrasound, Tai-Wei Yu, Tyng-Guey Wang, Jeng-Yi Shieh, Chung-Li Wang, Ching-Chuan Jiang, Fon-Jou Hsieh

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Sonography (US) of the knee has gained in significance in the diagnosis of the meniscal injuries. In order to evaluate the diagnostic capabilities of US in meniscal lesions of the knee, 112 patients with suspected knee injury over a period of six months were studied with high-resolution US equipped with a 10 MHz linear transducer. Eighteen of them also received arthroscopy or magnetic resonance imaging, as a gold standard for detecting the meniscal lesion. The normal image of the meniscus in US appeared as a homogenous echogenic to hypoechoic triangle with the tip inward to the interior joint. A smooth …

Adult Intramedullary Anaplastic Astrocytoma In The Spinal Cord: A Casereport, Liang-Cheng Chen, Kao-Chung Tsai, Fu-Kong Lieu Jun 1999

Adult Intramedullary Anaplastic Astrocytoma In The Spinal Cord: A Casereport, Liang-Cheng Chen, Kao-Chung Tsai, Fu-Kong Lieu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Adult anaplastic astrocytomas comprise a small subset of intramedullary spinal cord tumors and carry a dismal prognosis. Characteristically, a short prodrome occurs only several weeks before diagnosis, followed by progressive neurological deterioration and death. This article describes a 48-year-old male patient suffering from lower back pain with radiculagia and progressive weakness of both lower limbs for 5 months. The patient was initially diagnosed as having a lower lumbarintervertebral disc herniation and underwent laminectomy with spinal rods instrumentation two months following the diagnosis. The symptoms gradually worsened and cauda equina syndrome developed thereafter. Two months later, a second subtotal cytoreductive surgery …

Functional Improvement Of Upper Extremity In Cervical Spinal Cord Injured Patient After Tendon Transfer : A Casereport, Chih-Kuang Chen, Fuk-Tan Tang, Meao-Ming Chen, Ngok-Kiu Chu Jun 1999

Functional Improvement Of Upper Extremity In Cervical Spinal Cord Injured Patient After Tendon Transfer : A Casereport, Chih-Kuang Chen, Fuk-Tan Tang, Meao-Ming Chen, Ngok-Kiu Chu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Traumatic tetraplegia is a devastating malady caused by cervical spinal cord injury, leading to motor and sensory impairment of the four limbs. Loss of the upper extremities function severely impacts life quality of the victim. Early and comprehensive rehabilitation can provide good functional recovery and prevent long-term complications. Furthermore, the advanced reconstructive hand surgery that has been developed in the past two decades has become a viable alternative to enhance the function of paralyzed upper extremities. However, this surgical procedure is still rarely performed on tetraplegic patients in Taiwan. This article describes a cervical spinal cord injured patient receiving a …

Insertional Inactivation Of Treponema Denticola Tap1 Results In A Nonmotile Mutant With Elongated Flagellar Hooks, Ronald J. Limberger, Linda L. Slivienski, Jacques Izard, William A. Samsonoff Jun 1999

Insertional Inactivation Of Treponema Denticola Tap1 Results In A Nonmotile Mutant With Elongated Flagellar Hooks, Ronald J. Limberger, Linda L. Slivienski, Jacques Izard, William A. Samsonoff

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

The treponemal fla operon is comprised of numerous motility-related genes; however, the initial gene of this operon, tap1, has no known function. A recently developed system to generate specific mutants in Treponema denticola was utilized to determine if Tap1 was essential for motility. T. denticola tap1 and flanking DNA were identified, cloned, and sequenced, and a suicide plasmid that contained tap1 interrupted with an erythromycin resistance cassette (ermF and ermAM) was constructed. Because of potential polar effects from this cassette, a second plasmid that contained tap1 interrupted with a modified erythromycin resistance cassette that lacked the putative ermF transcription …
