The Americans With Disabilities Act: Implications For Managed Care For Persons With Mental Illness And Addiction Disorders, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Joel B. Teitelbaum, Robert Silverstein

Health Policy and Management Issue Briefs

This Issue Brief, prepared for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, examines the Americans with Disabilities Act ("the ADA") and its application to managed care. The ADA provides important protections for persons with disabilities who are members of managed care arrangements, regardless of whether their membership is sponsored by an employer, Medicare, or Medicaid or is purchased privately. The interaction between the ADA and managed care is complex, and different issues can arise under publicly and privately sponsored plans.

Investigating Ground And Surface Water In The Republican River Basin Of Nebraska Using Water Chemistry And Environmental Isotopes, Jennifer J. Schellpeper Dec 1999

Investigating Ground And Surface Water In The Republican River Basin Of Nebraska Using Water Chemistry And Environmental Isotopes, Jennifer J. Schellpeper

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Recent legal battles concerning water use initiated an investigation of the stream/aquifer relationships in the Republican River Basin located in southwest Nebraska. Ground and surface water was analyzed for tritium, deuterium, 18O, and major ions. Temperature, pH, conductivity and alkalinity were determined on-site. Samples were collected during 1997 and 1998 from irrigation wells throughout the entire basin. Localized interactions between groundwater and surface water were examined during twenty-four hour pump tests performed on the irrigation wells screened in the alluvium along the river valley and its tributaries. These data show there are differences between the ground and surface waters …

Aging And Attentional Control In The Stroop Priming Task, Jennifer Naylor Dec 1999

Aging And Attentional Control In The Stroop Priming Task, Jennifer Naylor

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This experiment was conducted to examine whether older adults are capable of developing attentional strategies to reduce interference from irrelevant information. Sixty young and 60 older adults were asked to name the ink color of a non-black neutral word, which was presented adjacent to a color word or a neutral word (Lowe & Mitterer, 1982). Twelve young and 12 older adults were assigned to 1 of 5 list compositions. The first list consisted of 100% congruent items (ink color of a neutral word compatible with the color word), and 0% incongruent items (ink color of a neutral word incompatible with …

Screening For Mutants In The Output Pathway Of The Circadian Clock In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Wei Yuan Dec 1999

Screening For Mutants In The Output Pathway Of The Circadian Clock In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Wei Yuan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The circadian clock is a basic component of biological systems and has been found in many organisms. It is composed by three major components: the input pathway, the oscillator and the output pathway. The purpose of this research is to study the output pathway of the circadian clock in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii strain Carnil by screening mutants, which were generated by insertional mutagenesis via glass bead transformation. The plasmid pSP124S containing the ble marker was used to introduce mutations. The CABII-1 gene has been reported to show a circadian rhythm in expression. The reporter gene ARS2 that was transcriptionally fused to …

Molecular Evidence For A New Bacteriophage Of Borrelia Burgdorferi, Christian H. Eggers, D. Scott Samuels Dec 1999

Molecular Evidence For A New Bacteriophage Of Borrelia Burgdorferi, Christian H. Eggers, D. Scott Samuels

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

We have recovered a DNase-protected, chloroform-resistant molecule of DNA from the cell-free supernatant of a Borrelia burgdorferi culture. The DNA is a 32-kb double-stranded linear molecule that is derived from the 32-kb circular plasmids (cp32s) of the B. burgdorferi genome. Electron microscopy of samples from which the 32-kb DNA molecule was purified revealed bacteriophage particles. The bacteriophage has a polyhedral head with a diameter of 55 nm and appears to have a simple 100-nm-long tail. The phage is produced constitutively at low levels from growing cultures of some B. burgdorferi strains and is inducible to higher levels with 10 mu …

Exploring Effects Of School Sport Experiences On Sport Participation In Later Life, James Curtis, William Mcteer, Philip White Dec 1999

Exploring Effects Of School Sport Experiences On Sport Participation In Later Life, James Curtis, William Mcteer, Philip White

Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications

This paper presents findings on the relationship between high school sport participation and involvement in sport as adults. The data are provided by a survey of a large representative national sample of adult Canadians. For different age subgroups among women and men, we tested the school sport experiences hypothesis that sport involvement during the high school years contributes to later adult involvement in sport. The measurement of sport involvement in the high school years is concerned with intramural and inter-school activities. Adult sport activity has three measures: sport involvement per se, involvement in an organized setting, and competitive involvement. …

Regional Analysis Of Human Development In Canada, Srimanta Mohant Dec 1999

Regional Analysis Of Human Development In Canada, Srimanta Mohant

PSC Discussion Papers Series

Regional imbalances in development occur in most societies. This study is an example of comparing human development across the provinces of Canada. The study has four directions of emphasis: education, economy, health, and society. In this study seventeen variables are investigated, which reflect the various dimensions of human development. These variables are aggregate in nature. Using the taxonomic method, the variations among the provinces are examined. The analysis reveals that British Columbia has the highest scores and Newfoundland has the lowest scores on the human development index. The results also show the aspects of human development that are not satisfactory …

Introduction To General Field Procedures (Field Manual Of Wildlife Diseases), J. Christian Franson, Milton Friend, Dale E. Toweill, Robert L. Brownell Jr., Victor F. Nettles, Donald S. Davis, William J. Foreyt

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Section 1 of the Manual provides basic information regarding general field procedures for responding to wildlife disease events. Field biologists provide a critical linkage in disease diagnostic work and greatly affect the outcome of the laboratory efforts by the quality of the materials and information that they provide. The chapters in this section are oriented towards providing guidance that will assist field biologists in gathering the quality of information and specimens that are needed. Readers will find information regarding what to record and how; guidance for specimen collection, preservation, and shipment; and how to apply euthanasia when such actions are …

Bacterial Diseases (Field Manual Of Wildlife Diseases), Milton Friend Dec 1999

Bacterial Diseases (Field Manual Of Wildlife Diseases), Milton Friend

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Diseases caused by bacteria are a more common cause of mortality in wild birds than are those caused by viruses. In addition to infection, some bacteria cause disease as a result of potent toxins that they produce. Bacteria of the genus Clostridium are responsible for more wild bird deaths than are other disease agents. Clostridium botulinum, which causes avian botulism, is primarily a form of food poisoning and it is included within the section on biotoxins (see Chapter 38). Other Clostridium sp. that colonize intestinal tissues produce toxins that cause severe hemorrhaging of the intestine, thus leading to tissue …

Viral Diseases (Field Manual Of Wildlife Diseases), Douglas E. Docherty Dec 1999

Viral Diseases (Field Manual Of Wildlife Diseases), Douglas E. Docherty

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Historically, viral diseases have not been recognized as major causes of illness and death in North American wild birds. Until relatively recently, this may have been due to inadequate technology to culture and identify these organisms. Unlike bacteria, viruses are too small to be seen under the light microscope and they cannot be grown on artificial media. Nevertheless, studies of infectious diseases caused by viruses have often predated discovery of the causative agents by many years as evidenced by smallpox immunizations being used centuries before that virus was identified. The isolations of a tobacco mosaic virus in 1892 and foot …

Miscellaneous Diseases (Field Manual Of Wildlife Diseases), Milton Friend, Nancy J. Thomas Dec 1999

Miscellaneous Diseases (Field Manual Of Wildlife Diseases), Milton Friend, Nancy J. Thomas

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

The fact that “Nature is far from benign” is clearly evident from the preceding chapters of this Manual. The diseases and other conditions described are the proverbial “tip of the iceberg” relative to the number of specific causes of ill health and death for free-ranging wild birds, but the wild bird health problems described account for most major wild bird disease conditions seen within the United States. However, the full toll from disease involves many other causes of illness and death that individually may cause substantial die-offs. Two examples of these other causes of die-offs are the deaths of Canada …
