Intracellular Reactive Oxygen Species Mediate The Linkage Of Na+/K+-Atpase To Hypertrophy And Its Marker Genes In Cardiac Myocytes, Joseph I. Shapiro, Amir Askari, Zijian Xie, Peter Kometiani, Jie Li, Jiang Liu
Pharmaceutical Science and Research
We showed before that in cardiac myocytes partial inhibition of Na+/K+-ATPase by nontoxic concentrations of ouabain causes hypertrophy and transcriptional regulations of growth-related marker genes through multiple Ca2+-dependent signal pathways many of which involve Ras and p42/44 mitogen-activated protein kinases. The aim of this work was to explore the roles of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in these ouabain-initiated pathways. Ouabain caused a rapid generation of ROS within the myocytes that was prevented by preexposure of cells to N-acetylcysteine (NAC) or vitamin E. These antioxidants also blocked or attenuated the following actions of …

Crowding-Out And Crowding-In Effects Of The Components Of Government Expenditure, Habib Ahmed, Stephen M. Miller
Economics Working Papers
We examine the effects of disaggregated government expenditure on investment using fixed- and random-effect methods. Using the government budget constraint, we explore the effects of tax- and debt-financed expenditure for the full sample, and for sub-samples of developed and developing countries. In general, tax-financed government expenditure crowds out more investment than debt-financed expenditure. Expenditure on social security and welfare reduces investment in all samples while expenditure on transport and communication induces private investment in developing countries.

The Rise And Fall Of African American Midwifery In The South, Nicole M. Bernard
The Rise And Fall Of African American Midwifery In The South, Nicole M. Bernard
Electronic Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to give insight into the role played by the African American midwife in the rural south, including Louisiana, Alabama, Texas, and Florida. The African American midwife was responsible for prenatal care, delivery, and a certain degree of postnatal care for the mother and the infant. During slavery, she was all that the slaves had. The African American midwife also aided in delivery of some of the whites as well in a time when blacks were considered to be no more than animals. This proves that the African American midwife was more than a savage …

Different Proctolin Neurons Elicit Distinct Motor Patterns From A Multifunctional Neuronal Network, Dawn M. Blitz, Andrew E. Christie, Melissa J. Coleman, Brian J. Norris, Eve Marder, Michael P. Nusbaum
WM Keck Science Faculty Papers
Distinct motor patterns are selected from a multifunctional neuronal network by activation of different modulatory projection neurons. Subsets of these projection neurons can contain the same neuromodulator(s), yet little is known about the relative influence of such neurons on network activity. We have addressed this issue in the stomatogastric nervous system of the crab Cancer borealis. Within this system, there is a neuronal network in the stomatogastric ganglion (STG) that produces many versions of the pyloric and gastric mill rhythms. These different rhythms result from activation of different projection neurons that innervate the STG from neighboring ganglia and modulate STG …
