Two-Metal-Ion Catalysis In Adenylyl Cyclase, John J.G. Tesmer, Roger K. Sunahara, Roger A. Johnson, Gilles Gosselin, Alfred G. Gilman, Stephen R. Sprang

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Adenylyl cyclase (AC) converts adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to cyclic adenosine monophosphate, a ubiquitous second messenger that regulates many cellular functions. Recent structural studies have revealed much about the structure and function of mammalian AC but have not fully defined its active site or catalytic mechanism. Four crystal structures were determined of the catalytic domains of AC in complex with two different ATP analogs and various divalent metal ions. These structures provide a model for the enzyme- substrate complex and conclusively demonstrate that two metal ions bind in the active site. The similarity of the active site of AC to those …

Predicting Community Satisfaction Among Rural Residents: An Integrative Model, Rebecca Filkins, John C. Allen, Sam Cordes Jul 1999

Predicting Community Satisfaction Among Rural Residents: An Integrative Model, Rebecca Filkins, John C. Allen, Sam Cordes

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

Community satisfaction has often been linked to the level of satisfaction with a community’s infrastructure, job opportunities and social support networks. Yet, most empirical analyses of community satisfaction have focused on only one aspect of the available theory to predict community satisfaction. In this paper, we integrate multiple models to analyze community satisfaction of almost 4,000 rural Nebraskans. The integrated model indicates that social ties may have a greater role in predicting community satisfaction than had been previously thought.

A Pilot Study Of Exercise Training To Reduce Trunk Fat In Adults With Hiv-Associated Fat Redistribution, Ronenn Roubenoff, Lauren Weiss, Ann Mcdermott, Tanya Heflin, Gregory J. Cloutier, Michael Wood, Sherwood Gorbach

Kinesiology and Public Health

Body fat redistribution (‘lipodystrophy’), with gain in abdominal and trunk fat, and decline in facial and limb fat, is a newly recognized problem in patients with HIV infection that has been linked to use of HIV-1 protease inhibitors. Increased abdominal fat may predispose these patients to hypertension, diabetes, and coronary artery disease. At this time no effective treatment is available. We examined whether exercise training could reduce trunk fat in men with fat redistribution.

Deaf Children, Self-Esteem, And Parents' Communication Patterns, Lynn Marie Bloom Jul 1999

Deaf Children, Self-Esteem, And Parents' Communication Patterns, Lynn Marie Bloom

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this study was to analyze the responses from high school students who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing regarding self-esteem, and communication methods used in the family. The quantitative design examines how the parents' communication methods affect the Deaf child's level of self-esteem. Several studies have reported there is a relationship between the family's communication method and the deaf child's level of self-esteem. Parents whose sign language skills were more proficient had children whose self-esteem scores were higher than those of parents who were less skilled in sign language. Also, parents have an important role to play in preparing …
