Biology Faculty Articles

We have investigated the effects of plasma HIV RNA, CD4+ T lymphocytes and chemokine receptors CCR5 and CCR2b on HIV disease progression in hemophiliacs. We prospectively observed during follow-up 207 HIV-infected hemophiliacs in the Hemophilia Growth and Development Study. Plasma HIV RNA was measured on cryopreserved plasma from enrollment using the Chiron Corporation bDNA (version 2.0) assay. Genotype variants CCR2b-641 and CCR5-Δ32 were detected using standard molecular techniques. Those with the mutant allele for CCR2b, and to a lesser extent CCR5, had lower plasma HIV RNA, and higher CD4+ T lymphocytes than did those without these …

Association Of Low Back Pain With Self-Reported Risk Factors Among Patients Seeking Physical Therapy Services, Pamela Levangie

All PTHMS Faculty Publications

Background and Purpose. This study investigated the magnitude of association between low back pain (LBP) and self-reported factors thought to increase the risk of LBP. Subjects and Methods. Questionnaires were completed by 150 patients who were receiving physical therapy for LBP and by 138 patients who were being treated for other reasons. The solicited information was used to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for the LBP-risk factor association. Results. Low back pain was positively associated with smoking status, pregnancy, industrial vibration exposure, and time spent in a car (odds ratios [is greater than or equal to] 2.21). Daily …

Inhibition Of The Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica By Aliphatic Alcohols. Characterization Of The Hydrophobic Substrate Recognition Site, Leila Ustynyuk, Brian Bennett, Tanya Edwards, Richard C. Holz Aug 1999

Holz

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

Seven aliphatic and two aromatic alcohols were tested as reporters of the substrate selectivity of the aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP). This series of alcohols was chosen to systematically probe the effect of carbon chain length, steric bulk, and inhibitor shape on the inhibition of AAP. Initially, however, the question of whether AAP is denatured in the presence of aliphatic alcohols was addressed. On the basis of circular dichroism (CD), electronic absorption, and fluorescence spectra, the secondary structure of AAP, with and without added aliphatic alcohols, was unchanged. These data clearly indicate that AAP is not denatured in aliphatic alcohols, …

Federal Highway Spending And Economic Growth In Appalachia, James Herbert Noonan Aug 1999

Federal Highway Spending And Economic Growth In Appalachia, James Herbert Noonan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Appalachia has always struggled economically due to three main factors: absentee ownership, isolation, and stereotyping. In 1965, Congress created the Appalachian Regional Commission with the mission of providing economic development programs to increase development in the region. Federal highway spending was seen as a key to improving the Appalachian infrastructure.;Today, the debate continues on the effectiveness of federal highway spending in Appalachia. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of federal highway spending on socioeconomic status in Appalachia by analyzing the effects of spending during an economic recovery from 1983--89 and recession 1989--92. Three constructs determine increases …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Male broilers were fed ad libitum a control diet and diets with 1.5% and 2.7% calcium propionate (CaP). Broiler diets were supplemented with CaP for the first 2,4,6, or 8-week intervals. After being fed CaP for the previous mentioned times the broilers received a control diet for the remainder of each period. All broilers supplemented with CaP had lower body weights (p > .01). Fat pad weight was lower in CaP treated broilers slaughtered at 8 weeks of age (p > .01). Percent carcass fat was lower in CaP treated birds (p > .01). Percent carcass fat was lower in CaP treated birds …

Single Parents And Organizational Commitment, Absenteeism, And Internal Motivation: An Initial Investigation, Melissa D. Broughton Aug 1999

Single Parents And Organizational Commitment, Absenteeism, And Internal Motivation: An Initial Investigation, Melissa D. Broughton

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study examined the relationship between group membership (by maritalstatus and sex) and the salience of the family role identities of caregiver and provider. It was expected that both the provider and caregiver roles would be salient for single parents. Results indicated that mothers identified with the caregiver role to a greater extent than fathers. However, no support was found for the idea that custodial single fathers identify with the caregiver role to the same extent as mothers. Results marginally supported the idea that custodial single mothers identify with the provider role as highly as fathers do, whereas married mothers …

Job Satisfaction Of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists In Tennessee, Kelly M. Nelson Aug 1999

Job Satisfaction Of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists In Tennessee, Kelly M. Nelson

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Job satisfaction had been linked with improved job performance, increased productivity, decreased absenteeism, decreased job turnover rates and increased quality of care. For these reasons, employers have sought to determine what constitutes job satisfaction and what factors affect it. A wealth of information is available regarding job satisfaction in general and job satisfaction of nurses, yet little research has been done related to the job satisfaction of CRNAs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate overall job satisfaction of CRNAs; to evaluate CRNAs' level of intrinsic and extrinsic satisfaction as components of overall satisfaction; and to explore the effects …

Interparental Conflict And Child And Adolescent Aggression: An Examination Of Overt And Relational Aggression, Stacey T. Mizokawa Aug 1999

Interparental Conflict And Child And Adolescent Aggression: An Examination Of Overt And Relational Aggression, Stacey T. Mizokawa

Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The relationship between interparentaI conflict and overt aggression has been a consistent finding for males, but not for females. As a result. females have been thought to be less affected by parental disputes. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether parental conflict could predict aggression in males and females if aggression is operationalized to include both the overt type that is common among males and the relational type that is more common in females. Participants were 102 fifth- (37 males; 65 females). 137 eighth- (54 males; 83 females). and 110 eleventh-graders (37 males; 73 females) and their parents. …

Genetic And Structural Analyses Of Cytoplasmic Filaments Of Wild-Type Treponema Phagedenis And A Flagellar Filament-Deficient Mutant, Jacques Izard, William A. Samsonoff, Mary Beth Kinoshita, Ronald J. Limberger Aug 1999

Genetic And Structural Analyses Of Cytoplasmic Filaments Of Wild-Type Treponema Phagedenis And A Flagellar Filament-Deficient Mutant, Jacques Izard, William A. Samsonoff, Mary Beth Kinoshita, Ronald J. Limberger

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Unique cytoplasmic filaments are found in the treponeme genus of spirochete bacteria. Their function is unknown, but their location underneath the periplasmic flagellar filaments (PFF) suggests a role in motility and/or cell structure. To better understand these unique structures, the gene coding for the cytoplasmic filaments, cfpA, was identified in various treponemal species. Treponema phagedenis cfpA was 2,037 nucleotides long, and the encoded polypeptide showed 78 to 100% amino acid sequence identity with the partial sequence of CfpA from T. denticola, T. vincentii, and T. pallidum subsp. pertenue. Wild-type T. phagedenis and a …

Global Cns Gene Transfer For A Childhood Neurogenetic Enzyme Deficiency: Canavan Disease., Paola Leone, Christopher G Janson, Scott J Mcphee, Matthew J During

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers

The neurogenetic prototypic disease on which we chose to test our gene therapy strategy is Canavan disease (CD). CD is an autosomal recessive leukodystrophy associated with spongiform degeneration of the brain. At present the disease is uniformly fatal in affected probands. CD is characterized by mutations in the aspartoacylase (ASPA) gene, resulting in loss of enzyme activity. In this review, recent evidence is summarized on the etiology and possible treatments for CD. In particular, we discuss two gene delivery systems representing recent advances in both viral and liposome technology: a novel cationic liposome-polymer-DNA (LPD) complex, DCChol/DOPE-protamine, as well as recombinant …

A Plan For Fairfax: Improving Downtown Through Traffic Calming, Mixed-Use Development, And A Village Green, Susan E. Swift

Master's Projects

Urban sprawl has become a national Issue as communities begin to realize the costs of expanding development into the countryside; traffic congestion loss of community identity, and loss of open space are but a few of those costs. Al Gore (1999), Vice President of the United States, is seizing the moment to articulate his so-called Livability Agenda for the Century. Included in his proposal are funds to “build more livable communities” and suggestions for “new steps to ease traffic congestion.. .and new steps to promote cooperation and sound planning among neighboring communities” (Gore 1999).

The program aims to help people …
