Morphology Of Wetland Streams, Michael C. Jurmu Aug 1999

Morphology Of Wetland Streams, Michael C. Jurmu

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent understanding and concern with wetland environments has resulted in an increase in restoration and creation projects aimed at replicating these ecosystems. The unique characteristics within wetland environments result in different controls on streams traversing these areas, yet little research has been conducted to determine whether the morphology of these streams differs from streams in non-wetland, alluvial environments. Wetland streams from three different physiographic regions of the U.S. are compared to four morphological models and 12 additional features cited as typical in non-wetland streams. Analysis of this comparison will aid in determining whether wetland streams have differing morphology and which …

The Effects Of Supplemental Protein On Urea Nitrogen Excretion In Women 40-70 Years Old, Tammy D. Moran

Masters Theses

The problem of this study was to determine the effect of supplemental liquid protein in women 40-70 years of age over a 4-week period. Weeks 1 and 3 served as the control period. During this time, no particular diet regime was required, but protein drinks were prohibited. The treatment condition occurred during Weeks 2 and 4. During this time, subjects consumed two protein drinks each day for a period of 7 days. Twenty-four hour urine collections occurred at the end of each week. Urine was analyzed for the presence of urea nitrogen. The dependent variables were urinary urea nitrogen, self-perceived …

The Hidden Work Of The Farm Homemaker, Deborah B. Reed, Susan C. Westneat, Steven R. Browning, Lana Skarke

Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Despite women’s involvement in agricultural production, the work role of women residing in farm households has not been thoroughly examined. Data collected in 1994-1995 as part of the NIOSH-sponsored Farm Family Health and Hazard Surveillance Project were used to address task issues and health status of farm women in Kentucky. In 1996, the farm woman component of the Kentucky study was replicated in five counties in west Texas, allowing an examination of farm women in two large agricultural states. The Kentucky study employed a two-stage cluster design;the Texas study was based on a systematic quota sample of farms. Both studies …

Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase Activating Peptide Phase Shifts Circadian Rhythms In A Manner Similar To Light, Mary E. Harrington, Sabina Hoque, Adam Hall, Diego Golombek, Stephany Biello Aug 1999

Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase Activating Peptide Phase Shifts Circadian Rhythms In A Manner Similar To Light, Mary E. Harrington, Sabina Hoque, Adam Hall, Diego Golombek, Stephany Biello

Psychology: Faculty Publications

The endogenous circadian pacemaker in mammals is located in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of the hypothalamus. Various cues can reset circadian rhythm phase, thereby entraining the internal rhythm to the environmental cycle, and these effects can be investigated using an in vitro method to measure phase shifts of the SCN. Although pituitary adenylate cyclase activating peptide (PACAP) is localized in retinal inputs to the SCN, it has been reported to alter clock phase only during the subjective day (Hannibal et al., 1997), whereas light alters phase only in the subjective night. In this study we show that PACAP can reset …

Conversion Of New Circle Road To A Limited Access Highway, Steven M. Henderson, Nikiforos Stamatiadis Aug 1999

Conversion Of New Circle Road To A Limited Access Highway, Steven M. Henderson, Nikiforos Stamatiadis

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objectives of this study were to first evaluate the existing traffic conditions along the NE part of New Circle Road and investigate the use of unconventional left turn treatments, as well as other access restrictions to improve the operating conditions of New Circle Road. The alternatives examined include a do-nothing alternative, the addition of one through lane per direction, the use of median U-turns at various locations, and combinations of them. Restrictive left turn strategies proved to be a more successful tool for traffic management on New Circle Road than simply adding a lane in each direction. Using median …

Guide To Ph025 Gertrude Fitzgerald Photograph Collection, Samuel Sisneros

Finding Aids

Gertrude Fitzgerald was born April 1, 1876 in Fulton, Illinois to Ebenezer Baird and Sue Mussina. In 1896 she married Benjamin Fitzgerald, an engineer. His job led the family to various locations in Latin America, especially in Mexico. The Fitzgerald family lived most of the time in the small mountain community of Madera, Chihuahua, an important part of the Pearson Company’s industrial empire. Gertrude Fitzgerald became interested in photography while living in Madera, and some of her photographs were used by the Pearson Company to make postcards to show prospective employees that they would be living in comfortable modern conditions. …
