The e+p neutral-current deep inelastic scattering differential cross-sections dσ/dQ2, for Q2 > 400 GeV2, dσ/dx and dσ/dy, for Q2 > 400, 2500 and 10000 GeV2, have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data sample of 47.7 pb-1 was collected at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV. The cross-section, dσ/dQ2, falls by six orders of magnitude between Q2 = 400 and 40000 GeV2. The predictions of the Standard Model are in very good agreement with the data. Complementing the observations of time-like Z° contributions to fermion-antifermion annihilation, the data provide direct evidence for the presence of Z° exchange in the …

Effects Of 4-N-Nonylphenol On Life-History Traits And Population Dynamics Of A Polychaete, Flemming T. Hansen, Valery E. Forbes, Thomas L. Forbes

Valery Forbes Publications

A Life-Table-Response Experiment lasting 78 d was performed to investigate the toxic effects of sediment-associated 4-n-nonylphenol (NP) on growth, reproduction, and survivorship of isolated hermaphrodites of the infaunal polychaete Capitella sp. I. Demographic effects were evaluated using both a fully age-classified and a simple twostage model to estimate population growth rates (λ). Decomposition analysis was performed to explore the contributions of each of the affected life-history traits to the effects observed on l. Elasticity analysis was applied to examine the relative sensitivity of λ to changes in each of the different life-history traits under different exposure levels.

Studying Stress In Ecological Systems: Implications For Ecological Risk Assessment And Risk Management, Valery E. Forbes Jan 1999

Studying Stress In Ecological Systems: Implications For Ecological Risk Assessment And Risk Management, Valery E. Forbes

Valery Forbes Publications

In many of the world’s habitats abiotic stress is a key force controlling the distribution and abundance of species. As a result of human activities, the role of abiotic stress appears to be increasing in many areas in the form of habitat alteration or destruction, chemical contamination, and large-scale climatic shifts. An important scientific goal, therefore, is to develop approaches for assessing and predicting damage to ecological systems arising from abiotic stress. Moreover, determining how interactions between human-caused stresses and natural environmental stresses impact biological systems is an active area of research. This Invited Feature highlights some of the main …

Fertilizing The Weeds: The New Deal's Rural Poverty Program In West Virginia., Kevin John Cahill Jan 1999

Fertilizing The Weeds: The New Deal's Rural Poverty Program In West Virginia., Kevin John Cahill

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In 1933, the New Deal launched its rural poverty program to mitigate suffering and rectify some of the underlying causes of chronic rural poverty. The rural rehabilitation program, which was the New Deal's primary method of assisted low-income commercial farmers, provided low-interest loans and supervision. The rural resettlement and land retirement program resettled families living on submarginal land and converted submarginal farmland to public forestland, game refugees, or recreational parks. Despite the fact that the New Deal's rural poverty program was reorganized several times, and was administered by several different agencies including Federal Emergency Relief Administration, the Resettlement Administration, the …

Effect Of Maturity And Divalent Salts On Quality Of Low-Fat, Low-Sodium Restructured Beef., Sharon L. Pojedinec Jan 1999

Effect Of Maturity And Divalent Salts On Quality Of Low-Fat, Low-Sodium Restructured Beef., Sharon L. Pojedinec

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Manipulation of product formulation protocols and ingredients to optimize texture development and processing yields provides opportunity to produce high quality, low sodium, low-fat restructured beef. The objective of this experiment was to determine effect of preblending with MgCl2 and/or CaCl2 on functionality of A- and C-maturity, in low-sodium, low-fat restructured beef. Addition of CaCl2 decreased (p< 0.001) raw and cooked pH. For both maturities, raw products with CaCl2 had more soluble protein (p< 0.05) than products without CaCl2. C-maturity products contained more soluble myosin (p< 0.10) than A-maturity products. In C-maturity treatments, MgCl2 increased (p< 0.005) myosin solubility. Products with CaCl2 decreased (p< 0.01) actin solubility. In A-maturity products, MgCl2 had less (p< 0.05) soluble actin than treatments without MgCl2. In C-maturity products, MgCl2 contained more (p< 0.05) soluble actin than treatments without MgCl2. Addition of CaCl2 decreased (p< 0.005) cook yield and addition of MgCl2 increased (p< 0.005) cook yield. In C-maturity products, treatments without CaCl2 had a higher (p< 0.0005) peak force than treatments without CaCl2 in A maturity products. In A-maturity products, treatments without MgCl2 had lower (p< 0.005) peak force than the same treatment in C-maturity products and lower (p< 0.05) than MgCl2 containing treatments. C-maturity products were more cohesive (p< 0.08) than A-maturity. Addition of CaCl2 increased (p< 0.05) cohesiveness and added MgCl2 decreased (p< 0.05) cohesiveness. Addition of MgCl2 and CaCl2 and beef maturity affect protein-water interactions and texture development of low-sodium, low-fat restructured beef.

Two is to investigate the relationships between receptivity, as the dependent variable and ten independent variables: non-monetary cost benefits, alleviation of fears and concerns, significant other support, feelings compared to the previous system, shared goals (shared teaching goals and cohesiveness), collaboration (team teaching, involvement in decision making and teacher collaboration) and …

Emotion Altering Effects Of Research Participation, Matthew Dunsire Jan 1999

Emotion Altering Effects Of Research Participation, Matthew Dunsire

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Previous studies have suggested that participating in psychological research may temporarily amplify participants’ experience of positive or negative emotions (Daugherty & Lawrence. 1996). In the present research, 114 male and female university students completed either self-focused or non-self-focused questionnaires to investigate characteristics that may predispose some participants to positive or negative reactions following participation in research. Four hypotheses were examined: (a) A self-focused task compared to a non-self-focused task would significantly increase average levels of emotional arousal; (b) the amplification of emotional reactions would be greater in females than males (c) participants experiencing negative life events and who are less …

Moving To Western Australia : Decision Making Processes Of Migrants From The United Kingdom, Lynne Cohen Jan 1999

Moving To Western Australia : Decision Making Processes Of Migrants From The United Kingdom, Lynne Cohen

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

International migration has assumed a new importance during the last few decades due to the volume and increase of population movement. Two important questions are relevant to the migration process. The person has to make the decision to move and to select a place of destination. In this thesis a series of studies designed to examine the factors that led to the consideration of leaving and the attributes which contributed to the choice of destination are presented. This research begins by adopting suggestions proposed by Jahoda (1981) to ask questions and thereby increase the knowledge base. The methodological framework of …

War Decisions In The Late 1990s By Partial Congressional Declaration, Charles Tiefer Jan 1999

War Decisions In The Late 1990s By Partial Congressional Declaration, Charles Tiefer

San Diego Law Review

The great surprise in actual war powers decision making of the late 1990s has been the emergence of a practically decisive, yet

constitutionally unexplored paradigm: "partial" congressional declara- tion of war.' Presently, the Senate and the House seem to have the

function of deciding on warlike action through unmatched, "partial" declarations; just how constitutional can this be?

The First Women Members Of The Supreme Court Bar, 1879-1900, Mary L. Clark Jan 1999

The First Women Members Of The Supreme Court Bar, 1879-1900, Mary L. Clark

San Diego Law Review

In 1879, Belva A. Lockwood of Washington, D.C., became the first woman member of the bar of the U. S. Supreme Court. Lockwood had applied for admission to the bar three years earlier, but had been refused on the ground that no woman had ever been admitted and thus there was no precedent for women's admission. Not easily defeated, Lockwood lobbied Congress to amend the rules governing admission of attorneys to the Supreme Court bar to allow for women as well as men. In February, 1879, Congress adopted "an Act to relieve certain legal disabilities of women," which authorized women …

Race, Space, And Place: The Geography Of Economic Development, Audrey G. Mcfarlane Jan 1999

Race, Space, And Place: The Geography Of Economic Development, Audrey G. Mcfarlane

San Diego Law Review

In 1993, Congress authorized a community and economic development program called The Empowerment Zone and Enterprise Cities Demonstration Program ("Empowerment Zones Program") to create geographic zones within certain selected cities that would be eligible for special federal attention to alleviate pervasive conditions of

poverty and economic distress within the cities. The program is self- described as a strategy "to create jobs and business opportunities in [the]

most economically-distressed areas of inner cities' by providing tax incentives and social service funds within the zone to stimulate business creation and expansion and attain, over the long-term, revitalization of

the distressed community. The …

Slaves To Fashion: A Thirteenth Amendment Litigation Strategy To Abolish Sweatshops In The Garment Industry, Samantha C. Halem

San Diego Law Review

Viewed as a relic of a bygone era, modem legal teaching largely ignores the Thirteenth Amendment. Few constitutional law textbooks give it any more than a passing glance.' After all, slavery was abolished in the United States in 1863. While it is true that some scholars have suggested new applications for the Civil War Amendment legal practitioners have found few practical applications. This Article proposes a real world application of the Thirteenth Amendment to a current real world problem. Legal practitioners have under-utilized the Thirteenth Amendment. They should employ the Thirteenth Amendment as a valuable tool for fighting slavery and …

The Tort That Refuses To Go Away: The Subtle Reemergence Of Public Disclosure Of Private Facts

San Diego Law Review

This Comment focuses instead on the subtle reemergence of the private facts tort in factual scenarios Warren and Brandeis most likely could not foresee one hundred years ago. Part II of the Comment briefly describes the development of the private facts tort. Part III examines the inevitable conflict between the private facts tort and the First Amendment, and common law attempts to reconcile that conflict through variations of the "newsworthiness" defense. Part IV focuses on the resurrection of the private facts tort in recent case law, due to judicial limitation of the newsworthiness defense. Finally, after examining the problems associated …
