Measuring Gender Equity, Alfred Dennis Mathewson, Robert D. Rogers Jan 1999

Measuring Gender Equity, Alfred Dennis Mathewson, Robert D. Rogers

Faculty Scholarship

It is our intent to provide some insight into the development of compliance plans with an eye toward a university's athletic program policy. In Part I, we explore conventional attempts to measure relative demand and its use in litigated cases. In Part II, we describe the measurement instrument we used to conduct the empirical study. Our study is distinguished from conventional efforts in two respects.2 7 First, we did not seek to measure the number of athletes with interest and ability. Rather we sought to measure the relative amounts of athletic participation that would be consumed if a university satisfied …

Violence Against Women In South Africa: The Role Of Culture And The Limitations Of The Law, Penelope Andrews Jan 1999

Violence Against Women In South Africa: The Role Of Culture And The Limitations Of The Law, Penelope Andrews

Articles & Chapters

This paper describes the role of culture in perpetuating violence against women. It does this by contextualizing violence against women in South Africa within the grand project of transformation taking place there, and highlighting the possibilities of fundamental restructuring, with respect to rights and equality for women, when the feminist project intersects with the non-racial project. The paper, therefore, visits a familiar question, namely, the obstacles to transformation when the eradication of racism takes precedence over the elimination of sexism, as it historically has in South Africa. In addition, this paper describes recent attempts by the legislature and courts in …

Trusts And Estates Practice Into The Next Millennium, Marc S. Bekerman, Gerry W. Beyer Jan 1999

Trusts And Estates Practice Into The Next Millennium, Marc S. Bekerman, Gerry W. Beyer

Articles & Chapters

As the world prepares to enter the next millennium, the practice of trusts and estates law continues to evolve. Factors driving this evolution include an increase in life expectancy, numerous advances in medical technology, the increased geographic mobility of individuals, the growing use of revocable trusts as will substitutes, the trend to abolish the rule against perpetuities and restrictions on the ability of creditors to reach self-settled trusts. Due to advances ranging from low-tech improvements, such as refrigeration and sewer systems, to sophisticated medical procedures, such as organ transplantation and dialysis, people are living longer than their ancestors. This article …

A variety of texts, with a particular focus on Australian publications, provide the basis for further application analysis. This is primarily a textual research therefore data gathering procedures were library based. Being a theoretical analysis of the current status of social capital, as it relates to prospective social policy reform in Australia, this thesis both collates and contributes to a body of knowledge regarding the …

General Practitioners And Depression In Older Adult Males : Ageism, Physical Problems And Treatment, Gary M. Duggan Jan 1999

General Practitioners And Depression In Older Adult Males : Ageism, Physical Problems And Treatment, Gary M. Duggan

Theses : Honours

Depression in older adults can have fatal consequences if undetected and not treated. Comparisons of studies are difficult because of the lack of methodical consistency. The literature is reviewed with regard to the definition, prevalence, consequences, recognition, treatment and prognosis of depression in relation to general practitioners (GPs) and with particularly regard to elderly males. The research indicates poor recognition and treatment of depression in older adults, despite the research indicating that older adults have a similar prognosis as younger adults, when the depression is treated. Factors influencing the detection of depression are included.

Age Discrimination In Hiring Practices Against Older Adults In Western Australia : The Case Of Accounting Assistants, Eyal Gringart Jan 1999

Age Discrimination In Hiring Practices Against Older Adults In Western Australia : The Case Of Accounting Assistants, Eyal Gringart

Theses : Honours

The percentage of older adults in the Australian population is predicted to increase from about 18 at the end of this century to about 33 per cent by the year 2050. One anticipated consequence of this significant ageing of the population is that increasing numbers of older adults may be required in the workforce. Still, age discrimination in hiring places older adults at a disadvantage. Local measures of actual discrimination are needed in order to formulate appropriate policies and interventions to combat such negative attitudes. Evidence suggest that, contrary to employers perceptions, older adults are willing and able to work …

A survey using the interview method obtained and analysed the opinions and perceptions of security skills and knowledge from the sample population. The aim of this study was to contribute to the security field by exploring and analysing the skills and knowledge required …

Students and instructors perceptions were sought as to whether they believed that cross-cultural interaction would impede learning. The sample included forty-eight students and nine instructors from two flying schools. Thirty-eight students were required to complete a 15 item survey and ten students and nine instructors participated in a semi-structured interview. The research identified four specific areas - language, studying and teaching methods, attitudes towards asking questions, and command decision making. Cross-cultural interaction was found to be an integral …

A Study Of Teacher Behaviours As Interpreted By Low Achieving Passive Students, Carolyn Crook Jan 1999

A Study Of Teacher Behaviours As Interpreted By Low Achieving Passive Students, Carolyn Crook

Theses : Honours

This study explores the nature of low achieving, passive students' interpretations of teacher behaviour towards them, how these interpretations cluster into specific categories and the possibility of a mis-match existing between a teacher's intended behaviour and the student's interpretations of that behaviour. The sample consisted of four year five students, one female and three male students, who were selected from two Perth metropolitan schools. Ethnographic-case study methods were used to conduct the investigation which included fieldnotes, observations, video-taped observations, student interviews and informal teacher interviews. The study revealed that low achieving, passive students have varying interpretations of teacher behaviour. As …
